Such a poignant piece of poetry ~ made especially so by the fact that we lost him too soon. May God hold you in the palm of His hand, Dan, and may He give you thanks for all the peace you've spread throughout the world through the gift of your music.
When I first heard Dan Fogelberg's music in the 70s, it sounded a bit artificial and it didn't do much for me. But over time his music has grown on me. Now when I'm on Youtube late at night looking for something good to listen to, more often than not I end up playing Dan Fogelberg's music. It no longer sounds artificial. It feels more real than just about anything else out there.
I've loved Dan since I was introduced to him when I was a teen in High school in 1980. His music got me through college, a sad marriage and early divorce and this song in particular through the death of my love 11 years ago. It still makes me cry whenever I hear it. Thanks for all the help through the years Dan. RIP 12/16/07.
I have loved this song for so long now, and yet no Dan Fan has ever been able to definitively explain how this intro was placed in this video, but left off the masterpiece of the album :High Country Snows ! In any case, I love this intro, and suspect that it was left off the album because of the length of the intro! It is wonderful to have all of it on this great video I will treasure forever!!! BobbyK
Roberta led me to his music. I hope she's doing well, and I do miss her. She was of incalculable help to me in becoming a man, if I'm old enough to call myself that yet. ;])
I like that song alot.It is off his album called "High Country Snows" and I think that it should've been on his Essential Album and he got cheated in more ways than one by Sony which is a tragedy.
Never will Dan Folgelberg voice be replaced & may his music continue to soothe the souls of us fortunate enough to have to pleasure of hearing beautiful music played with heart and soul. His style is rare. For so many years I'd wished to meet him to say "Thank you". One day we may meet. for now his music lives on here on earth. peace
Its so good to see recent posts--a testament to a magnificent man who was equally talented in his songwriting, singing and musicianship (I've read he excelled in most things he did!) Dan was/is/will always be my fave---period!! Its hard, still, to see these videos and think he is no longer here to share his beautiful talents with us. Life isnt fair--one consolation-I believe he lived life to the fullest and enjoyed all the things he loved. RIP Dan--we will never forget you...
what a life lived so well, it seems that he was one of the fortunate ones, with focus fulfilling his destiny, the liveing legacy to the leader of the band. i never new him personaly but as others only through his lyrics and melody,it is truly hard for me to listen to these old songs that bring back memories of my former life with out deep tears and regret of my past life when all was youthfuly new in the innocent age.
I got to see Dan Fogelberg three times in concert: In 1985 with the whole band-beyond awesome; and two times solo, in 1991 and 1997. I even remember some of the stuff he said at the 97 concert! I was going to see him again, but he hurt his finger, and the concert was cancelled! Sincerely, BobbyK This album was a great bluegrass album, which Dan, like every genre of music he did, was great at!
My favorite video of all time. Got to see him in concert with the bluegrass band. That was absolutely the best concert I've ever been to. Bar none, including Elvis, The Beatles or Michael Jackson.
When I think of Colorado- It goes without saying... I think Of Dan Fogelburg. I will always love his music. We miss you so much Dan. Your music was everything to me and I always played it when driving through the mountains. Thank the Lord - I got lucky to see him in concert about 10 years before he left us.---way too soon.
I figured I'd ask just one more time where the introductory music came from before the song starts! I know Jay Bolotin wrote this song, but was the introductory music that precedes the song from Mr. Bolotin as well? Too bad there wasn't enough room on the album for the instrumental, as I enjoy it ! Well, thanks Dan Fans! Peace and Love, BobbyK
Hi to all! I was wondering if this introduction(instrumental) was only in the tv video, because, it wasn't on the High Country Snow album?!? Thanks, BobbyK
Can someone tell me where the introductory music came from, as it wasn't on the original album from 1985? I would be forever grateful! I got to see Dan in 1985 with the whole band, and solo in 1991 and 1997! I'll always love Dan's music the best! Sincerely, Bobby7771117
He had a house not far from my grandparents ans hiked down into the basin one night to meet the neighbors, sing and roast weenies. He was a super guy and I'm glad I got to hang out with him.
The more I listen to Dan's music, it becomes clearer that his guitar style is very unique. Seems like there is usually a touch of slack key in it. Amazing...
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
I can think of nothing to say other than "AWESOME." Thank you, and may Dan rest in peace; that's how he makes me feel when I listen to him - peaceful.
I cannot believe I am getting to watch this and listen to it and how much Hawaiian slack key is here and how beautiful he plays, how when I saw him live the music pours, overflows from him, but Hawaiian, on his High Country Snows Album, and to see this, my God.
Partly because of this song, I try to always be nice to women. We don't know what they've gone through, or what they're looking for. They're lovely creatures, and to think of them suffering is a heavy burden on the soul of anyone who calls themselves a real man. Ultimately, we're all just little boys and little girls, looking for the right way to go, and the right thing to do.
The passage of time absent of someone we care about is like a form of death. I think about her a lot more recently than I did for twenty years, and I trust that she's doing well. Twenty years. She helped to grow me up. If you don't keep moving, memories can be like quicksand........
@brennan80909 : Aawwwww, maaaaaan.....because of Dan's music, my girlfriend got me to put away the motorcycle and pay more attention to the romantic, honest side of life. I used to sing "Same Auld Lang Syne" to her, and she loved it.
I love Jeff Beck as a guitarist.....but not only is Dan Fogelberg a great vocalist, and pretty face....a superb guitarist. Dan we all miss you.....very much!
