As a hker, I had to say British rule is definitely better than PRC's rule. Despite the British aid in the development of HK, I am still bitter with UK for screwing us over, returning us to PRC instead of ROC.
HKers generally want independent first, return to Republic of China or stay with the UK. Going back to PRC was never on preferences the list until UK done their secret deal with the Commies from Beijing.
@Balencian ...ALSO A HKer... being under PRC is definitely better than being with ROC. Its gonna be fucked up with all the trade restrictions of bring considered part of an unrecognized state and u share a border with China in Shenzhen. Wats next, hundreds of cruise missiles pointing at HK from shenzhen??? Many HKers benefit by the fact that they reap the benefits of the biz freedom they hav in PRC. For independence wise, yes its the best option.
Yep, the big problem is that PRC is a big bully. And not unlike Kim Jong Il, they have missles/nukes pointed at you if they don't get what they want. I understand because of the PRC's threat, most authentic Hkers gave up the option of returning ROC even though most are sympathetic to Sun Yat Sen's cause. To me, I think it is better to die with pride but I know this is not what most Hkers want. To me, Independence and return UK are alright option, just don't want Hk to be under PRC.
@Balencian Not sure if HK is ready for independence cuz they hav been under the Brits for way too long. Brit independence handover track record aint too awesome either, although it worked out of fine for Malaysia cuz the Brits were scared it may end up as another Myanmar and Singapore cuz of LKY and gang. I agree being stuck with the Brits for life is the best option. God Save The Queen... XD...
Well, Singapore done it. =) Of course, we can, but we will have to deal with cruise missiles from PRC and their pregnant women flooding in. But again, there are plenty of allies we can draw from the region: Japan, Taiwan...etc
@Balencian HK's case shows under Brits control is the single most ideal option. Independence may be difficult. PRC control ain't so bad now,i'm sure HKers will know how to react if PRC tighten their political grip. But joining ROC is suicide and counter productive for HK given PRC's standing in the word in terms of its military and economy.
As I said before, I know the consequences for both ROC and HK if HK ever joined ROC at a time when PRC still have military/economic recognition.
I disagree with you saying PRC's control are not so bad now, it is getting worse every day. Each year, the police are getting more corrupted, the rich and poor gap widens, political freedom slowly get restricted, not to mention the parliament became a site for drama, and the list just goes on.
Personally, i disagreed Brits' control is single most ideal. HK benefits because of our location and the integrity of ppl drove by western intuition and our traditional confucian values. Brits colonized a lot of places, and only few places like Singapore and HK (with non europeon descended ppl as majority) succeed, there is a reason. ROC is a worthy cause, it was just unlucky to be found at a time when Japan and other powers + commies were ruining China.
@Balencian HK attracts lots of pple cuz of their economic benefit of being part of PRC. Many gwai lo nowadays like getting HK SAR citizenship to exploit the benefits of the Wooi Hong Zhing. Singapore and HK economic institutions are almost equal and if HK doesnt hav this advantage over Singapore, there is no point investing in HK, anyone will rather stay in Singapore. Maybe ur point of view is more political. Im not sayin ROC is screwed up, its juz impractical.
The 1984 treaty is designed to keep HK in China while keeping capitalism and British system of laws in our former colony until 2047.
This is so that after 2047 HK will be part of Shenzhan region with the name HK renamed. That may be their plan for after 2047. By the time schoolchildren having learnt about their motherland, China and sung Chinese national anthem while raising Chinese flag at schools will became Chinese patriots on leaving school, more than pro-independence or pro British..
Some of you recently wanted us British to come back or becoming independant within the Commonwealth.
Unfortunately, the 1984 treaty probably created by Chinese government at the time with agreements from the Thatcher government doesn't permit re-colonsation by British and any form of independence or join any organisations like the Commonwealth must have permission from Chinese government to do so which is highly unlikely cos China wanted to keep HK forever.
GOD SAVE THE FOSSIL CUNT !!! god really need to save her because if she isn't alive then all british people will die because of hunger because she is breast feeding the britain and she is not using the tax money at all. every day she wakes up and goes early morning to her shop to sell sandwiches and she pays 60% of her earnings for tax to give a good life to british people. she even has built a ship and many aircraft for her majesty from the sandwich shop. Elly! can I have some chips pleeease
