I had to lie in a makeshift grave once, along with several other 'bodies',and sit on a beach in Cleethorpes in just a t shirt short and sandals for 2 short films by the Northern Film School, and it wasn't fun as it was being filmed in the middle of winter, so I can equate to what Michael Caine had to go through for that very final scene, with the cold North Sea lapping around him.
Yes, britecho, you're right. It's all just a job for those pro hitmen, isn't it? Nothing personal, no hate for your victim - just business. Chilling indeed!
Excellent shot, caine was turned sideways to the shooter as he prepared to throw the shotgun, yet he still got him right through the front of his head.
The guy's name that shot him was never known. He had the insignia 'J' on his ring, so that's how he was identified in the credits. He was a hired gun! He was hired by Cyril Kinnear, a local gangster, whose arrest Jack had just orchestrated. Unfortunately for Jack the arrest was just too late. The clinical way J shoots him then dismantles his rifle and walks off back home ' job done' is extremely chilling! Great movie.

@pix042 I think the moral to the film was,you can't take the law into you're own hands or the Devil takes care of his own, one way or another.
