It was originally going to be "The Tennessee Three" until they added a steel player. Then it was "Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Three" until Red Kernodle (their steel guitar player) left the band in 1954. Then it was "Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Two" until 1960 when they got a drummer, then it was "The Tennessee Three" again.

That's a good point, it did appear on all his records in the fifties, but then he didn't stick with the same band all the time, so it was easier to not mention them at all. Lots of deaths/people leaving/coming back into the band made it impractical; the only one who stayed there all the time was Mr. Cash himself.
