  • From one old white man to another,

Really very nice job that! Sweet.

  • @Scottie1152 Thanks for the comment, old-timer. Poor little Martha hasn't had a visitor in quite awhile. This tune is like "Classical Gas". Too many covers to choose from.

  • this song is amazing are looking at the tab? great cover

  • one time a play it too.

    beautiful.

  • bravissimo! ciao dall'Italia I like your version

  • Grazie. Thanks for noticing this much neglected video.

  • Great song... smooth passages.. sets the mood for a restful night onwards to an easy as sunday morning new day awakening

Excellent travail sur cette magnifique mélodie, je vais me lancer dans

    l'apprentissage de cette chanson...

  • Merci, monsieur.

  • HI Mike, Being a "hack" rock guitarist, I'm not in a league to comment on anything except how great it sounded. Your technique is superb - thanks for the enjoyment-!

  • Thanks, knuckles. I look forward to seeing some of your videos.

  • Bravo !

  • As for picks... When I have to let my nails heal, I play with ProPiks. They ARE an adjustment, but when I go back to having nails our back on, it feels SO good to be "in touch" with my guitar...

  • I have the sheet music from the recorded version of this song, and it was done in Open E.

    Very nice play... AGAIN!

    Bob Hunter

  • Thanks for watching. What is the tuning for open "E". You'd think after 48 years I'd be acquainted with all tunings by now. I wonder whether that is the key used by Nic Jones in his tune "Canadee I-O".

  • Normal is: E-B-G-D-A-E

    E-B-G#-E-B-E

    1-2-3-4-5-6th string

... and no worries... nice playing! I spent the last hour working in a new chord shape for Classical Gas. I can't wait to get the replacement power supply for my daughter's Sony movie camera. I want to get my rendition of it on YouTube too!

  • an addendum: Have you ever heard Jerry Douglas' version of Little Martha? He plays it on the Dobro, and it's incredible. I think it's on "Look out for Hope."

  • As a matter of fact I downloaded his version from iTunes last year. It's interesting to listen to these viruosos tackle an un challenging tune like this. They often seem compelled to embellish an arrangement to the detriment of the tune. I like the way Duane Allman played. It's perfect.

  • I DO agree with you to a point... Jerry Douglas' version his the interpretation played within the confines of his instrument. It's HIS realm, and given those constraints, I thought he did a nice job.

I have to agree with you on your last point, though... I like the way Duayne Allman played it best as well.

Wasn't it written for two guitars though?

  • I've heard that before. But it doesn't really sound like two guitars were needed. Unless Duane couldn't finger pick.

  • Sorry, Open E is under "Open Tuning" on wikipedia. Its bascialy open D capo'd up 2 frets. Yours is still the best cover I have heard!!!

  • Look it up on wikipedia Open_E_tuning

  • Thanks for the favorable comment. I gave the 12-string a try myself back when I was a Leo Kottke fan. It didn't work out well.

  • Re: Little Martha - This is the best cover of this song that I have ever heard. Thank you for having it on youtube. I think the original is in Open D, just like you played it in.

  • Thanks. Someone alleged that it was originally in open E, but it seems comfortable in open D. I wonder whether there is a video out there of him playing it. I'd love to see that.

  • This is excellent as well! You're a good guitar player! Thanks for posting these recordings.

    Regards, Wilfried

  • Thanks for listening. I'd like to post some more videos, but I've been experiencing serious nail damage.

  • Hope you get well soon. Perhaps it's the right moment to try fingerpicks or plectrum? Interestingly, there were guitar players in the past which preferred playing the guitar without nails, for example Carcassi and Sor. Even Tárrega converted to playing with bare fingertips 9 years before his death.

  • I've been trying to play without nails for about a week and a half. It's not an easy transition. I wonder if Tarega switched by choice or necessity. I've order something called "Players Nails". I think Julian Bream gave them a favorable review.

  • Good question. But at least i know some ukulele players playing without nails: James Hill and WS64. James Hill is one of the world best players, check his playing out, it's awesome! Maybe it's easier on ukulele without wound strings, though. However, if you're used to nails, those "Players Nails" might be a good choice for you! Thanks for the hint, it might be interesting for me as well. Regards, Wilfried

  • Turn that truss rod. That will fix it. I adjust my acoustic (Martin) every few months.

  • Glad you liked it. It's been a favorite of mine since I first heard it over 30 years ago. I found this arrangement on the internet. It's an open-D tuning. I used to play it in standard tuning in the key of E. This arrangement is easier and sounds better.

  • Thanks for the favorable comment. I've always enjoyed this tune. I look forward to your versions of it.

  • Little martha facts.

Duane Allman claimed this came to him in a dream in which Jimi Hendrix was playing it for him in a hotel room. He woke up and started playing it.

Title is taken from a statue at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, Georgia, where the band would often jam. It is the grave of Martha Ellis, who died in 1896 at age 12. Duane Allman and Berry Oakley are buried at the same cemetery.

  • I didn't know Jimmy Hendrix could finger pick. Maybe he learned after his death.

  • Great...!

Many greetings from Bremen / Germany

  • Wonderfull ...that was so very well played :)

  • Thanks for listening.

  • Excellent. V nice sounding guitar you have there. I like the rich colours you get with the open tuning. More please.

  • Thanks. I used to play this in standard tuning until I found an arrangement on the internet in open D. It's much less work and it sounds better. The guitar is a Taylor I got at a local guitar store. They had marked it down to their cost, so it would have been stupid of me not get it.

  • Perfect!... your technique is very refined.. you make fantastic use of tone and colour!.. something i need to work on.. but you have now given me a something to aspire too! :)

  • Hey, that's just great! Very nice played. And what a beautiful tune! MORE!

    Respect,

    Peo

  • Excellent. Thanks for posting.

  • very nice...Bravo !!!

  • Ive just watched about 10 versions of this song including leo kottke's and I think I just watched the nicest...

  • Well, thanks jm. Considering I hadn't practiced it much before recording it, that's quite a compliment. It was my test video.

  • i agree with im3004.. nice playing. i'd say nice work.. but you seemed to take the work out of it. the way it should be. thanks

  • Thanks for the kind words. I think it's a little too fast. I need to slow down sometimes. I have a tendancy to rush Classical Gas as well. In a few days I hope to upload my abusive rendition of that old tune as well.

  • very nice version of a great tune....make more vids !

  • Thanks for the positive feedback. This was my "test" video to see how Youtube would convert my video. They seem to have touble losing a/v sync.
