@annuekusa12 Pretty sure Campanella is male. I know about those, though, since when I fangirl I simply obsess. Right now I'm trying to get the book though. I'm not a big fan of movies but books are awesome.
I think the boy was dead to begin with. However, since she was young, she didn't understand and thought she could tell him how she feels about him physically. At the end, however, she realizes that "it was impossible to reach you with a space ship." So all this time she's been trying to talk to him, but obviously, it can never happen. TIS SAD D'8
@pokemania111 Gumi is Giovanni and Campanella is a girl whom disappear and leave Giovanni behind when he said they would be together forever, Giovanni wakes up on top of the hill and then he heard Zanelli (Another character) fell into the river from a boat and Campanella saved him but Campanella is missing, then Giovanni heads to the river and she was dead.then he makes a promise to stay strong throughout life, claiming that, no matter where she is, he and Campanella will always be together.
By this time, her love and sadness is almost unbearable, and the ship is filled with emotion. When she spots the boy she loves, I think this is the part where she hallucinates before she dies herself, so in a way, she did find her childhood lover. But that's just my idea of the story.
Now, with all the interesting pop up screen thingies that say, 'Why?' might be talking about Gumi asking why the boy is never around. As Gumi grows older, she comes up with ways to find the boy, by sending floating devices to reach the Milky Way, so that she may convince the boy to 'come back' with her love. Finally, she goes into a space ship to greet him herself.
See, I'm not very sure... I believe this video explains the story of two young children (Gumi standing with a boy in the meadow at the beginning) that are in love. The part that says, 'I want to meet the fish in the Milky Way,' might be something the boy used to say very often... (That might be why Gumi tried to go into space, hoping to find him.) I also believe that the boy died.
@maroonmushroom39 Yes, I believe the boy did die because at 2:57, they show a kid crying (which i believe is the boy) maybe due to someone like a family member dying. Then at 3:00, they show feet which looks like he may be standing on top of a bridge to jump off, most likely committing suicide, which is why at 3:03, they show people carrying a casket with gumi standing in the background (obviously the boy's funeral).
