I remember playing and singing this song with a couple of other truckers at a makeshift camp made by parking our trucks in a row in the middle of nowhere in southwestern Texas. I had my S&W revolver on a leather belt holster, and a dusty cowboy hat and with the cool night air and starry sky, and the smell of the bonfire, it really felt like we were in the West during the cattle drives and buffalo hunts again.
Can someone please tell me what the lyrics are to the chorus? I looked them up online but there is no way she says "lays my weary head" as they list on most sites. Anyone know what she's really saying?
Love good old mountain music. makes me remember my Granny. She was born and raised on the KY WV boarder as was my mom. We use to go down there at least once a year and see all the family that still lived down there.
You can still hear songs of this type here in the hills of & hollers of Tennessee! We have folk festivals all over the state in the summer, and people come from all over the US just to hear it. Our neighbors the North Carolinians are just over the Mountains and in the western part of the state you can also type of music, "Mountain Music!" I believe the Reeltime Travelers are from there. Great Song!
@DeuceMP2 I would call it "Appalachian", Folk, or just Old Time Mountain Music. The first settlers to the mountain area of Tennessee and North Carolina were of Scot & Irish decent. They brought their fiddle's and musical instruments with them and made their own music from folk lore words. That, is what many say was the fore-runner of Country music as we know it today.
This is the type of song sang and played by old-timers on a Saturday night. They would get together, invite neighbors to come and bring their instruments to play. Thus, they would sing and dance until the wee hours for entertainment. Most of the time it was the only time they ever saw their neighbors!
@Rachelater117 Hell yeah. In the iron ore mining towns in the Badlands, every Saturday night for us truckers is about poker and whiskey by the keg. Not just truckers, but miners and railroad men join us too. There ain't nothin' better than truckin', drinkin', and singin', and hearing the locomotive horns echoing off the distant mountains.
@Rachelater117 (continued) I admit, I lost a lot of money from playing poker out there, but never once had any hard feelings 'bout it. It is about friendship and having a good time in a rough country where for us most of the time it is just traveling thousands of miles on lonely roads hauling ore. Hell, I fucking love all of those songs.
Absolutely Beautiful!!! Thanks Gawaine687 for this and all the Cold Mountain songs! This is true "Appalachian Folk" music at its best! Most originated from the early settlers of the mountain area of TN and NC Most were of Scot/Irish decent, bringing their songs and musical instruments with them from their homeland.
at least at the oscars, no, as lotr won a lot that year(and deservedly so), but the score was nominated for an oscar and many other awards, as were the alison krauss songs.
I think it won the BAFTA for Best Original Score.... I think that The Lord and Cold Mountain deserved to share Best Score and Best Song... it should have been a tie!
This movie and the music blew me away. Unbelievably beautiful and moving.

@bluegrasgirl Yes, this is Martha singing. She is an unbelievable talent. One of the most underrated writers of this type of this genre.

Song reminds me of Buchanan and Dickenson Counties in SW Virginia. Right on Kentucky-West Virginia border. Great people... tough country.
