  • @JasonWB007 I agree. I bought LC's album to learn this song and, good as he and the album is, it's lame compared to this version.

  • I didn't know Stringer Bell from " The Wire " played bass.

  • Easy follow ...and Fly on Dream Wings!!

  • That old man on the keys. It doesn't matter how old you are. What matters is whether you have it or not.

  • Comment removed

  • THAT'S how it done!

  • a guitar animal...wonderful musican !!

  • wow, ritenour sure has a through grasp of electric guitar technique as well as classical - bends, harmonics, shredding - a compleat guitarist

  • @SupernalOne His nickname isn't for "Captain Fingers" for nothing!

  • dude.. .the drummer is really amazing

  • @roki92 Oscar Seaton

  • the drummer holds the groove very nicely and when lee opens up with the beautiful riff at 1: 30 it is just epic

  • Lee is awesome, look who he surrounds himself. So much talent! That drummer is sick!

  • I do love when emperor palpatine picks up his stick

  • ¡Estupendos!

    Stupendous!

  • Jul 23-Jul 25, 2010 @ Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland!

  • Crazy how such an old guy can still play so fast. Can't say much for Grandpa on the keyboard........a dying art form this genre. Didn't fusion die in the 80s? No wonder they are in Japan? Japan is the last of the western industrial countries where musical preference catches up to the rest of the modern world but where the people can pay $50 a seat.

  • @bertdanger

Dave Grusin, the "grandpa" on the keyboard is one of the jazz industry greats. You can't judge this man from his participation on one song that didn't feature keyboards. Seoul Korea is in KOREA, not Japan. They did this piece at Yoshi's in Oakland and everyone loved the show. LOVED it.

  • @bertdanger u lost the plot

  • @bertdanger Music is not a matter of age it never has been. Commenting is something you do when you have knowledge of the music you're commenting on. Topography is something you get at primary school. Which cave do you live in?

  • Smokin' Mirrors is the name of my digital company.

  • Awesome, thank you SO much for posting , this is one of my favorites!!!

  • Lee Ritenour enlouqueceu a galera no Free Jaz Festival de 1987!!!!!!!!!

    BY Macgyver

  • he is genius!!!!

  • spyro gyra influence

  • @fenderasd

not a chance! i love spyrogyra but you're comparing nectarines and peaches! Both delicious but totally different textures. you don't even have to listen that closely to know the difference.

  • lee :

i'm gonna play with the red guitar

    Audience:

    OHHHHHHHHHHH!

  • this song is a classic, what a masterpiece.

  • such damn lovely solo's by master ritenour....and a really hooking song!

  • I don't understand songs like this. You have a natural organic sounding drummer, bassist and guitar player and then a keyboard that sounds like something you would buy in Zellers in the 80s.

  • thats wahts so nice about it =)

  • @m0b1liz3

doesn't seems so terrible to me.. possibly a Yamaha emulating-sampling an Hohner or Wurlitzer and FM synthesis (the marimba sound)

  • un grand guitariste ,on ne s'ennuit jamais a écouter un virtuose

    michel ,drome

  • what's bass is melvin davis using in this song? Is it sadowsky? fender? or a Ken Smith Design?

  • looks like a fender jazz no?

  • maybe fender precision?

  • it's 5-strings bass.

    Ken Smith Design.

  • @catsduke

fender -j bro. totally different sound from a ken smith. active.

  • 14/4 time signature...beastly!!!!

  • 7/4 bro

  • @paisteguy799

doesn't matter; it's the same, depends on how you see it

  • well...actually it is in 7/4, just listen to the bass line and thats how they are feeling it...their not feelings double time

  • Yep, totally fits. The main guitar motif starts on the "1". I would say it's felt in 4/4 plus 3/4, and of course it would be written in 7/4 time sig.

  • @aihoschema

the key is to follow the kick with an ear for the "stagger" in there. really neat once you feel/anticipate it.

  • Very good! Y love this song!

  • abolutely ;D just laid-back and flawless!

  • Such a warm tone from the lovely Es335 Semi hollowbody :)

  • Lovin' the ES-335 tone. The highs sing and the lows are deep warm and mellow ..."like butter"

  • buena rola

  • I would love to have this song on my wedding day...

    lol

  • wow so that is to play music...

  • Great song! Good drummer too - hes unpredicable, i love it!

  • This is so much better than the studio recording..., i think it sound bett with an electric than it does with the acoustic

  • awesome guitarist but he sounds best with the strat and also the acoustic. the 335 need a rebuild to suit modern styles.

  • lee ritenour plays so smooth, i love it

  • awesome band

  • Tight.

  • Nice drummer - don't know him at all, how old is he?

  • lee world class guitar love it

  • beautiful beautiful

  • isn't that omar hakim on drums? it is omar hakim!

  • No, it is Oscar Seaton

  • thanx.

  • that drummer was killin'

  • People always seem to criticize and ridicule that which they don't understand. Lee is a living legend, one of the best ever, and any seasoned player knows this. Whether you love this music or not, it's to be appreciated for its craftsmanship.

