When the still gains equilibrium....do you take off on different plates? What's your gallon per hour capacity? Thanks.....great looking setup. Perfect craft distillery setup.
I love how he's got Gorillaz playing in the background. Very fitting for the type of work he's doing that perticular moment. Makes great unintentional background. Still, its a very impressive local whiskey brewary, awesome.
@ASSEMblerEX he means if you use shitty equipment (lead or alumininum) or if you don't remove the methanol in the beginning...which is what can cause the blindness
Operationally for a full production facility, yes millions. But the cost of ownership and startup is much lower. Without divulging too much, the stills you see cost between $50,000 and $100,000 US. And these are really nice stills. They have a lot of components unnecessary for production of a great many spirits. We can make everything from single-run spirits like armagnacs and some whiskey styles to spirits as refined as vodka.
Buy books. Research. The real cost is not the equipment (a good sized home still can be had for less that $1000 US), but the time spent researching how not to cause sever liver, nerve or brain damage (and I mean severe). I don't like these laws, but there is a real reason it is illegal in most countries. Distilling is great fun and can be profitable, just make sure you & your brain live long enough to enjoy it.
Please don't make whiskey at home. This guy is going to go blind or give himself permanent neural damage. If you are really interested in making whiskey you must first do an enormous amount of research. If you are just interested in getting hooch on the cheap, make beer or wine. Producing spirits without a proper rectification technique will either destroy your body (or someone else's) or land you in federal prison (or both). If you don't know what I mean by "rectification technique" don't try.
@Tuthilltown this is complete bull... your saying if i make beer and drink it i will be fine but if i distill the same product (there by refining it) it will make me go blind? so distilling adds nasty chemicals to the beer? what a load of bull.. yes not legal that right but poison HELL NO!!!
@HomeDistiller from wehat I uderstand is you pitch the first amount which will kill ya and don't use lead solder and read up on it and you're be fine, Use onlt copper or stainless stills and again silver solder and you're good to go.
@welderman27 the lead is a no no.. but the thing about tossing the first part because it has methanol in it is not entirely right.. it distills just think the ethanol it will be a little more concentrated but it will still be present throughout the whole run.. but there would be more methanol in a bottle of orange juice then in you distillate.. the stories about people going blind etc are from very dodgey bootleggers adding things like antifreeze to get the strength up
@mordsgaudimachen All of its color and much of its flavor. Whisky is a neutral grain spirit when it leaves the still, and through the interaction with the oak in the barrel, it assumes its final character.
Nice spot! If you'll notice, when I am showing the process sheet at about 1:13, Pink Floyd's "Mother" is playing in the background. He says "You'll always be baby to me . . ." just as I show the tag for Baby Bourbon. Thanks for your interest. I'll try to get more video up soon.

Damn!...All you need is a 50 quart pot with an oak column...That makes a better whiskey than some store bought over priced distillation pots.

You mentioned liver and nerve damage, how would improperly distilling do that?
ASSEMblerEX 2 years ago
By distilling you also concentrate the "bad alcohols" which also happen to distill even before the ethenol.
By removing the first portions of a distilled product you eliminate it and your safe ;)

Rare that people go blind unless they drink pure head.

@Tuthilltown back in europe the only hard liquor we ever drank was homemade moonshine. many people made their own since buying it was expensive.

So the liquid was clear...does whiskey get its colour and some of the flavour from ageing in the barrels? I dont know much about it.

yes, all color comes from chared barrels
