I got a Torx screwdriver at Lowes for very cheap. What I'm looking for is the metal case that goes on the outside. Anyone have any idea where I can get one?
I followed the video step by step and when i install the copied drive into my macbook i get a flashing folder with a question mark. I have tried re doing everything a second time and get the same results. The weird thing is when i try booting the hard drive from the external enclosure it works fine the problem is only once i install it into the computer. Any ideas?
What brand and type of hdd did u put in your mac. Most hard drives ive looked up have the bare disc facing on one side. Is that the right one? Whats the best brand to use? thanks :)
My macbook is all out of memory. Is there a slot for more? Or do I need to transfer everything to a separate device, add more memory then put it back on?
Hey, thank you for this video. My hard drive crashed recently but fortunately I ran timemachine about a month prior. Any recommendations as to how I might retrieve the data that isn't backed up in my external?

Macbooks take 2.5" drives, I think up to 7,200rpm. The latest ones (at least 2007 onwards) use SATA drives. There is a lot of documentation about this on the net.
how was it over use of brackets and screws. There were 3 screws and one bracket and the hard drive comes out. Typical PC user too retarded to notice anything
Thank you so much for this video. I fried our hard drive and the warranty was out and we didn't have the Care Plan, so I had to go it on my own. Your vid saved the day!!
Great video. My Macbook is quickly running out of memory and I am thinking of getting a new hard drive. I found one from ebay that is 500GB from china. Its only £75 so i think i will buy it. Do you think it will work and be good? And once you change your hard drive, how do you get all of your files and music and everything to your new hard drive?
The easiest way to transfer files is to turn your existing hard drive into an external drive via an enclosure. You may then use the time machine software to restore your system from the external drive.
Amazon are selling Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500gb hard drives for £58. Get a hard drive caddy (ebay, amazon, ebuyer etc), insert your old hard drive into it and then you've got a portable hard drive with all your data on it that you can transfer across. You should always have a backup of your data though...
The type of drive you would need is a 2.5" SATA hard drive. Western Digital, Seagate, Samsung, and Toshiba all make very reliable drives and they would all fit into your macbook.
Then you would contact apple care and or the manufacture of the drive for tech support and possibly a replacement drive. The drive should be able to be recognized even in its raw, unformatted state.
cheers man. The apple store wanted to charge 150 in labour to do that! Gonna attempt it myself now! can anyone recommends a 250GB hard drive for the black macbook?
NO, not exactly, you WILL have to reinstall all your software including the OS onto the new hard drive, but the original information will STILL be on the ORIGINAL harddrive.
The connection for a SSD would be identical so you should be able to swap in a 2.5" drive into the macbook. I would caution that SSD can be problematic with some software. I would contact Apple to see if there is any compatibility issues with the OS.
Time Machine backups are stored on either an external hard drive like the time capsule or on the same hard drive that is currently in use. You can get an enclosure to turn an internal hard drive into an external hard drive. This will allow you to restore to the new hard drive.
Hey excellent vid. Changed out my RAM and my HDDbut ran into a small problem. The black rubber pieces that line the inside of the drive bay got dislodged during the install. I tried to place them back but that was extremely frustrating and was not successful.
My question is do I need them anyway? And if I do any suggestions how to get them on? Can I glue them to the hdd case and then slide it in or glue them to the bay and then reinstall drive?
Yes we do OEM drives and this the MacBook Pro will take them. They are all basically the same. Just unplug the old drive, take off the adaptor, put the adaptor on the new drive, plug it in to the computer. You may want to Clone the new drive so you can have your OS and files on the new drive. We have an E-Z Hard drive upgrade kit as well. You can clone your new drive in about an hour or 2. Much quicker that the other way. Hope this helps.
You guys don't do MacBook Pro's, do you? If not, then can you point me in the direction of where I can get a HDD or a tutorial on how to do it? 250 gigs isn't enough ;0
If you have the Apple part number for your computer, it will be easier for us to make sure we have the correct cross reference. There are only 2 types of hard drives (SATA and IDE). So, there is a 50/50 chance of being right if you can't get the part #.
Hi, I have a nvidia white macbook and I want to upgrade the HD to a 320gb 7200rpm one. Which one u recommend? Will I se noticeable improvements in performance? What about temperature and batttery? thx!
In order to make the best recommendation for a hard drive, we would need to know the specific model. Remember that the hard drive is where everything is permanently stored such as your operating system, programs, and files. Memory (RAM) is what transfers information back & forth between your processor & your hard drive. So getting a larger hard drive will let you store more stuff. Getting more memory, or RAM will speed up your computer. Hope this helps!