@unclemau Too true but HK is Chinese sovereignty under international law even through British administrative rule until 1997. China wanted HK back as sovereignty owners.
Our Government under Mrs Thatcher was forced by Deng to hand over HK or else. She and her government agreed. That's why HK people don't trust our government very much.
Hk is Chinese sovereignty but in the eyes of many Hongkonger, People Republic of China is not the legitimate Chinese government. Before the handover, British forces under the order of the Governor General forcibly torn down numerous villages in new territories that were raising ROC flags. This is what make many Hkers bitter about the Brits, although I have to admit the Brits did a very good job most of the time despite being a foreign overlord.
@reallysecretusername It doesn't matter at all! British citizen have human rights and freedom and this is the most important thing for us. That is pointless to become upper class people when you dont have the basic HUMAN RIGHTS AND FREEDOM! As you will never have any idea the China government get you to prison just because you say the truth!!!!!!
well, with the second statement..not really, some of them migrated to Britain and other commonewalth nations, but yeah, I guess you're right with the majority
@diestem315 I was born in 91 in Hong Kong. To this day, I still hold by my allegiance to her Majesty. I don't expect others to follow my sentiment but as soon as I started my education in the US, I attempted to reach for my roots. The roots I found were my Chinese culture and my British Colonial heritage. I sang on the day when the Union Jack fell at the Exhibition Centre, a sad day. Now, a HK Colonial Flag is hung in my dormitory. God Preserve Queen Elizabeth II!
but then again, we (I say we becos I am half English half Chinese) terrorised Eastern Europe and Asia during the time when Yuan Dynasty roamed this world.
and we also had the biggest kingdom in the world during Han and Tang Dynasties (still not as big as it is now). This world superpower thing works in a cycle. Who knows, the world next superpower after USA could well be Republic of Congo.
Hong Kong Island is belonged to the Great British Empire! As a Hong Konger, we can see that the Communist Party of China has ruined Hong Kong! I am so disapointed that Hong Kong hasn't joined the Commonwealth of Nations!
Long Live the Great British Empire and her Majesty Queen Elizebeth the Second! God Save the Queen and British Hong Kong!
i am from Singapore. If will be a blessing if Great British New Commonwealth will establish again but without any racism, hate but love and understanding. We will support each other weakness and gain from each other strong point and prosperous together as a Great British Commonwealth.God Save The Queen.
Hmmm, there seems to be a lot of even PURELY Hong Kong CHINESE people who want to return to British rule, I wonder what will happen if there was some sort of vote over that, but of course that's unlikely to happen with the evil I-want-it-all PRC government...
Well they love their country and their Queen. They were British and liked being British. I myself am a Brit of Hong Kong decent and neither my parents nor I ever thought about ourselves as China people. We're British but of Chinese ethnicity. Its like being from Northern Ireland. Theyre British but ethnically Irish. Great Britain itself is made up of 3 nations England, Scotland, and Wales. Thats what great about being British. We're all unified together no matter our ethnicity sharing 1 queen.
And if there was a vote it's undoubted that the vast majority, if not all, would vote for a return to British sovereignty. Who would want to be a colony of Communist China? And Hong Kong people do not consider themselves China people. They have for over a century considered themselves Hong Kongers people of the British crown colony. But the PCR would never let Hong Kongers choose. It has Hong Kong and its not going to let go.
Long live the rightful queen of Hong Kong HM Queen Elizabeth II!
Should be happy you guys are independent, unlike HK, we are not under foreign oppression and in the process of assimilation. In my life time,I think I can see the identity of Hong Konger would be forgotten and forever lost.
hey Hk people, think about this, did the british really care about the people of Hong Kong before 97? or did they care about the finical market, the stocks....?????
Why didn't they offer us citizenship to UK before the handover?
It's a shame that British HongKong need to be handovered to the communist China. We should have joined the commonwealth or continue as a Crown colony as Gibraltar.
Man, seems like the standards of police when it comes to ceremony and protocol has deteriorated a lot since 1997. I guess it's because there aren't any British colleagues around anymore to uphold those same traditions used in today's HK police force. :P

