He gave the 7/4/1900 date all of his life, partially because he, himself, was never sure, and partially because it was an easy date to remember. Most of his contemporaries (Trummy Young, for one) were always convinced that he was born a year or two EARLIER than he claimed, say 1898 or 99.

Whatever, he was a brilliant musician and singer, influenced so many other people.
The 'savings' advert that follows is hosted by a famous comedian, Jack Benny, whose act centred on him being tight-fisted and mean with money.