so, if I were to buy a "Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - OEM" hard drive, this would work fine in my macbook? Also, if I have backed up my computer via time machine, can I install all of this on my new hard drive simply? Thanks for this helpful video.
If your specific Macbook takes a SATA HDD, then you shouldn't have a problem, but it is always best to check the specifications on your particular model. The 'Time Machine' feature should simply allow you to install everything on the new HDD, but we would recommend contacting Apple with questions in regards to the program abilities. Hope this helps!
Western Digital drives are great products. In terms of the GB size, we recommend not going more than 4x the original drive (i.e. 80GBx4=320GB). If you have an 80GB drive or above to start with, then you will be fine with this size drive. Also ensure that your model takes a SATA drive and not an IDE. Hope this helps!
Well, I would be using it in the newest, lower-end $1300 MacBook, which I haven't purchased yet. Just trying to think ahead. So with these specs, would that model of MacBook work well with this HDD?
Without the specs on the MacBook, we wouldn't be able to indentify if this HDD is correct for it. The two suggestions of size and type apply to any model, so you just want to make sure the specific MacBook takes a SATA drive and 320 is not more than 4x the original amount. Best of luck with the new computer!
Hey, if i have a 120 giga bite hard drive in my macbook, can i get a 250 GIGA BITE hard drive and replace my 120 giga bite hard drive for my 250 giga bite hard drive????
In most systems you can simply just double the hard drive space. If you have any doubts then you may want to check with Apple on your specific systems capabilities. Hope this helps!
When installing a new hard drive that is OEM, you will have to reinstall the operating system and any other programs you had previously. You will want to locate the system manufacture and OS disk in order to reinstall. Hope this helps!
In most laptops you can install an external drive. Typically you will need an external hard drive enclosure, USB adapter, and also need to change the jumper settings on the new drive. It is always good to check with the manufacture as to what the system can handle and the requirements. Hope this helps!
The size and type of hard drive that will be compatible is going to depend on the specific model of computer you have. I would check what the manufacture specifications are for replacing a hard drive in your model. You can also look up your model on our site as well for more information. Hope this helps!
You must use a hard drive that is compatible to your specific model. If you are unsure as to what type of hard drive you need, you can search for you model on out website to see compatible hard drives. Hope this helps!
Typically a good rule to follow is that most models can take double the size of the original hard drive. You can also search for your specific model on our website to see all compatible drives because it can vary depending on the computer. Hope this helps!
i just installed a 500gb at 3gs and 7200rpm and it is working perfect. 500gb is the biggest 2.5sata II right now. and dont worry about heat when you get into higher rpms or less power life. in real world test it has been unnoticeable or no change at all. from my experience, i have noticed longer life which i think it has to do with the fact it gets its info faster. good luck
Oh and didnt get around to reading all the user comments but got the screw drivers needed from my local Sears. Yeah Sears go figure but they had what I needed so booyah!
I had two Apple factory hard drvies for my Mac start to fail to mount, so I decided to replace it with a Western Digital. The box says they are compatible, but I can't get it to properly "snap" into place..Any ideas?
Great video, very informative. Now, who is the music playing in the background? Guitar part goes WHOOOO, TWIRLY TWIRLY WHOOO, TWIRLY TWIRLY DIDDLE DIDDLE WHA WHA!
does it matter if I get a 7,200RPM instead of a 5,400RPM? will it not work or work fine but just drop my battery life?...and can I use any laptop hardrive, or are their special mac drives?
This is an operation u can do _without_ breaking the warranty. same with the ram:) the thing is that you get no warranty on the NEW drive you install. and if the new drive in any way manages to damage other things in the casing the warranty is broken i assume
thanks for the video, it helped out a ton! if i put in the new hard drive, i know there will be nothing on it, do i insert the OS X disc and install the operating system, or will there be a screen to ask for it?
Sometimes you can get a really small flathead that can work, but I recommend going to your local hobby shop or hardware store and ask for the T8. Hope that helps!
Yes, you will need to reinstall the OS on the new hard drive. After you're finished installing the new drive in your MacBook, boot up with the Mac OSX disc in the drive so you can install.
Generally Apple ships the install discs with your computer. Just insert the disc into your CD-Rom upon start-up, and it will gude you through the install.
I bought a SATA case from the mac store (about $39), put the new drive in it and used the firewire cable to connect it- then I used Carbon Copy Cloner (free, Super Duper is another option) to clone my old internal drive onto the new one. Then I put the new drive in and I can use the old in the case I bought for a little extra storage! (this was unofficially recommended by a mac store rep) or it's $90 at the mac store to have your new drive put in and all the stuff transferred.