God lives in US but not the fucking UK .I am really shamed as a hknese same as u stupid guys...nobody like the communist but we are proud of our country
Did you study the history of the UK and China? If you did, you should know that China was attacked by many foreign countries including UK and Japan. A long history of being invaded led to Cultural Revolution and a poor China. Prefer British rule? you wanna be a second class slave of the British people?
I don't study the history of the UK and China, but i do study history of Hong Kong! I suggest u to find what the 28 Governors(especially Sir MacLehose) did for HK in public libraries or in wikipedia.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
We hk people did not ask the British to colonise us. We will run our place on our own hand better than the British who only invade others and get benefits from it.
That's a very simplistic view Obviously today people would have trouble justifying colonising countries and their people. But one can't judge history by our modern morals. Hong Kong had only a handful of people living on it in 1843. When Britain left it had over 6 million Those people didn't just magically appear, they came mostly from China for a better life. We can't 've been that nasty.
I regret that Britain didn't introduce more democracy sooner and that we didn't give all a proper passport
@Gomeying Although China was under the threat of colonization and imperialism in the 19 and the early 20th century, you are wrong in saying that these threats led to Cultural Revolution, which was totally plotted by Mao, rather than any foreigner.
Without the British administration, there would not have been Hong Kong. If you really experience what a life like after 1997, you may prefer to be ruled by the British
If you have studied history, or you have some basic knowledge, you should know that the current government of China is different from the former China government at that time. UK is one of the enemy of the Ching Government. As well, RoC & PRC are also the enemy of the Ching Government!! Then what difference between UK & the current China government!?? By the way, do you think "Ching" is your mother country?? Pls raise out, which government did not get the political power by ATTACK??
Agreed. China still doesn't know how to handle Hong Kong well after 10 years. And China should be grateful for a "prize" of a city that UK helped nurture into a powerhouse that we all know as "Hong Kong".
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol, now you are blaming everything on China, haven't you heard of "one country, two system"? and if it weren't because of China pooling money for hk during the 97 asian financial crisis, the economy in hk would be completely fucked.the world economy hasn't been good for the past 10 yrs ,hk is lucky to have China watch its back. besides, what did hk ever do for China? oh ,that's right, nothing
What about it? So what you're saying is the Mao era and the Tiananmen Massacre is bad (we all know that), but fustah's hateful comment against the mainlander PEOPLE is good? What's your logic? Chinese don't help Chinese? Seriously, I hope within 50 years that all of China is unite under one cultural entity called "China". No PRC and ROC political BS and free of foreign colonization.
HEY awong, you miss the point of what being part of the Brit experience is all about....democracy, 100 million people in China live like we do in HK and thw west, the rest live in squalor because of a junta that is out of date and should be deposed forthwith!
I think you really missed the point of why UK rule is not any better anyway: First, you failed to acknowledge that under Chinese rule, HK'ers can elect (although not a direct say) a chief executive; that's something HK never had under British rule. Under UK rule, HK'ers NEVER had any say on who they want for a governor.
Also, you failed to acknowledge that Hong Kong was never a democracy until the UK finally grant legislative powers to the Chinese people in the early 90s, but what I see was an attempt to buy support and justify British rule. But anyway, 7 years of democracy out of 155 years of UK rule? Wow... that's quite an experience. Lastly, you failed to acknowledge that HK is located right beside an economic powerhouse, and that is PRC.
Haha! Your freaking so-called "Iron Lady" made an agreement to give China back the stolen property. Now c'mon, just acknowledge that Imperial Britain more than 100 years ago are very famous for invading other countries and stealing lands, islands, and other people's properties. UK is a freaking thief in China and is about time we got HK back.
You stupid idiot, HK was on a lease, the lease ended and the British being truly honourable gave up the lease. Now before you go into a prtracted dialogue, understand the subject, now go and hump someone elses leg mutley!
Study your freaking history dumbass. NEW TERRITORIES was on a 99 year lease while Hong Kong WAS NOT. GAWD! Are you seriously THAT uneducated? Not to mention that you a 51 year old guy from Wales.
Hey, puerile and crass idiot. Are you trying to play a game of my dick is bigger than yours? Sorry you puerile nonce, not a game I will play, besides, biological fact you asin types only have small ones anyway!
OK, if you think mainland China is so greatand ruled by them is good, then get a PRC passport, abandon your Canadian nationality and become a PRC citizen for , say, ten years, and feel how great your motherland is under the Chinese rule. I hope, after that, you will know why so many chinese people want to immigrate to other country.
Ummm... hello? I'm not Sinocentric here. No country is perfect, I'm just proud of our country's continuing progress. China is getting freer and richer than it was more than 35 years ago. Look, my aunt is a HK'er too, not to mention she's Catholic and doesn't give a shit about politics. She went to Tianjin to study Chinese Medicine, and she never complain anything about living in the mainland.
Also I got close relatives living in Shenzhen, all in a family, owned a company and fucking 3x richer than I am, and they're not complaining. And since they're in mainland I can pick up my dual citizenship here easy. Also, there are many reasons why people emigrated from China, not just dissidents.
As a hker, I had to say British rule is definitely better than PRC's rule. Despite the British aid in the development of HK, I am still bitter with UK for screwing us over, returning us to PRC instead of ROC.

