this is the fianl glorious and resplendent chapter of Karajan's career. HIS symphony. No one before or after him was or will ever be able to grasp the full meaning of this music. The Vienna Philharmonic is beyond comparison. The way Karajan conducts is incredible: small gestures, eyes widely opened, serenity and consciousness to be really into his final chapter of life. He will die some months later and the presence of death and infinity is clear in this performance. Nothing better on video.
Bruckner, Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, et al, they come only once, alas, in the history of mankind. TV and movies intervened, sadly. People lost sight of their souls. The world went mad. The endless quest for money and power brought it all to an end.
The video, the sound, and the performance of this Sony dvd Bruckner 8 is SO MUCH BETTER (not to mention riveting, captivating, enthralling, baffling, mesmerizing, profound, and beautiful) than the DG dvd Bruckner 8. It's weird.
I'm stunned. This is absolutely brilliant. Even Leonard Bernstein refused to conduct this symphony, declaring that Karajan's rendition could never be surpassed. He was right (although I'm sure that Bernstein's rendition would also have been amazing).
Is there a chance that you could please upload the other movements from this performance? I, and many others, would be most grateful. Thank you!
@videoclog It seems that the only composers who come close today are a small handful of film composers - much of modern classical seems to be a circlejerk of "look how *weird* and *unique* i'm being" over delivering something solid and, well, classic.
What's wrong (maybe nothing, i'm just asking) at the end the 1st violin at the left of Karajan seems to play a little off tempo and prolongs the last note. Was that intended?
@minasgekos yep. You're right. Good catch! It probably wasn't intended. You can even hear him after the whole orchestra has stopped. He's on tempo for all the notes, he just prolongs the last one way to much. Probably either wasn't watching or forgot that the last note was short (I know from playing this piece that the short ending is pretty surprising after all the grandiosity in the rest of the movement)
These last Bruckner recordings are astonishing accomplishments. They sound like transcendental operas in which Karajan has coached each member of the orchestra in the meaning of some unspoken text.
this is the last perfomance, with the 7. symphony of Bruckner and "Ballo in Maschera" of Verdi, of Herbert von Karajan. He died a few mounths after. And if you listen this performance (it's recorded for DGG), you really listen a testament. In this great symphony so full of light, a conquest of light. "La definitiva vittoria della luce sulle tenebre".