I removed my hdd because I needed to send it to repair. Battery, topcase, screen was broken. All flaws with the Apple product. When i tried to insert the drive, a piece of rubber thats glued with three drops to the case loosened and got stuck in there. I'm very disappointed with the poor quality of the Mac.
What I did was buy a 2.5 SATA hard drive enclosure and put the old drive in it. Then when you install Mac OSX on the new drive, hook up the old drive in the enclosure as an external hard drive and move it over there.
hi there, i bought a sata hard drive, put my old hard drive in it, is there any other way to access my files other than the way you stated. I tried using it like an external drive but it keeps telling me to initialize then earsing is the only option. thanks :)
i was wondering if you have to use the install disk that came with your macbook or can you use another Mac OSX tiger version 10.4? i cant find the disk that it came with =(
Thank you thank you thank you!
So easy!
I was a bit nervous to do it ..., but the video is clear and simple

Well, I would be using it in the newest, lower-end $1300 MacBook, which I haven't purchased yet. Just trying to think ahead. So with these specs, would that model of MacBook work well with this HDD?
Thanks again for the insight.
P0mt3 2 years ago
Without the specs on the MacBook, we wouldn't be able to indentify if this HDD is correct for it. The two suggestions of size and type apply to any model, so you just want to make sure the specific MacBook takes a SATA drive and 320 is not more than 4x the original amount. Best of luck with the new computer!

Hey, if i have a 120 giga bite hard drive in my macbook, can i get a 250 GIGA BITE hard drive and replace my 120 giga bite hard drive for my 250 giga bite hard drive????
geekguy11 2 years ago
In most systems you can simply just double the hard drive space. If you have any doubts then you may want to check with Apple on your specific systems capabilities. Hope this helps!

When installing a new hard drive that is OEM, you will have to reinstall the operating system and any other programs you had previously. You will want to locate the system manufacture and OS disk in order to reinstall. Hope this helps!
4allmemorydotcom 2 years ago
so when the new one is installed... how do you install leopard back?
Xertazer 2 years ago
You can also purchase a hard drive cloning device. We have them on our site. Feel free to call us if you need help.
4allmemorydotcom 2 years ago
In most laptops you can install an external drive. Typically you will need an external hard drive enclosure, USB adapter, and also need to change the jumper settings on the new drive. It is always good to check with the manufacture as to what the system can handle and the requirements. Hope this helps!
4allmemorydotcom 2 years ago
can i use the old one like an external drive with some kind of cable or something?

Can I use any SATA 2.5" 5400rpm hdd? Does it support more than 320gb?
tsnaruto 2 years ago
The size and type of hard drive that will be compatible is going to depend on the specific model of computer you have. I would check what the manufacture specifications are for replacing a hard drive in your model. You can also look up your model on our site as well for more information. Hope this helps!

mikee8100 2 years ago
You must use a hard drive that is compatible to your specific model. If you are unsure as to what type of hard drive you need, you can search for you model on out website to see compatible hard drives. Hope this helps!

Whats the largest HD you can install in the Macbook? and how do you find out ? Cheers!
FirebrandNIRE 3 years ago
Typically a good rule to follow is that most models can take double the size of the original hard drive. You can also search for your specific model on our website to see all compatible drives because it can vary depending on the computer. Hope this helps!