The magic of his music exists every time I listen and imagine what he saw or heard as he was writing. I still feel the loss of his being gone, but know that his spirit must be traveling through the beautiful places he takes us to. ..it is hard to go down easy.
To lose something precious makes it all the more precious. It doesn't lessen the profound sadness of the loss, but makes us glad to have had it for even a little while. The loss of this wonderful soul still hurts as much today as the day we lost him. God bless Dan and keep him in our hearts forever.
When this came out I had just hooked up with an old high school girl friend named LINDA,, we were both married, but we had an intense 6 week affair. She returned home to Germany where her husband was stationed and mailed me this song. My wife got the package but never said anything, LOL,, she knew, but she also knew it was over, God, im such a prick!! lol yeah we're divorce now, LOL
@ruracinme50 well, that affair wasnt the cause of our divorce,, im not sure which one caused it,, humm, could have been me screwing the baby sitter, or the 17 yr old hotie she caught me screwing in our car,, but it probably was from me bringing the teenager home to watch TV with us AFTER i got done screwing her,, some wives just dont like that for some reason,, what do YOU think>?
@ruracinme50 But, to answer your question,, was it worth it,, well,,, let me put it this way,, some people look at the Mona Lisa and think its just a painting worth a few bucks,, Others look at it and wish to pay millions for it,, So if I was to say that the affair that ended our marriage was a Mona Lisa,,,, I guess its worth would depend on a persons point of view, or in other words, HELL YES< and TWICE on Sunday!! Didnt i mention im a PRICK?
By my lights, there are two heartbreaking lines that define this song: "And she tries real hard to never be alone," and a longer one, "Her friends are sometimes lovers, though there'll always be another, she thinks about when nighttime lays on down." Amazing.
In my opinion, the very best singer/songwriter of my generation along with James Taylor and Karla Bonoff. True craftsman, I have all of his albums, I was lucky enough to have seen this brilliant musician live, and I will never forget why I love people who have the innate ability to write a song that touches people in so many ways. I can only wish I had the ability to affect people with my talents the way this man did. You are missed Dan, perhaps more than you will ever know. RIP Dan, we love you
@Buddawg1960 If only more people knew about Two Feathers compound. It healed my Mother's melanoma and if I would have had a way to get in touch with Dan I would have told him about it.
Most don't want to believe cancer can be cured by herbs, too much western medicine cut & poison propagandizing I guess.
@LibraMantra : There's a book by Louise Hay, titled "You Can Heal Your Life!"....if the information is a little late in your particular situation, hopefully, it might be of some use in the future.
My favorite part of this video is a rather obscure one. It comes about 4:11, where the hostess greets her visiting friend. When the hostess turns to the friend, after kissing the little girl, the friend brightens, smiles, and leans into the embrace. Somehow that one gesture seems to capture so many of the things I love about women.
I think this shows just how good of a singer he was. It was his try with Bluegrass and Country and I think that he did very well with it. His style is one that makes you feel good. His lyrics are heartwarming and his songs were those that you could sing along with. We lost him too soon. My girlfriend at the time( now my wife), introduced me to his music and I have been a fan ever since the mid 70's. We got to see him in concert and it was GREAT! Thanks Dan and may you R.I.P.
Thanks so much! I've been trying to find this for two decades. It touched me at the time -- I used to sit and wait for it on VH1, hoping it would get aired. You let me retrieve a part of my history.
Thanks so much for uploading this video so that we can see Dan in action skiing. Is this one of the few music videos that featured Dan still available on youtube?
aye great song. Remember this one asa kid couldn't remember the name so hadda search a bit. Just like other post's below the same rings true for me. Old memories resurfacing. One of the "haunting" melodies and just a timeless song to say the least.
Believe it or not ... this tune saw me through the dark night of my soul after my first wife left me ... it still leaves me filled with emotion when I hear it. The last verse has an odd optimism ... it's hard to explain. All I can say is that I really loved Dan and his musical contribution to humanity ... he will be missed.
Beautiful song, always wondered if he was singing about a woman who lost the one woman she'd ever love. The words suggest (at least to me) that her "lover" couldn't be her wife.
Very familar with the song but never seen this treasure before!! Does anyone know who this song was really about? Seems to have a real story behind it....
So sorry Daniel is no longer with us but in song. He was a ten.
Rare, beautiful, very moving, and very real are some of the terms that i'd use to describe this video and song. I thought I was the only person in the world that loved and remembered it. Thank god for youtube and all of these treasures that we can relive as many times as we want to.
Excellent song from his best album in my opinion. In 1985, the singer/songwriter genre was dead & I'm guessing he figured he could turn to Nashville, but this album didn't fly there, as anything with talent dies there. The LP was maybe a bit too bluegrass for Country fans, but I remember this song & video & it made the Top 10 AC chart & the LP made the Pop & Country Top 30. I bought the album & found a lot of great songs; it's still my favorite DF album ever. I miss him as we all do.
I was so excited to run across this video...I had almost forgotten that it existed...I have this cd and listened to it as recently as this morning on my way to work. Ironic, huh? I agree...this is one of his best! Thanks!!!
Such a poignant piece of poetry ~ made especially so by the fact that we lost him too soon. May God hold you in the palm of His hand, Dan, and may He give you thanks for all the peace you've spread throughout the world through the gift of your music.

