i use scoria (volcanic rock) as its slightly porous and helps hold the water.. i have seen people use quartz.. but you might find that it contains lots of calcium and it will make it hard to get established.. not saying it wont work it'll just take a little longer to get there.. but you will have the bonus that your system wont go bellow 7.2ish Ph as the systems go toward acid as they age not so good for the fish and bacteria
the water looks quite dirty. Is it suppose to look like that?

@HomeDistiller Have you tried pea gravel? It is what I use and I have found it to be quite successful, although too much can be really heavy.

time lapse is great.
I'm considering doing the same sort of system - did you find any particular web sites useful?
Also, would it be fine to use a quartz stone (old mulch that I hate) rather than buy expanded clay?