Such a great shame that they are not part of the British society and in fact, they never will be.

Did you study the history of the UK and China? If you did, you should know that China was attacked by many foreign countries including UK and Japan. A long history of being invaded led to Cultural Revolution and a poor China. Prefer British rule? you wanna be a second class slave of the British people?
Gomeying 4 years ago
I don't study the history of the UK and China, but i do study history of Hong Kong! I suggest u to find what the 28 Governors(especially Sir MacLehose) did for HK in public libraries or in wikipedia.

We hk people did not ask the British to colonise us. We will run our place on our own hand better than the British who only invade others and get benefits from it.
Gomeying 4 years ago
I don't think it is better when HK is ruled by the figurehead of the Chinese Communist Party! 香港福佳有你!
ngchunyin 4 years ago 3
That's a very simplistic view Obviously today people would have trouble justifying colonising countries and their people. But one can't judge history by our modern morals. Hong Kong had only a handful of people living on it in 1843. When Britain left it had over 6 million Those people didn't just magically appear, they came mostly from China for a better life. We can't 've been that nasty.
I regret that Britain didn't introduce more democracy sooner and that we didn't give all a proper passport
cjk91 4 years ago 3
@Gomeying Although China was under the threat of colonization and imperialism in the 19 and the early 20th century, you are wrong in saying that these threats led to Cultural Revolution, which was totally plotted by Mao, rather than any foreigner.
Without the British administration, there would not have been Hong Kong. If you really experience what a life like after 1997, you may prefer to be ruled by the British

@Gomeying
Pls raise out, which government did not get the political power by ATTACK??
kannycho 1 year ago
Agreed. China still doesn't know how to handle Hong Kong well after 10 years. And China should be grateful for a "prize" of a city that UK helped nurture into a powerhouse that we all know as "Hong Kong".

