  • Does anybody do a better job of lovingly coaxing out the best crunch from an electric guitar and amp? This is great.

  • Why did Neil Young choose to eject this fantastic track off Ragged Glory? He should have put it instead of Farmer John!

  • always good to make sure she aint rolled in shit

  • I used to have a bumper sticker that said more barn on it

  • man, you can really smell the horse on this one! turn the sound WAY up @ 7:25 - you hear Neil "that was a cool one...you hear the horse cloppin' away at the end? he just went cloppin' right on out". priceless. if anyone wants to jam the chords: G/C/G+ G/C/F/G

  • @MusicForAllBiz Amazing isn't it how he has done so much with just 3 or 4 chords?

  • "make sure she,s not rolled in shit" true

    regards

    jimmy

  • remember, if you wanna pet that old hound dog make sure he didn't roll in shit.

  • I like this. it's funny. it just mosies along and has random thoughts. it feels like it might fall apart at any moment but it holds together just fine.

  • Awesome and vintage Neil Young. No one does it better.

  • Here is a link to the creation of Neil's sound....

    thrasherswheatDOTorg/sound.htm

  • lmfao, MORE BARN!!!

  • Awesome song.. Got the live version from Wolf Mountain 1997 online, so you might wanna check out my videos ;)

  • This great song should have been on Ragged Glory (1990) instead of Farmer John!

  • Got to love it...remember Don't spook the horse

  • That horse just went cloppin' right out at the end!

  • from what it says in the Neil Bio "shakey" Neil stood in a pile of horse shit while recording this song. NEIL IS GOD!!!!HAPPY BIRTHDAY NEIL

  • CRAZY HORSE! BEST BAND, NEIL THE BEST!

  • Beautiful image at 3:00...that's taken from inside the 'barn' where Ragged Glory was recorded

  • I remember reading in a Neil interview, in his inimitable fashion he said that this song is for the critics, so they can hear everything in the Ragged Glory album they would hate all in one song, and thus save a lot of time ....

  • baby dont spook the horse

  • vintage stuff////////

  • I do enjoy this post. I heard rumblings about 4 new US album releases from Shakey by this Xmas time, December. TRANS on cd in the US? Or another ARCHIVES possibility for a few years...Anyone know where to locate Trans on CD in the US right now?

  • Pancho as per usual, kept back. Great stuff. Now onto 'Music Arcade'.

  • What Ron...you used to not be Neil's age.

But I agree. but I will geet to see him at New Orleans jazz Fest.

  • 2009 and great stuff like this dribbles out. For gawds sake Neil, you're my age now, you won't be here a lot longer, do us a favour and put out what you've got tucked away. Tremendous find this .. thankyou.

  • Believe was recorded for Ragged Glory album, but, unexplainably, didn't make the cut.

  • I shoulda guessed that you were a musician or something when I saw all the great music in your Favs box(like Pixies & Lucinda). As for enigineers not getting Briggs, I think it's cuz David lived life the way u have to, in the now. Most people can't do this. He recorded the way he lived. He wanted realness and passion uncut. Warts and all. Nuthin against fine production values like Pink Floyd, ELO, Def Lep, etc. After a while, it's all bullshit if there's no heart and/or soul. Sorry 4 da rant.

  • Well said.

  • Long live Crazy Horse. Freedom was huge, but Ragged Glory was better. A real Neil album produced by Briggs. This shoulda made the cut. No tellin what kinda treasures Neil's got in his Archives.

  • No shit, huh? long Live Neil and Briggs (such a madman!)

  • Briggs was one of the greatest producers ever. He's right up there with Glyn Johns, Phil Spector, Phil Ramone, Sly Stone, and Jack Nitzsche in my book.

  • Yes he was.

  • It's amazing how big he makes everything sound, as big as the outdoors, like he's captured the air, but it's still sooooo HUGE yet everything sounds so distinct. Always tried to get this sound in the studio. Never could get it. Couldn't quite explain it to the engineers, I guess. Once I handed a producer a copy of Ragged Glory. He looked at me like I handed him a steaming crap. I shoulda walked out then.

  • Its whatever is in Neil's red stomp box - Instantly recognizable tone.

  • I know. I have been wondering what he uses for a long time. So recognizable. Not that i would want to copy it, but still. No one else can produce that sound, it seems. What an amazing musician.

  • Actually, not to be surprising here and all, but Neil Young actually doesn't really use any distortion effects. It's all in his amplifiers. He uses alot of other effects but he never uses distortion effects, just mainly a little weird fender champ that has his special sound. With the right guitar and the right hands, of course.

  • @rcknbkr403 Just turn the volume up, on absolutely everything. pretty much, I dunno lol, but it's fucking cool, I don't think there's a better sound than Neil and Crazy Horse. And I think Neil try's to make guitar sound like "nature" rather than making it "talk", like the "horse cloppin' away" at the end lol.

  • Hard To Find!

  • Ragged Glory one of my favorite records ever, but this would've been a great addition.

  • I have this single!

Ragged Glory kicks ass, but as far as I'm concerned, "Don't Spook The Horse" should have been on that album instead of that awful "Farmer John" cover. But that's just me.

  • Farmer John is an OK cover, but it's basically the only track on Ragged Glory that doesn't "do it" for me.

  • Thank you very many!!! Really been waiting to hear this rare song.

  • Thank you for this great post! Cool pictures too!
