It's amazing that, after 5 years, this hasn't been resolved (& I'm not quite sure why a largely correct answer was flagged as spam), but the answer appears 2B (2 paraphrase Faye Dunaway in "Chinatown"): it's "Sentimental Lady" AND "I Didn't Know About You." SL was indeed the initial title of Ellington's vehicle 4 Hodges; the name change was necessitated by the lyrics added by Bob Russell a year or two later. (Source: Wiki, confirmed by ASCAP ACE Title Search)
@dvdspd21 Thx for revealing the mystery. I know it as 'I Didn't Know about You', but just couldn't bring it to mind. Didn't realise it had a different title before words were added. Yes, it did take a long while to resolve!
My pleasure. BTW, speaking of great CF piano performances w/ attendant mysteries, u might want 2 check out the vid I recently uploaded 4 his take on "Someday My Prince Will Come," from a CD burned from unidentified analog sources (i.e. a cassette mix culled from various undocumented LPs BITD, including that now-forgotten album I'd borrowed from the NYPL, which housed this particular track). My best guess is mid-60's to early 70's, but, even shrouded in mystery, it's magnificent.
@dvdspd21 Very interesting and good to know that you have posted this rarity for posterity. I should have mentioned in my earlier 'Thx' post that the last line of 'I didn't know about You' has different and more notes from SL, no doubt to cater for the words added later. So he actually was playing SL as he said.
Indeed it's not surprising that he should. Clare was a connoisseur of fine lyrics; he appreciated the best, but made a point, in particular, of bemoaning the pedestrian lyrics generally tacked onto Ellington's work. OMG! It just occurred 2 me as I'm speaking here in the past tense that u may not yet have gotten the horrible news. I'm so sorry 2 be the one 2 tell u, but Clare died yesterday, of complications stemming from a heart attack suffered two weeks earlier.
For anyone who plays piano you know what an incredible talent this guy has!!! He did a piece ( I can't recall the name ) on a Charmichael recording that was so complex musically that it's indescribeable. I went to a seminar where he was in the 70s and thought he was gone. I'm thrilled to see he and his talents are still here. Amazing.
Sadly many of his recordings are left to we who collect them, since the catalog is very incomplete out there. I love this guys artistic skills and his marvelous arranging. Thank you so much for sharing this gem.
Marvelous musician and composer! He burst on the jazz scene with the recording "First Time Out:" in the 1960's and never looked back. Check out his big band recording "Thesaurus" with Warne Marsh playing solo on "Miles Behind". Yes, he's probably referring to Johnny Hodges' famous solo. A jazz institiution.
What alto saxophone of Ellingtons? Rabbit (J. Hodges)? Last time I heard, saw, and met Mr. Fischer was at Shelly's Manne Hole in 1963, where he was playing once a week. Everyone wanted to play with him; that night it was Lee Konitz, and it was one of the best nights of jazz I've heard in my life.
I had the incredible pleasure to be at Typhoon Restaurant (Santa Monica) last night - and he, his son, and their 30 piece big band ROCKED! What a TREAT! And, Clare was there, so proud!!!
Clare is unique. His harmonies are sublime, perhaps understad by very few people. He is at the top of a pyramid of talent. I wish him a long life and hope we will be able to enjoy his cluster chords for many years to come.
I don't know him or have ever met him, never been to his house or know his grandaughter's, brother's, sister's dog, never used the urinal after him but I have done one thing you posers refuse to mention, I've played his music and that was enough for me to know he's the real deal..ease up with the I know this guy and that guy, I met Vince Neil once,...well I saw him. He is the one they call doctor feel good.
see how cheesey that sounds, commence with the thumbs down votes
I thought (until I did some digging) that "she" was a phenomenal arranger ("Clare", you see! Duh on my part for assuming!) I was so taken by the string arrangement on a song called "You Push Me Away" on the album "DESTINY" by, of ALL people, The JACKSONS!!! I read the liner notes. Guess what? String arrangement: CLARE FISCHER! It's a ststely, sweeping thing of beauty!
I was honored to meet Clare and his wife Donna, as well as his son Brent and wife at the Vibrato Grill in Los Angeles in late November 2007 for the "Clare Fischer Big Band." The band featured Clare, with Brent conducting, and such notables as Gary Foster, Don Shelton, Gene Cipriano, Steve Hufstetter, and Ron Stout...What a great venue!! Just off Mulholland. Bill Dobbins has said that Clare is the most significant jazz composer since Duke Ellington...what a genius--and gentleman!
Clare was my teacher at Dick Grove's School and my mentor. I had the privilege to be invited at his home where we shared some good Brazilian music. I hope to see you soon again Clare.
This dude is so AWE-Inspiring. I grew up listening to his masterpieces on Prince's 80's records, then got hip later to his piano playing. I wish I could borrow his genius for like 10 minutes.
When was this video made? Where? What was this tune? Clare is one hell of a jazz musician, but this video does not give even a glimpse of what he can do.
Clare é muito Brasileiro , mucho Latino, and to much American...Clare is the ONE... Obrigado ,Gracias, and Thanks for ever...decades of the best harmony !!
Claire Fischer has only one parallel: The Genius BILL EVANS and HERMETO PASCOAL to know how to conduct the voices on the piano. He´s one of my heroes.
Bach was not appreciated until 100 after he left his body. Undoubtedly, someday there will be a wider appreciation for [Clare] Fischer's clarity. 'Jazz' as a whole has not caught up with him yet. He owes a lot to Jazz (especially Ellington), but Jazz owes a lot to him as well. He has blazed some important trails.
R.I.P. Clare.
