i remember i was supposed to go to my little league game but first i went on mlb.com and saw the perfect game was going on. I went on mlb.tv and watched the 8th and 9th inning live. Then when i saw the call, i couldnt believe what i saw. This is why MLB should allow instant replay for moments like this, at least from the 7th inning forward.
@themedicinemans On behalf of all humans let me be the first to welcome you to Earth. This video actually captures the final three (some will say four) outs of Armando Galarragas should have been perfect game. Half an inning of baseball in 3 1/2 minutes isn't really long
I remember watching this on MLB Network live. I'm a Blue Jay fan through and through, but this broke my heart into a million pieces. It's hard to watch. I get nauseous thinking about it.
@CVargas how? your watching a cell phone video on the third deck of a baseball stadium, you cant even see the ball. you have seen the play a thousand times on ESPN, he was out, theres no debating it. you could watch the play from any angle you want and he will ALWAYS be out.
The fact that Bud Selig did not reverse this call is a disgrace. He is just a waste of space and should've been fired years ago. We need a new commissioner and NOW!
worst ever was the 1985 world series game 6 9th inning 1 out the guy hit a ground ball it was fielded and thrown to first he was out by 2 STEPS! the next guy hit a pop fly which would have been the third out, then the guy on first ended up scoring, cardinals were robbed of their world seeries go on royals fans brag all about your one series title that you robbed cards got ten of them.
The 2nd worst call is the call at home plate in the 19th inning of the Pirates vs Braves game last week. But under the circumstances this is probably the worst.
@illusion627 I'm a huge braves fan and stayed up to watch that game. To be honest I was pissed it ended in that way. I was expecting at least one more inning. That was not fair to either team at all!!!
It was a terrible call from Jim Joyce. At least however, Joyce later apologized and genuinely felt bad. I'm more upset at that wimpy commish Selig who could have wronged a right but instead decided to add to his legacy of screw ups. I guess steroids, HGH and the like are not enough to mess up his reputation.
If ur not from detroit then u might not know. They gave armondo a new corvette the next game. Still bad call... Its cool we got verlander throwing a no no every other year. Lol
On an infield ground ball and the final out for a no no, I would have run a tad soft If I were the batter. He may have, but Joyce had his head up his ass for the most important call of the entire game. Hell, I may have even pulled a hammy on my way to first.
It's really not the worst call in baseball history, or even anywhere close to it. It was a bang bang play, though usually the runner would have been called out.
@jackierobinsonfan - I am a Tiger's fan and if he had been safe, but called out, that would have been worse. Then the scrutiny would have been that Jim Joyce GAVE Gallaraga his perfect game. You get the call right. Somehow, someway, get the call right. Joyce showed a ton of stones coming out after the game and saying he got it wrong. Many umps would have said that they saw it the way they called it. He was tore up, especially the next day when Leyland had Gallaraga take the lineup out.
@jackierobinsonfan I think I understand what you're saying, but if the ump honestly believes the runner is safe, then he should call safe. Only if he isn't sure either way should he lean towards out, but don't give the pitcher the game if he honestly didn't get that last out.
in that situation, if it were a close enough call i wouldn't want to be the one "responsible" for costing someone a perfect game. sucks. at least he had the balls to apologize afterwards.
as much as this call sucks, i'm sorry, but this is not the worst call in baseball history. the worst call in baseball history was made by don denkinger in the 1985 world series between the royals and cardinals. it was another bang bang call at first, he called the runner safe when he was clearly out. if he had made the correct call, the royals would have lost the game and the cardinals would have won the world series.
wow.. Tigers fans are so undedicated to their team. Leaving during a perfect game? Whats wrong with those guys. the place would be full and nobody would leave if a Twins pitcher had one
@westfootball32 Intelligent and enlightening comment there, genius. You stupid, un-original, childish, inbred piece of shit. You are a waste of fucking life. Please kill yourself soon. The world could use one less ignorant asshole.
it was a regular season game. Sure, it was a bad call that broke up a perfect game by a mediocre pitcher. But Denkinger's blown call in the 1985 world series was worse
I'm glad I grew up in New York. Fan reaction sounds like any first inning of a Mets or Yankees game and it's the last inning of a would-be perfect game.
People these days seem to take too much account in professional sports. There have been way worse calls, the tigers still won, and most pitchers are known for their ERA's, etc, not for perfect games. Yes, it would have been awesome to see the guy pitch a perfect game, but it's not the world. That is why Gallarraga was such a great sport with Joyce. Get over it people, there's always the rest of Gallarraga's career to rebuild up to that perfect game.
@celliot15 Are you crazy? The perfect game is a once in a lifetime deal. It's one of the most elusive things in sports. The odds are stacked against Gallarraga ever even coming close to pitching a perfect game again, and that's not a discredit to Gallarraga's pitching ability. I'm in the camp that it WAS the worst call ever during the regular season... technically there have been bigger botches, but it was the magnitude of the moment that seals the deal. Perfect Game = Baseball Heaven
