Lincoln joined the military, but he was 37 by the time of the Mexican War and already in Congress, and he opposed that war. Franklin Roosevelt was of age when the Spanish-American War broke out, but just because cousin Theodore supposed it doesn't mean he did. He even said he hated war. Wilson was not the right age, either. That's the difference. None of these man actively avoided war.

Now as for Rome, the Roman empire fell apart due to internal problems. People often say that empires always fail, but this is because civilizations eventually fail. The Romans, were able to maintain their rule for several centuries without serious downturns or instabilities. So imperialism is not inherently unstable in itself.

Now in America's case we are really asserting hegemonic stability not actual imperialism anyway.
