@jsquad31 Trench warfare was horrid, in fact the Roman Wars were more brutal than WWII.
No offense but in WWII you had more instant deaths, be it gunfire or bombs. In Ancient Rome many soldiers died in the battlefield hours after having their leg cut off, etc.
WWI had trench warfare which was mentally scarring as well as the disease it spread. The Spanish Influenza has to be included with WWI.
@edyoung44 i agree, but you can see they dont make video games of ww1 as it would be boring gameplay and a lack of weapons etc. but there are some pretty good ww1 films out there, and spielbergs warhorse is out soonish
@BlackMasterRoshi i dont need you to lecture me on the history of the First World War. ok in the context of my comment describe how a WW1 game would work? in terms of gameplay mechanics, narrative and diversity of missions. A WW1 flight sim would work but anything else wouldnt sell to a mass audience
@TheSzemelak it would probably not sell because most people are like you and do not understand the diversity of the war. let me ask you, 90% of WW2 games and movies is city fighting in europe. do you think that's what 90% of the actual combat was like?
Immobile trenches are certainly easy to show in movies, which is why most producers chose those kinds of scenes. because they are cheap. There were SpecOp raids in WW1, there was mountain warfare, there were massive land grabs without entrenchment
Boring gameplay? Same can be said about every ww2 game - you land in Normandy, and get a bullet in the head in the first minute. End game.
As a ww1 strategy game developer I can say that such statements just mean that you know almost nothing about ww1. There was much more than just trench warfare - take for examples Eastern front, first months of Western front , almost all 1918 year, war in Alps, Palestine Campaign, battles in Caucasus mountains.
Maybe because it was such a depressing war, with millions being sacrificed to fight for "the glory" of their nations.
Personally I think WWI was an important lesson for the people. Also, it pretty much spelled the end of the European imperial powers and their greed (which was why the war was all about in the first place).
@edyoung44 Well, what do you think a WWI video would be like? Very boring. Most of the battles were fought in trenches. Think of doing what these poor souls are doing in a video game. It would be rather boring wouldn't it? And there are movies. Good ones such as this one.