Cheers guys!

i just installed a 500gb at 3gs and 7200rpm and it is working perfect. 500gb is the biggest 2.5sata II right now. and dont worry about heat when you get into higher rpms or less power life. in real world test it has been unnoticeable or no change at all. from my experience, i have noticed longer life which i think it has to do with the fact it gets its info faster. good luck

You might need to purchase an additonal cage mount or the original mount might be bad. We really wouldn't be able to fully assist without seeing it.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
I had two Apple factory hard drvies for my Mac start to fail to mount, so I decided to replace it with a Western Digital. The box says they are compatible, but I can't get it to properly "snap" into place..Any ideas?

the apple store wont install stuff that isn't theirs, don't even bother asking them. that's why no one can answer your question joeotley

does it matter if I get a 7,200RPM instead of a 5,400RPM? will it not work or work fine but just drop my battery life?...and can I use any laptop hardrive, or are their special mac drives?
great vid, thanks.
fitosophy 3 years ago
It doesn't matter, but the 7200rpm HD is faster.
I'd say look at the hardrives on Crucial or Macsales.
Xephyron 3 years ago
Will Apple store do this for me for free? I'm still under warranty but this is an optional upgrade so do I have to pay?
joeotley 3 years ago
This is an operation u can do _without_ breaking the warranty. same with the ram:) the thing is that you get no warranty on the NEW drive you install. and if the new drive in any way manages to damage other things in the casing the warranty is broken i assume
vattmaffi 3 years ago
Yeah I know that, I was just asking how much it would cost for Apple store to install the hard drive. You didn't read my question properly

You just saved me $250.
Awesome, thanks.

You will need to install whatever OS you want to use on the new drive. There should be prompts that will help you through it. Hope this helps!
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
thanks for the video, it helped out a ton! if i put in the new hard drive, i know there will be nothing on it, do i insert the OS X disc and install the operating system, or will there be a screen to ask for it?

what the hell is a torx t8? is that some sort of allen key of something?
goldengoat55555 3 years ago
It's a specialty screwdriver that has a star-shaped tip. You should be able to find one at a hardware store or a hobby shop. Hope that helps!

i just bought a new hard drive, but i didnt know i needed a T8 to install it...TT
Do you know of any alternative to a T8??
danny8k 3 years ago
Sometimes you can get a really small flathead that can work, but I recommend going to your local hobby shop or hardware store and ask for the T8. Hope that helps!

but if you get a new hard drive, wont all your files be gone?
kidtaouk 3 years ago
Yes, but you can get help transferring all your files from the old hard drive to the new hard drive.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
How about the OS? isnt the OS installed in the hard drive also?
j0vencio 3 years ago
Yes, you will need to reinstall the OS on the new hard drive. After you're finished installing the new drive in your MacBook, boot up with the Mac OSX disc in the drive so you can install.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
the apple store?
dxsmth 3 years ago
Generally Apple ships the install discs with your computer. Just insert the disc into your CD-Rom upon start-up, and it will gude you through the install.

How do you copy all of the data from the old hdd to the new one?

PSPSlimLover 3 years ago

I'm very disappointed with the poor quality of the Mac.

how do u transfer all the data from one hard drive to the other
goshwil1 3 years ago
What I did was buy a 2.5 SATA hard drive enclosure and put the old drive in it. Then when you install Mac OSX on the new drive, hook up the old drive in the enclosure as an external hard drive and move it over there.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
Oh thanks, I might try that.
goshwil1 3 years ago
hi there, i bought a sata hard drive, put my old hard drive in it, is there any other way to access my files other than the way you stated. I tried using it like an external drive but it keeps telling me to initialize then earsing is the only option. thanks :)
stickhrk 3 years ago
I'm not sure quite what you mean. You bought a new drive and you installed it, is that correct? Did you put your old drive in an external enclosure?

Is it hard to find a Torx T8 screwdriver?
Emcnelis 3 years ago
It definitely can be, but you can generally find them at home supply stores or a hobby shop. Hope that helps!
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
Thanks. It's just that I have a Hitachi hard drive and I need to find a Torx T8 to install it onto my MacBook.
Emcnelis 3 years ago
wow ty dude i tho it was hard to do that... :D

Does that void your warranty?
patrick9068 3 years ago
Apple has made this a consumer upgradeable part, so it won't void your warranty.

i was wondering if you have to use the install disk that came with your macbook or can you use another Mac OSX tiger version 10.4? i cant find the disk that it came with =(
daa12yl 3 years ago
You can use any disc of the same version of OS X that your computer came with. Have fun!
