As a hker, I had to say British rule is definitely better than PRC's rule. Despite the British aid in the development of HK, I am still bitter with UK for screwing us over, returning us to PRC instead of ROC.

HKers generally want independent first, return to Republic of China or stay with the UK. Going back to PRC was never on preferences the list until UK done their secret deal with the Commies from Beijing.

Yep, the big problem is that PRC is a big bully. And not unlike Kim Jong Il, they have missles/nukes pointed at you if they don't get what they want. I understand because of the PRC's threat, most authentic Hkers gave up the option of returning ROC even though most are sympathetic to Sun Yat Sen's cause. To me, I think it is better to die with pride but I know this is not what most Hkers want. To me, Independence and return UK are alright option, just don't want Hk to be under PRC.

Brit independence handover track record aint too awesome either, although it worked out of fine for Malaysia cuz the Brits were scared it may end up as another Myanmar and Singapore cuz of LKY and gang. PRC control ain't so bad now,i'm sure HKers will know how to react if PRC tighten their political grip. But joining ROC is suicide and counter productive for HK given PRC's standing in the word in terms of its military and economy.

I disagree with you saying PRC's control are not so bad now, it is getting worse every day. Each year, the police are getting more corrupted, the rich and poor gap widens, political freedom slowly get restricted, not to mention the parliament became a site for drama, and the list just goes on.

Personally, i disagreed Brits' control is single most ideal. HK benefits because of our location and the integrity of ppl drove by western intuition and our traditional confucian values. Brits colonized a lot of places, and only few places like Singapore and HK (with non europeon descended ppl as majority) succeed, there is a reason. ROC is a worthy cause, it was just unlucky to be found at a time when Japan and other powers + commies were ruining China.

@Balencian HK attracts lots of pple cuz of their economic benefit of being part of PRC. Many gwai lo nowadays like getting HK SAR citizenship to exploit the benefits of the Wooi Hong Zhing. Singapore and HK economic institutions are almost equal and if HK doesnt hav this advantage over Singapore, there is no point investing in HK, anyone will rather stay in Singapore. The 1984 treaty is designed to keep HK in China while keeping capitalism and British system of laws in our former colony until 2047.

This is so that after 2047 HK will be part of Shenzhan region with the name HK renamed. That may be their plan for after 2047. By the time schoolchildren having learnt about their motherland, China and sung Chinese national anthem while raising Chinese flag at schools will became Chinese patriots on leaving school, more than pro-independence or pro British..

Some of you recently wanted us British to come back or becoming independant within the Commonwealth.

Unfortunately, the 1984 treaty probably created by Chinese government at the time with agreements from the Thatcher government doesn't permit re-colonsation by British and any form of independence or join any organisations like the Commonwealth must have permission from Chinese government to do so which is highly unlikely cos China wanted to keep HK forever.

Our Government under Mrs Thatcher was forced by Deng to hand over HK or else. She and her government agreed. That's why HK people don't trust our government very much.

Hk is Chinese sovereignty but in the eyes of many Hongkonger, People Republic of China is not the legitimate Chinese government. Before the handover, British forces under the order of the Governor General forcibly torn down numerous villages in new territories that were raising ROC flags. This is what make many Hkers bitter about the Brits, although I have to admit the Brits did a very good job most of the time despite being a foreign overlord.

I don't expect others to follow my sentiment but as soon as I started my education in the US, I attempted to reach for my roots. Well they love their country and their Queen. They were British and liked being British. I myself am a Brit of Hong Kong decent and neither my parents nor I ever thought about ourselves as China people. We're British but of Chinese ethnicity. Its like being from Northern Ireland. That's a very simplistic view Obviously today people would have trouble justifying colonising countries and their people. But one can't judge history by our modern morals. Hong Kong had only a handful of people living on it in 1843. When Britain left it had over 6 million Those people didn't just magically appear, they came mostly from China for a better life. We can't 've been that nasty.
