I got one of these with my Super Convertible 25 years ago and have never tried it. The guy I bought it from (my uncle) said it scared him, so he never used it. Now that I see how it works, I may give it a try. Definitely not a time to wear loose clothing. I would have the guy holding it down with his foot have a hand on the kill switch.
it seems like this thing would work a little easier if it was used like a drill press. if you put the whole thing on some sort of swivel where you lay the wood down on a channeled table and then rotate the devise downward onto the piece of wood, using the weight of the device to drill in, instead of your own strength.
This thing looks like something that Quentin Tarantino would make a movie out of. I'd never use this thing. Not in a million years. Just get a splitting maul with a fiberglass handle. You'll live longer.
Looks safer than the ones that attach to a jacked up car or truck wheel but still looks dangerous. Imagine getting caught in that thing! Totally cool though!
@protectoroffaith the idea is grand, but it is still lacking development. Using it now as if it were ready for production, shows neglect for safety. This is 2011, that ship won't sail. I don't know how long people have actually been using the different versions of this, maybe 40 or more years, and you still don't see it in stores. Why does another person come along and try to run with this idea and totally ignore the obvious dangers? It makes me want to slap some sence into them, but how do you?

yes looks very dangerous. i like the idea of a foot controlled kill switch and mabey a pipe added from the 4 bolts on the gear box sloping down to meet the other pipe so the split log rolls back away from the screw. the way it looks now, after the log splits you have to bend over the screw and reach to get it.
I like your splitter, but you are putting yourself at risk a little. I would hate to see that log slip off that point and you lose your balance. Since you have the foot there, fix you something to sit the end of the log on where its vertical, you can always lay the log up to the point and hit it with a deadblow hammer to get it started. Just a suggestion, dont want to see you get hurt. I do like it though, would love to have one of em.
Would save the tip if 1/2 inch hold was pre drilled with cordless drill 1/2 inch deep into outside bark of each log. Didn't noticd feeding the split side of the log.
Would have a foot controlled kill switch handy. Looks dangerous.
No, it is the same drive that is used for both the rotary plow and cultivator. This set up is the original Thackery design, as illustrated in his patent.
Any machinist should be able to turn the unicorn on a lathe to get it sharp again, or you could have the machinist cut the tip off the unicorn so its replaceable, and have a couple of extra tips made up of carbon steel.

Quite likely the most dangerous machine I have ever seen -
it help out a bit you may want to cut the tip off and put a step drill on that thing to cut down on how hard you have to push to get things started.

That's a lot of human work for a log splitter. Also a good way to kill yourself.

I've been looking high and low for the Thackery Unicorn G-2. Any one know of an available one?

it can be sharpened with a round chainsaw file

I noticed the drive for the unicorn, is it the drive unit from a snow blower?

Actually, the tip is removable. Yes, it would be great if I can get a few extra new tips made for it.