@SvalbardJanMayen1976 that's why european union was made for... my generation is the first one which didn't go to war since france exists (except Afghanistan, but compared to the previous wars, it's a joke)
Its so danm hard to belive that this took place less then a century ago. And we needed another world war along whit a cold war to end the slaugther, we humans truely are cruel to itchother.
@tyskbulle Well honestly for British Empire, USA and France war ended but not for germans. Germany wasnt realy defeated in 1918. Its the Goverment who gave up, not military. Military people felt horibly betrayed by its own goverment so for them war wasnt over so wwII was only sort of continuation war
All the german high command thought the situation on the west front was hopeless and lost. There Is enormus of fact to support this, thier first move were to blame polticians and vice versa. This is the endless spiral of the "backstabbing theory" supported by the nazis after the war. But like you said, the war didnt end for the majority of the german populace that wanted revenge for thier still young nation.
@tyskbulle Yes you are right but in November 1918 Germans were not ffnished of yet, they could still resisit few more months. Allready in November germanys economy was close to collapse but not the army. Soldiers morals were almost bottom rock but high commands plans for continuing fighting were intact
@PolishWingedHussar10 True, but whit gaps where fromed in the german lines, and moral so low that some germans surrender at the sight of assualts. Basicly the allies coud steamroll the hole of Germany whit alitle luck.
@tyskbulle Yes I heard story about one canadian cavalry man when he was completely shocked when almost whole company of german troops surrendered without shot being fired and that wasnt only incident of this kind in the end of that war
Do the Germans allow the Belgians to retrieve their dead at the end ? Looks to me that they are picking bodies up from no-Mans land at the end . Am I wrong ?
Why don´t they have subtitles instaed of this terrible voice dubbing. I know it´s because people might not manage to read them in time, but if that´s the case, then they need practice - so add subtitles amd combine pleasure with education!
they try to make theaudience understand what it was like,a British war veteran said before he died.'you know what a hailstorm is,thats about tte chance you have of walking through no-mans land and not getting cut up by bullets, shrapnile, shells, and snipers ect'
Here one guy of a Russian livejournal proposed to do following with a pacifist:
One dark night kidnap him and put in a car, which has to be driven to an army polygon. There show him a culture program: fist pull on him on a bulletproof vest and a helmet and put into handcuffs and lay him ino a trecnh, after which shoot around him with a mortar. No sadism - the most expirienced gunlayer should be taken. Then give him an assault rifle and force him to run on a MG nest. Then return him into the
trecnh and ride over him with a tank - not 1 time. After which he could be unchained and let free, but before it he must be asked 1 cuestion - "Did you understand now?".
If what, this was a joke.
And yes, pacifists coming running on such videos have pestered me.
I don't quite understand what this experience would teach a pacifist - it would just make him more of a pacifist. It would make more sense to inflict this on an Internet warmonger...
America didn't enter the war until 1917. However Americans did fight in the war as soldiers of other countries. The Lafayette Escadrille is one example where American fliers served in the French forces as pilots.
the horrors of wars and of this battle precisely are actually much more horrible than those which we see in this movie
The machine-guns, the artillery of all sizes (thousands of artillery guns in a small territory), never seeing during the WW1, did not make that to kill, they cut out the bodies, tore off the heads and the members, made human soup :-(
The soldiers were obliged to pass on the remainders human of their friends to leave to the charg and to be made massacre in their turn
And that lasted without being to stop for 8 months making hundreds of thousands of French and German deaths !! :-(
Verdun was the biggest and the most important battle of the WW1 cose if french army had lost it's all the west front and all allies whowho would have lost (never the U.K. could have continued alone the battle on the ground)
...
...
NEVER THAT BETWEEN US EUROPEAN BROTHERS !!!!
See for example my video and the explanations of the Battle of Verdun in video-answer to the top
Verdun was a huge battle and a very important battle, in that it permanently weakened the French Army and led directly to the Mutiny of 1917, as well as weakening the German Army. However, it was neither the biggest battle of the war nor is the reason you give for its importance limited to Verdun alone; if the French had been decisively defeated in any battle between the First Marne in 1914 and the Third Aisne in 1918 the Allies would have suffered the calamity which you limit only to Verdun.
Its for me a pure personal and false interpretation of the things
The objective of German Army Commandment in Verdun was not only to break the front
It was to attrack by a very big attack the whole French Army in the hope to destroy it or a big part of it by the use on a size ever seen in this time of number and volume of the armaments.
And of course if France had been obliged to capitulate it was the end of the front in the west and the capitulation of all allied (The U.K. without France could not have supported any war on the continent)
We would have lived before the hour the defeat and the retirement of 1940 when the U.K, i point out, made also in total retirement (that you always forget to point out it about the defeat of 1940)
Its unfortunate that the conclusions you draw from the battle of Verdun have no relation to history or military strategy. If the French were defeated at Verdun, it could quite possibly have been a decisive German victory. The same can not glibly be stated about France holding Verdun; after Verdun the British Army became the primary Allied army on the Western Front. Verdun was not the largest, bloodiest or most influential battle of the First World War. What are you actually trying to claim?
None of the points that you have put forward qualify the battle as the largest or most important. The number of casualties incurred at the Somme was far higher in an equally small area than those at Verdun on both sides, and the Somme was the battle which had a greater long term effect in that the quality of German infantry was permanently reduced. Third Aisne came much closer to defeating France than Verdun. Verdun was not a decisive battle, it had no war-altering outcome.
Well kampfer you miss the point. The somme was indeed larger. But the main brutal fights found place on an area of less than 10 square miles. Please read more about the battle of verdun. And you will find out that verdun was actually very decisive. IF the germans would break the lines. the road to paris would be open. And at that time the engish would be too late to launch an attack at the somme.
Verdun would have been a decisive German victory. The same can not automatically be said in reverse in the event of a French victory. Verdun failed to result in any war-changing situation, saved that French attrition in 1916 drove the Army to mutiny in 1917, and let it incapable of assuming offensive operations for a year after that. The Battle of Verdun was not more likely to see French defeat than the Marne or the Third Aisne.
@cumbas lolz i watched this in class ... man it was terrible. the life trenches was also bad. there was diseases they used dead soldiers to barracade the trench, and they had to sleep in the trenches sometimes it would rain, waist deep .
So I dont write very well English (that it's sure ^^ it is not my native language but in spite of that one understand me practilly all the times)
I say : "YES of course you are right the "gaz moutarde' (in French ^^) also was terrible in this battle"
So I dont understand your last message ?
Young man I am French & a big fan and a true specialist who studies the WW1 since 35 years now especially about "Verdun" & I think that I have nothing to learn by you about all that :-)
if you want to learn more informations & precisions about this battlethan in your USA school & in a few minutes, I am sure of that when we see how you learn History in the USA :-) ^^
"Monsieur Jones, you're required to the hairdresser, and report immediately! And, by the way, what happened to your bike?" A guy who behaved like that would have been in dire straits, in the French army of 1914-18 – even an American volunteer. This said, this is an excellent, clever video series.

tyskbulle 1 year ago
@tyskbulle Well honestly for British Empire, USA and France war ended but not for germans. Germany wasnt realy defeated in 1918. Its the Goverment who gave up, not military. Military people felt horibly betrayed by its own goverment so for them war wasnt over so wwII was only sort of continuation war
PolishWingedHussar10 1 year ago
@PolishWingedHussar10
All the german high command thought the situation on the west front was hopeless and lost. There Is enormus of fact to support this, thier first move were to blame polticians and vice versa. This is the endless spiral of the "backstabbing theory" supported by the nazis after the war. But like you said, the war didnt end for the majority of the german populace that wanted revenge for thier still young nation.
tyskbulle 1 year ago
@tyskbulle Yes you are right but in November 1918 Germans were not ffnished of yet, they could still resisit few more months. Allready in November germanys economy was close to collapse but not the army. Soldiers morals were almost bottom rock but high commands plans for continuing fighting were intact
PolishWingedHussar10 1 year ago
@PolishWingedHussar10 True, but whit gaps where fromed in the german lines, and moral so low that some germans surrender at the sight of assualts. Basicly the allies coud steamroll the hole of Germany whit alitle luck.
tyskbulle 1 year ago
@tyskbulle Yes I heard story about one canadian cavalry man when he was completely shocked when almost whole company of german troops surrendered without shot being fired and that wasnt only incident of this kind in the end of that war

