If your fighting atop a hill maybee u could use cannons. even 3-4 cannon regiments can make him want to charge you so he doesnt get a lot of casualties from cannon fire and your cannons can shoot further and more accurately. Im not sure if this would work because i only used this strategy on mideval 2 so if im wrong or partialy wrong then correct me.

Firing atop a hill does give you longer range with shrapnel shot but the accuracy is the same.

not sure if it works but you could fake a rout by sending a order for your units to retreat, by first taking a volly or two.