Well written by Jay Bolotin, hauntingly sung by Dan. If this song does not touch your heart, you are missing a soul.

in my opinion, DF is the best : ). I think Jackson Browne too

It's so hard to look at this athletic, vibrant Dan... "it's hard to keep from cryin' "...
miss him so much!

If only Dan's prostate cancer had been caught early, he'd probably still be with us. Fellas , get that check-up!

As terrific a video (and song) as I remembered. Last saw it in about '85!

Thanks Dan and may you R.I.P.

my heart turned around the minute I heard this song for the first time when High Country Snows came out.
My heart is still turning.

He went to Nashville to make this record. Try to find the other players...it is an incredible roster of talented musicians.

Très belle chanson! J'ai découvert Dan Fogelberg en 1985 avec l'album "High Country Snows" et je suis devenu fan de cet immense artiste.

Great song, great video! I haven't seen this in years, I guess since Don Imus was hosting VH1, but liked it then and now. Thanks for posting!

Beautiful song, always wondered if he was singing about a woman who lost the one woman she'd ever love. The words suggest (at least to me) that her "lover" couldn't be her wife.

Rare, beautiful, very moving, and very real are some of the terms that i'd use to describe this video and song. I thought I was the only person in the world that loved and remembered it. Thank god for youtube and all of these treasures that we can relive as many times as we want to.

What a classic, an acoustic masterpiece and a fine piece of cinematic film work. We will miss Dan.