And yes, pacifists coming running on such videos have pestered me.
berlinSS 2 years ago
I don't quite understand what this experience would teach a pacifist - it would just make him more of a pacifist. It would make more sense to inflict this on an Internet warmonger...

The Somme, the Argonne, Gallipoli and Verdun, all these battles were misery, death and fear on a scale we, here in the future cannot comprehende.

America didn't enter the war until 1917. However Americans did fight in the war as soldiers of other countries. The Lafayette Escadrille is one example where American fliers served in the French forces as pilots.

the horrors of wars and of this battle precisely are actually much more horrible than those which we see in this movie
The machine-guns, the artillery of all sizes (thousands of artillery guns in a small territory), never seeing during the WW1, did not make that to kill, they cut out the bodies, tore off the heads and the members, made human soup :-(
The soldiers were obliged to pass on the remainders human of their friends to leave to the charg and to be made massacre in their turn
cumbas 2 years ago 16
And that lasted without being to stop for 8 months making hundreds of thousands of French and German deaths !! :-(
Verdun was the biggest and the most important battle of the WW1 cose if french army had lost it's all the west front and all allies whowho would have lost (never the U.K. could have continued alone the battle on the ground)
...
...
NEVER THAT BETWEEN US EUROPEAN BROTHERS !!!!
See for example my video and the explanations of the Battle of Verdun in video-answer to the top
cumbas 2 years ago
Verdun was a huge battle and a very important battle, in that it permanently weakened the French Army and led directly to the Mutiny of 1917, as well as weakening the German Army. However, it was neither the biggest battle of the war nor is the reason you give for its importance limited to Verdun alone; if the French had been decisively defeated in any battle between the First Marne in 1914 and the Third Aisne in 1918 the Allies would have suffered the calamity which you limit only to Verdun.
Kampfer1445 2 years ago
Im in complete disagreement with you
Its for me a pure personal and false interpretation of the things
The objective of German Army Commandment in Verdun was not only to break the front
It was to attrack by a very big attack the whole French Army in the hope to destroy it or a big part of it by the use on a size ever seen in this time of number and volume of the armaments.
An industrial war with excess
...
cumbas 2 years ago
And of course if France had been obliged to capitulate it was the end of the front in the west and the capitulation of all allied (The U.K. without France could not have supported any war on the continent)
We would have lived before the hour the defeat and the retirement of 1940 when the U.K, i point out, made also in total retirement (that you always forget to point out it about the defeat of 1940)
...
cumbas 2 years ago
And of course that Verdun is the greatest battle of the WW1
- By its duration (+ 8 months)
- By its industrial size and the number and volume of the armaments used
- By the number of soldiers engaged by the 2 camps & the number of wounded and killed
& all that on ridiculous small surface.
Still there your personal interpretation is false

Its unfortunate that the conclusions you draw from the battle of Verdun have no relation to history or military strategy. If the French were defeated at Verdun, it could quite possibly have been a decisive German victory. The same can not glibly be stated about France holding Verdun; after Verdun the British Army became the primary Allied army on the Western Front. Verdun was not the largest, bloodiest or most influential battle of the First World War. What are you actually trying to claim?
Kampfer1445 2 years ago
None of the points that you have put forward qualify the battle as the largest or most important. The number of casualties incurred at the Somme was far higher in an equally small area than those at Verdun on both sides, and the Somme was the battle which had a greater long term effect in that the quality of German infantry was permanently reduced. Third Aisne came much closer to defeating France than Verdun. Verdun was not a decisive battle, it had no war-altering outcome.
Kampfer1445 2 years ago
Well kampfer you miss the point. The somme was indeed larger. But the main brutal fights found place on an area of less than 10 square miles. Please read more about the battle of verdun. And you will find out that verdun was actually very decisive. IF the germans would break the lines. the road to paris would be open. And at that time the engish would be too late to launch an attack at the somme.
bekhouwe8888 2 years ago
Reference my other comments.
Kampfer1445 2 years ago
Verdun would have been a decisive German victory. The same can not automatically be said in reverse in the event of a French victory. Verdun failed to result in any war-changing situation, saved that French attrition in 1916 drove the Army to mutiny in 1917, and let it incapable of assuming offensive operations for a year after that. The Battle of Verdun was not more likely to see French defeat than the Marne or the Third Aisne.
