@sexigreeneyes211 Thank you!! The woman is the mother of a coworker, who commissioned the drawing for her 50th birthday. She is not famous, though she's definitely beautiful enough. :) The picture was taken during a wedding of a friend. It was so much fun to draw!
@hydrokineticwave that's right - It's a glass that is held by two wood pieces top and bottom, both of which have wheels on the underside so that it's easy to move the glass back and forth. we actually have a provisional patent on it now, and are starting to sell them. If you are interested in seeing it in more detail, email me (see email address on my website) and I'll send you some visuals. =)
@twistedtree01 - Yes, if the easel is sturdy and you adapt it somewhat. I took some pictures of the setup we had before, and will try and sent them to you this weekend (within the limits of Youtube). Thanks for asking!
@kenobr - I also used a totillion, sable brushes, and a kneadable eraser. you can read more here: dietkefowler. com/ claudia-case-study.html (leave out the spaces)
@pebblesrocks2000 Sorry, forgot to reply... I got all of the supplies at Blick Art Supplies, except for the brushes, which I happened to still have from way back.
Amazing work! I have been having alot of trouble speeding up videos as some of my portraits take me days to complete I couldnt get the videos to speed up without pausing. I have found a way to do it now. I downloaded sony vegas pro 10 and after speeding it up I rendered it a few times to make it play without jumping. ;) try it, your work is amazing and it would be great to watch this without the pausing
@MegaPatty4 =) yeah, I tried another video wearing always the same sweater (it was winter, too), which also stood out... I think this one took about 40 hours of video-taped time, so you are pretty close! =)
@ajaralampidis I do use grids in the beginning. i didn't use to, but it just helps speed up a process that is already very time consuming. the grid is completely off the paper and the original photo by "45 seconds into the video" - and I think the magic really happens after that. but, opinions differ and that's alright.
Fantastic work. Acute eye for tonal gradation. A budding artist could learn alot from your very sound methods, too. PS. I had to giggle at the time lapse; it sometimes appeared as if you were dancing to the jazz. >:-()
@BackToPass Hi. I'd start with soft or medium. the softer it is the darker the lines, the easier to erase (because it doesn't scratch), and the easier to smudge (which you'd definitely want to experiment with). Have fun!
Your art is unquestionably brilliant, realistic, and detailed. It inspires others to further their own training in hopes of becoming as good as you are. As a video, however, I was somewhat disappointed. Most of your viewers would have appreciated the more traditional flowing video than the time lapse method used here. Unfortunately, many things get missed using this technique. Yes, you might have had to split this into 2 parts, but because your art is fantastic, people would've watch it!
darn, I went everywhere looking for it and everyone was lost lol. also what is the artist/name of the music playing? btw please keep posting videos, this has really inspired me to begin drawing again
@JMcGroary1 Make a maulstick, it's a super nifty tool and extremely easy to make - it's just a stick with a padded end. They're way more versatile than this.
Did this make anyone else excited in ways they shouldn't have been? Seeing great great art and hearing great music like that at the same time is almost euphoric.
@Saranghae1st yeah, i think a few weeks - would have to go back and look at the timestamps on the videos. In another drawing I videotaped, I made sure to always wear the same sweater for drawing... not sure which one is preferable... (?)
i don't you think your skills can improve any more than that. you pretty much photocopied the picture which is AMAZING!!!! you are a a huge inspiration.
@akhanian Thank you!! In this case, the fun part was actually that the photograph had been copied so many times that it had gotten a "grid" look, and when I drew it, I didn't drew that, so in a way, it looks "smoother" than the original. It was a LOT of fun to do this one.
very very impressive, seeing as your name is dietke, makes me think like... are you dutch or belgium? because they do remind me of the netherlands, anyway superb drawing, wish i could do that lol
Wow....that is beautiful!!! That definitely looks realistic!!! I love your techniques!! Who is the woman in the drawing....is she famous?

@DietkeFowler the way the sliding glass is set up would you be able to put it into an eisel and still have it slide freely ?

hi, i was going to buy some vine charcoal but i'm not sure how hard it should be (i'm a beginner)
can you tell me which would be best for me since i've never used charcoal before, extra soft, soft, medium, or hard?
