Still, I rate Zhang Ziyi higher than Tang Wei because she is so incomparable and unique.

But for me, my favorite actresses are:

1.) Zhang Ziyi,

2.) Tang Wei,

3.) Gong Li, and

4.) Michelle Yeoh, who was born in Hong Kong, but is currently from Malaysia.

I am a white American, and grew up in California, near Hollywood, yet nowadays my favorite actresses are all Chinese. And it is not just because of their beauty...each one of these ladies can act with just their eyes alone!!

Yes, I speak a little of 6 Asian languages, Mandarin, Thai, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Cantonese, and some Lao and Vietnamese. Nearly all are tonal, and there is almost NO similarity among any of them.

My strongest are Thai and Mandarin, and Mandarin's syntax is most like English. I am currently brushing up on it since I will be in Beijing for the Olympics. I'll watch Chinese Movies and try not to rely on the English subtitles.

But all 4 actresses I mentioned below can speak good English!

I don't think I'll ever be good at Cantonese, but Mandarin seems easy for me. So many Chinese I meet can speak one or the other, but not BOTH. You are amazing to be a white person who can speak both!

I was in HK 5 months ago and stayed at the Panda Hotel in Kowloon (31st floor!) Very few people speak English there anymore...mostly Cantonese, so if I needed directions, I'd say something like..."Chiang mun shu jeh. Ne sic mm sic tang ying mun, uh?", if it was a young woman I was addressing.

Well, that's not true. Many Chinese people can speak two dialects, one being Mandarin and one being their native tongue. I know plenty of people who speak both Cantonese and Mandarin, even though there is always one dialect in which they are more proficient. In fact, it is generally relatively easy for speakers of one Chinese dialect to learn another dialect.