lol, now you are blaming everything on China, haven't you heard of "one country, two system"? and if it weren't because of China pooling money for hk during the 97 asian financial crisis, the economy in hk would be completely fucked.the world economy hasn't been good for the past 10 yrs ,hk is lucky to have China watch its back. besides, what did hk ever do for China? oh ,that's right, nothing

Chinese don't kill CHinese? Oh I'm sorry, but what was all the Cultural Revolution and Tiananmen Massacre all about???
socalazn168 4 years ago
What about it? So what you're saying is the Mao era and the Tiananmen Massacre is bad (we all know that), but fustah's hateful comment against the mainlander PEOPLE is good? What's your logic? Chinese don't help Chinese? Seriously, I hope within 50 years that all of China is unite under one cultural entity called "China". No PRC and ROC political BS and free of foreign colonization.
awong20XX 4 years ago
HEY awong, you miss the point of what being part of the Brit experience is all about....democracy, 100 million people in China live like we do in HK and thw west, the rest live in squalor because of a junta that is out of date and should be deposed forthwith!
WALSHY500 4 years ago
I think you really missed the point of why UK rule is not any better anyway: First, you failed to acknowledge that under Chinese rule, HK'ers can elect (although not a direct say) a chief executive; that's something HK never had under British rule. Under UK rule, HK'ers NEVER had any say on who they want for a governor.
awong20XX 4 years ago
Also, you failed to acknowledge that Hong Kong was never a democracy until the UK finally grant legislative powers to the Chinese people in the early 90s, but what I see was an attempt to buy support and justify British rule. But anyway, 7 years of democracy out of 155 years of UK rule? Wow... that's quite an experience. Lastly, you failed to acknowledge that HK is located right beside an economic powerhouse, and that is PRC.
awong20XX 4 years ago
"Hong Kong was never a democracy"
Now HKers still don't see any democracy!
Two chinese can only write english to each other.
ridiculous, shameful, nonsense!
If u can read chinese, I would prove them all!

Haha! Your freaking so-called "Iron Lady" made an agreement to give China back the stolen property. Now c'mon, just acknowledge that Imperial Britain more than 100 years ago are very famous for invading other countries and stealing lands, islands, and other people's properties. UK is a freaking thief in China and is about time we got HK back.
awong20XX 4 years ago
You stupid idiot, HK was on a lease, the lease ended and the British being truly honourable gave up the lease. Now before you go into a prtracted dialogue, understand the subject, now go and hump someone elses leg mutley!
WALSHY500 4 years ago
Study your freaking history dumbass. NEW TERRITORIES was on a 99 year lease while Hong Kong WAS NOT. GAWD! Are you seriously THAT uneducated? Not to mention that you a 51 year old guy from Wales.
awong20XX 4 years ago
Hey, puerile and crass idiot. Are you trying to play a game of my dick is bigger than yours? Sorry you puerile nonce, not a game I will play, besides, biological fact you asin types only have small ones anyway!

Then I guess you're a pedophile then. Too much Viagara?
awong20XX 4 years ago
OK, if you think mainland China is so greatand ruled by them is good, then get a PRC passport, abandon your Canadian nationality and become a PRC citizen for , say, ten years, and feel how great your motherland is under the Chinese rule. I hope, after that, you will know why so many chinese people want to immigrate to other country.
ngchunyin 4 years ago
Ummm... hello? I'm not Sinocentric here. No country is perfect, I'm just proud of our country's continuing progress. China is getting freer and richer than it was more than 35 years ago. Look, my aunt is a HK'er too, not to mention she's Catholic and doesn't give a shit about politics. She went to Tianjin to study Chinese Medicine, and she never complain anything about living in the mainland.
awong20XX 4 years ago
Also I got close relatives living in Shenzhen, all in a family, owned a company and fucking 3x richer than I am, and they're not complaining. And since they're in mainland I can pick up my dual citizenship here easy. Also, there are many reasons why people emigrated from China, not just dissidents.