  • mosquito sound on guitar hahaha!

  • su nombre es Oscar Seaton...tremendo groove...

  • alguien puede decirme como se llama el baterista q aparece aka?

  • melvin davis blows me away

  • wauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...ese loco es casi tan bueno como el guitarrista de nicaragua en llamas!!!!...jejjej...jesy james....

  • I admit that word "intolerant" is not the most suitable. I only wanted to say that it is not wrong when somebody doesn't love this kind music. Percetion of music (and any other kind of art) is very subjective and therefore you shouldn't say that somebody is not okay when he/she doesn't like music you consider perfect.

    Respect and enjoy your music!

  • If you don't like it - don't watch it - don't comment on it - don't start a conversation on youtube about it. Just go watch Slipknot and let us enjoy some real music. I swear, I just can't get away from YouTube idiots to absolutely must argue in the comments of every video! It's amazing. Anyway, your Slipknot video is calling.

  • Again; if you don't love jazz when it's played with this sort of skill and passion, there's something funadamentally wrong in your neural pathology!

    Love it!

This is why, it's not the antiseptic, watered down, monotonously copied "smooth Jazz" formula that's killing the enthusiam for jazz in the listening community!

  • hmm, what an intolerant opinion :(

  • I don't see an honestly arrived at observation as "intolerant" I appreciate the talent of all musicians, I do however, reserve my right to allow my personal likes or otherwise to temper my opinion of same. As a musician of many years f training, I'd like to see "cutting edge" musicians have their place in the market.

  • hi ivokabel. i really wish i could brainwash u into appreciating what these cats are doin!

  • The Excellent Drummer's got a Brian Blade-ish Hunchy thing going in his playing. Love this band with Legends and new talents.

  • amazing drummer!

it happens to the best drummers too :P

  • Speaking of Rit, he performed here in the Philippines last March 10 and everybody enjoyed it. I would like to ask you, how would you compare Lee with guitar players like pat metheny, larry carlton and mike stern? How would you rate Ritenour in terms of the guitar players that I mentioned? Thanks

  • Thanks Lee-Reggie, NYC (Blue Note)

  • i love rit, it's great....also with FOURPLAY

  • Lee kicks butt...LOVE IT! I have that performance but at the Blue note in NYC with Joel Rosenblatt @ drums

  • I love all of them, Larry , Lee, Pat,...

But I like more lee than Larry ! In my opinion Lee is the more complete guitarist. From Classic over Latin to Jazz Guitar, he can play everything in a perfect way. Larry is a more blues guitarist. But I love the CD they recorded together "Larry & Lee". It s one of my most favourite CDs !

And Fourplay is also awesome, even with Larry or with Lee !!

Pat Metheny is outstanding ! Lyle Mays and pat are my Godess !

  • Hi, I'm watching again your video. It seems I dont get tired watching them perform. Could you also post some other tunes from this performance? Can I ask a question? How wud you compare Ritenour with the likes of larry carlton and pat metheny?

  • Thanks to watching video what I uploaded. I have full length video of this performance. I'll upload other tunes of this performance when not busy. ^^

Actually I love Larry Carlton than Lee Ritenour.

Just Lee's video is easy to get than Larry's that. :)

And I love Pat Metheny too.

  • please keep uploading more of that gig! This is just too goood...i love them both ; but still , Lee is the less predictable and is my favorite .

thanx for giving us more of this performance ,I'll check regularly

and i put some my own from Paris ' Gig...

  • Wow, great clip of Dave & Lee! Where did you get this? I guessed I've completed all of Rit's concert videos over the years since '84. The ones that I'm looking for, I'm not sure if there is, are Lee's concert videos during the '70s. Is this video available on DVD or in the market? Thanks.

  • Thank you. This performance was in Seoul, Korea.

Recorded and broadcasted by EBS(Korean broadcasting company).

And it was HD(High Definition). :)

I recorded full length of this video on HD. ^^)V

    But it's size if about 7.5GB. T_T

  • I have been a fan of both Rineour and Grusin over the years. This is a great performance, but I hate to tell you, this sounds too much like an old 1970's hit by the godfather of Korean rock, "SHIN Joong-Hyun"! The particular piece of his is called, "Mee-In [Beautiful Woman)" in Korean and was and is the most significant piece of "electric guitar" music and a major hit (continued in Part II).

  • Part II on Ritenour's music vs. SHIN Joong-Hyun:

Shin just had a "comeback memorial concert" a short while ago (in Seoul) and I happened to hear Ritenour's "Smoke 'N' Mirrors" today on the radio and was so surprised at the unmistakeable similarity between the two pieces. While I don't mean to say that LR plagiarized the piece, I do find it ironic and a bit curious that this performance was recorded live in Seoul, Korea of all places (how about that for a coincidence!).

    (Cont'd in Part III)

  • Try checking out this link of a video performance by SHIN Joong-Hyun, the godfather of Korean rock. The piece is called, "Mee-In (Beautiful Woman)," which was a monster hit from the early 70's:
