  • Tough.

  • The ex drummer of this band now plays in KOLONY with me. We're recording our first album right now, take a look at our "pre-production" on reverbnation(.com/kolony)

  • Not my thing, got referred to this off of a SGM vid. I like the Museum better, more chill.

  • Wow, this band has something for everyone, it leaves no stone unturned

  • 3:11 = Pure heavy badass shit !

  • @ilikeguitars565 do you know what the fuck youre on about? im pretty sure that a 9 string bass is a more challenging instrument than a 4 string.

  • @ilikeguitars565 bury your dead is utter shit you "stupid fucking moron". how hard is it to write a one note riff over a 4/4 beat? exactly. and eminem? thats a fucking joke. and if you dont like this song, then get the fuck off and stop filling up the page with your bullshit.

  • @ilikeguitars565 you said in another comment that i'm obviously immature. prove that one boy ;)

  • wow look at that bassguitar :o

  • @stupidman337 To bad he plays it like a baboon :P

Check out Yves Carbone or Jean Baudin for an idea how it can be played too!

  • i dont get it :( saw them at prog nation in glasgow and they were good but i just dont understand it :/

  • @ilikeguitars565 and it says on your channel that you listen to preety much anything, so why dont you grow up and respect what other people listen to, know one takes the piss out of you, you stupid emo pussy

  • @ilikeguitars565 anyway ur the one going on the internet taking the piss out of people, not me. so your the one which wont say it to anyones face.

  • @ilikeguitars565 oh yeah. i forgot, having an opinion is immature isn't it, epsecially when you listen to bloody eminem and dj toxic whatever the fuck that is. and i dont give a shit that you havent comment on this for a year, you still did leave comments on it. and why would i not say it to your face, i dont know if your the beefist, tallest guy in the world, or the shortest fat kid in the world, so you dont know if i would say it to your face or not.

  • @ilikeguitars565 im 15 and im more mature than you. grow the fuck up you stupid dick!

  • hot

  • Unexpect give hope to experimental death.

  • well, their sound in frankfurt was really great and they were better then dream theater/opeth/bigelf!

  • lol best of four bands i oughta kick the shit out of you for saying that the best of those four were the faceless and NIle you say different fuck u poser mother fucker.

  • They were the best of the four bands.

  • Oh yeah? Your mama liked them!

  • Seriously, "Your mom" jokes? You can't be 27. You're 9

  • But then again I wasn't the one who went straight from musical differences to calling me a retard. Anyway, it wasn't a joke. She told me this when we were in bed together.

  • I'm just going to stop it right here. If you're still going on with the 9 year old shit, I'm not even going to bother. Get a sense of humor, and start listening to some actual music.

  • Good idea. This is a bit childish. I will still have to insist that calling people retards because they like music you don't is not the way to behave. And I still mean what I said (not the thing about your mother). I came to see Opeth and Dream Theater, but Unexpect completely blew me away with their music and performance, and nothing that happened later that evening came close.

  • @PjokkPjokk o come on u thought they were better than opeth? they owned the secc show, DT were good but opeth stole the show

  • thanks a lot ilikeguitars565

    That was a fun read.

  • theres prog and then theres a mess, this is the latter.

  • you should try the studio version ... much clearer

  • This whole album is amazing

  • noise which fits into scales and structures. It's called music.

  • Wow, absolutely phenomenal live performance.

  • Why people can't enjoy their fav bands without saying that others are shit? I don't understand. This is not my fav band, they are too crazy for me, but i respect their work and they are very good performers. She has an amazing voice!!

  • 3:11 onwards is AMAZING!!

  • +tim burton!

  • - all of them...unexpect are unique lol

  • not likely.

unexpect released their first record years before sikth released theirs

  • you = fail

  • I have tickets with these guys dream theater bigelf and opeth (Y) =)

  • me too! in Norway, land of metal , hehe

  • me too! in norway as well! 26. sept. FTW!!

  • Same :) I only just started listening to these guys but I'm sooo looking forward to it

  • None of that was invented by jazz. Jazz uses dominant 7th chords as main chords because they like the sound, but not they do not use them with nearly the same function as classical music.

You've proven that you're retarded, considering most well mannered people will read your responses probably understand how large of a sheltered ass you are, i have nothing really to say.

Enjoy continuing this if like. I'm sure if you ever mature, you'll probably realize how convoluted you are.

  • Comment removed

  • Also, considering you say you've composed before, maybe you'll get this.

They lay out very intricate chord progressions, their most intense choruses are reminiscent of some of Bach's more complex choral pieces. They use everything you'd see in music, sharped 7th, Neapolitan sixth chords, etc. They also use familiar stylistic things such as episodes, codas, etc. Everything they do is done on purpose.

Just because you don't like it, don't pretend you understand the music behind it.

  • I'd certainly hope there's scales, considering it's the basis of music.

I've done an analysis on the entire album. For example, the main theme behind Chromatic Chimera is a chromatic idea based on the minor scale (fits the name), keeping 4/4 time throughout the song. What's interesting is how the extremely chaotic parts lead into the more melodic themes, which adds a tremendous amount of dimension.

  • hahahaha, I love music.

I used to hate this band 6 months ago. Now I really see why I hated them. But the weird thing is that while my musical tastes have been expanding, I've come to love Unexpect. These guys are really pushing the boundaries. I love it.

  • You're an idiot.

You can look at my other comment if you need an explanation, but this music is sheer brilliance. You can tell me you listen to everything, but I doubt you have a lick of brains when it comes to knowing what goes into composing.

My Music Teacher found a great amount of respect for these guys when I showed him hem. Considering he has 35 years of musical experience spanning four countries under his belt, I'll take his word and not yours.

  • Musical taste is purely subjective. You shouldn't be surprised that some people wouldn't like Unexpect's music, as it is not exactly "easy listening." Crying about people not liking it is also a waste of time.

That being said, I do agree that it is sheer brilliance.

  • Bashing misconceptions of their music, not really focusing on their taste

But i can agree that this isn't as accessible as other music, so good points anyways

  • Hmmm...I decided to check these guys out because of the Europe PN tour and I'm not too fond of their music. Very talented, but it's just too bizarre and random for my tastes. As their names implies, everything they play is unexpected.

  • It's actually not random. It shifts drastically, but it is far from random. it's actually some of the most well laid music that has ever graced my ears.

I've given the album the multiple extensive listens, and there are repeating themes, choruses, pre-choruses, insane build ups, climaxes, episodes, etc.

Their music is as beautiful as it is intricate, a music the romantics would have praised.

  • I understand it's not random, it just seems too spontaneous for my liking. They're not bad though, they can play very well.

  • I seriously hope Progressive Nation comes to Scotland, so we can see them

  • ilikeguitars565 your just getting hammered..haha.. if you think these people donæt know what their doing.. I can't wait to here a song by someone how knows what their doing.. cus this was fucking awesome.. and btw ilikeguitars565, keep your meenings to your self if you don't like it.. because you know their good.. Happy 10th birthday;)

  • Fuck you! If you listen so much music, why do you hate people who like metal music? It is just music!

  • weird music, but special. are they progressive band?

  • think about it!!! NO!! IT'S A FUCKIN BLACK METAL HIPHOP BAND!!!! no... ITS As progressive music that you can hear! Exactly it's avant garde extreme metal... ANyWaY i loVe ITTT!!!!

  • avant garde extreme metal....? ok.... i don't know where u read or heard that.... but i would call them so many other things.... lol... like, maybe... Extreme black alternative prog metal or sumthin.... xD

  • Prog is a loose term, so sure.

  • I like music. Isn't it wonderful?

  • impressive stuff! i like it, ashame her voice isn't quit there at times but than again it is extreme hard to sing in this style of music, well done keep it going.

  • 9 strings bass btw. I still encourage you to study arts to understand that you are wrong. Now go back to your blink 182, kid.

  • ilikeguitars565: Studying since you were 9? So, you're 9½ now?

  • bahaha 9½. pwnt.

  • i knew that kid was immature. it is easy to mention on the internet that you are highly intelligent. hard to prove it, though.

keep studying music then, you still have a lot to learn before being able to put a good judgement on any kind of music.

and for the maturity, i don't know how you could fix that. try being intelligent, it should work.

have fun being angry again, kid.

  • ahaha, n00b

  • I love this Band ! If you don't like it ,Oh well don't listen! It's that simple.

  • says the guy with blink182 videos in his favorites. Study and listen to real music and we'll talk later, kid.

  • Wonderful band

  • c nule a chier criss vote affaire

  • you sir need musical education.

  • this band's the shit!! totally kicks ass!!

  • WOW! Fantastic music, I urgently go and buy their albums, woooow, incredible, I wasnt ever expected extreme metal to ever reach to such a mindblogging creativity. Well, I changed my mind. This is very fine music.

  • I love the synchronised headbanging at the end xD

  • Hmm, I want to see Unexpect live one day after this. They seem to do a very amazing job here, quite chaotic, but this is Unexpect, damnit!

  • People who don't understand technicality = Fail.

  • I've respected Unexpet for pretty long. Too bad they never come here in Finland, although many metal band like to play also here. Well, avantgardism hasn't got too big fanship here..

  • would be great if you dissappeared :)

  • FUKIN AMAZING MALE VOCALS

  • not really. they are pretty standard and well, they suck esspecially much in this particular band. I mean its just mush really. So many odd time signatures like this put together are really a mess. The only good part really is the drummer and the bassist.

  • well, I've saw Unexpect live last month, and I find them awesome. They change the rythm lots of times yeah, and in the begining that annoyed me, mainly when I was getting the feeling of a certain part of the song and sudennly everything changes. but so what? they're avant-garde metal, that's the point, to be unpredictable. and when i got used, I became a fan, it's just a matter of understanding their music.

  • It might sound funny to hear it from me now but I understand EXACTLY what you mean.

Im in the same boat. In the begining I HATED death metal. And I started listening to "I Will Kill You" by Cannibal Corse and I started to like parts of the song and BAM now I have 15 death metal bands and nearly everyone of their albums. haha (:

    I agree with you.

  • haha its true, they honestly sound like shit. I hate so many odd time signatures put together like this.

  • If you notice, they are keeping a constant 8/8 time. They do vary it in transitions but then always go back to a chorus/verse in 8/8.

Try to understand a style of music before you comment about it.

  • Exactly, they always 'go back to 8/8'. and its stupid. They should keep some sort of rythm while they are doing fills and what not. Its not a 'constant' 8/8 either. Otherwise they would have slowed down to what I saw... It would make much more sence for them to just change the signature to 4/4 instead of using 8/8 for a part which is meant to be slow if you understand what I mean.

And thats why it sounds like shit.

Meshuggah and Gojira do start-stop riffs etc. very well though. ;)

  • well if you're closeminded and don't appreciate the true artistic value of musical experimentation...then yeah, they sound like shit.

  • Its called musical experimentation for a reason. Its an experiment. And I just happen to not like this one. Geez. They might have other songs I like but this one isnt one of them.

  • Sorry, im confused as to what your trying to say.

  • I beg to differ.

  • love the violin and the bass and the singing is amazing as well

  • At first I was very "wtf" about this band, esp because I'm a bassist and their bassist has a TEN-STRING BASS 0____o, but after awhile I really started to like it

  • correction : 9 string bass

  • really? huh, I wonder what's the tuning then

  • F# B E A D G C F Bb

Just like a four strings bass, with 2 more lows and 3 more hi's.

  • This is Avant-Garde Metal, like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.Check out Stolen Babies.

  • you ever heard this song ON WEED?

  • listen to them stoned while playing silent hill homecoming. that was the most fucked up night of my life, but goes together well

  • What's with the awful video quality? D:

Is there somewhere to get a better quality version?

  • wow ca lair tres bon live <;D \m/

  • Unexpect are avant garde, experimental, prog metal. Obviously it isn't what the typical Nile tech death metal fans are accustomed to, and it certainly isn't what the fans of cookie cutter acts like Suicide Silence are capable of understanding and/or appreciating. If you dig Primus, Mike Patton, or other "weird" artists, then Unexpect will fit in just fine. If experimental music was never your thing before, that won't change now. But anybody that things they are worse than SS are undeniably wrong

  • i dig suicide silence and appreciate/ understand this shit.

  • Fair enough. It would have been better to say the "average" Suicide Silence fan.

  • Yup. Scene kids probably won't appreciate this shit. a bit of musical knowledge ( i won't say that scene kids don't have this knowledge ) is required to understand the different textures exposed by the band (breaks the average guitar-drum-bass). Suicide Silence is a great band to let off the stress tho, and this is especially good when you want some "unusual" song structure and instrumental/vocal composition.

  • I completely disagree, even though I just heard of this band, it's because I love technical death metal, like Nile, Death and Necrophagist and progressive deathcore, like Between the Buried and Me, that I can actually appreciate and like this band

  • I'm crazy about this band at the moment :)

  • As for comparing them to Slipknot, just let it go. It was originally proposed by a guy with no knowledge of music as it is, so you really can't take anything he says seriously.

And anyone stupid enough to believe him, Unexpect is an entirely different style from Slipknot. Slipknot is Nu-/Alternative Metal, Unexpect is Avant-Garde Metal, they are almost nothing alike.

  • Wow, there are certainly some interesting comments on this video. It's funny how people always get so offended when someone insults something they like. Get over it guys, everyone has their own opinion, and there's no way everyone's gonna like Unexpect. Especially when the quality of this video sucks. If you want to hear a much better version of this song, listen to the album version.

  • insane

  • Holy crap! I love it when they all headbang in unison.

  • Unexpect really grows on you. I hated them at first when I saw them live with Nile, but yeah, they really grow on you. I love these guys now.

  • Very different from most of the stuff I listen to.

  • fucking incredible sound.

  • i find it incredible that they can reproduce such complex music almost perfectly on stage, this was a hell of a performance

  • Alright guys, unless you have the album, and have read the lyrics (from the booklet) and have listened to this album over and over again You will have to agree that IaFA is a pretty superb album. If you just looked them up on youtube and are like "Unexpect?" hmmm... Then why are you here in the first place ranting and raving about nu metal this suck this faggot that...whatever. Just enjoy what you enjoy and whatever...seriously people. If you liked this album check out Sigh's new album Sick!

  • Atleast I will be able to handle this band a little more than Zimmers Hole on the up coming SIGH tour. ZH sucks! The first thing that comes to mind when I hear this is Naked City. Not quite the same sound but has that essence.

  • I also saw them with Nle and Suicide Silence in Ft. Lauderdale. I hated them when I first saw them live, but I actually started to listen to their studio music, and it really grew on me. Now I wouldn't mind seeing them live. The chick looks like she has tourette's live tho, lol.

  • lol, Just kidding about the bad part, I kinda enjoyed them they definatly are origional, but i was serious about only one guy moving durring thier set lol

  • Basically i found out why they are called unexpect.....

If you go to a show and see a war guitar, violin, guitar, drums , keyboard and vocals you are expecting a good show....Well you would be wrong because they were unexpectantly bad......

  • I watched them in st.petersburg when i went to see nile.......over athousand metals heads in the crowd......only 1 guy was moving when they were on......lol most of the violin is recorded and played, he doesnt really do shit....the vocalists has an interesting vioce but looks like she is havin siezures on stage, The War guitar player is pretty good, heavy accent tho.....

  • est-ce que quelqu'un sait approximativement quand le nouvel album est supposé sortir? j'ai vraiment hâte de voir/entendre ce qu'ils vont nous sortir de bon!

  • i serisously dont know why i like this but i realy realy do! random as fuck. but wroks so well.

  • Hmm never liked this band probably never will...

IWABO is where it's at imo.

  • Best band in the universe.

  • Quebecois Tabarnak!

  • All I have to say about this is this: I'm all for Slipknot, I find them perfectly acceptable and I enjoy a lot of their songs.

But Unexpect...Unexpect are hors concours, Unexpect are geniuses. I know a lot of people who couldn't take a step back and analyze this band, and look past whatever is preventing them from accepting it. But most of the time that simply doesn't happen. C'est la vie, as they say.

  • I love Unexpect <3 Vous étiez MALADES a Heavy MTL!

Vous etes des genis musicales! Et Arthagoth est mon IDOL! Continuez a etre malades pendant que j'ecoute ma copie signer par vous de In a Flesh aquarium :)

  • HAHAHA SLIPKNOW AND UNEXPECT

    COMPARED. what a fucking dumbass

all i can do is laugh.

  • absolutely brilliant metal

    and slipknot sucks dick

female voice goes so well with this

  • I'm confused. Why the fuck are Slipknot even being mentioned here? I would never put the two bands together. Unexpect are pushing metal as far as it can go while sliptknot are nu-metal wankers appealing to 14 year old girls with 14 inch thick eyeshadow and bondage clothing who call themselves metal. It's fucking moronic to even mention that dogshit band in the presence of Unexpect.Unexpect are brilliant.

  • awesome:D *****

  • Headbanging with a violin must be quite hard...

  • There are some amusing comments for this video regarding Unexpect and their musical integrity, (which shouldn't be questioned at all in my opinion)... These individuals are all excellent musicians and in concert they are just amazing. They stole the show for me as well at the last Nile show... And I had never even heard of them til that night! Also Leilindel is very inspiring to me as a vocalist... her energy, stage presence and technique are simply incredible.

  • lol discordaxis ... you think SLipknot is better than that?... xD

    you maked me laught =')

  • I certainly do. Music like this sounds to messy to me. I aprciate their playing skill for sure. But by the sounds of this they dont put it to much good use.

  • They aren't just playing randomly like morons. Avant Garde metal is by far the most technical and when you do it right eg, gorguts, unexpect then it produces an amazing sound.

This isn't for people who just want to hear catchy tunes or slow chugging riffs. This tests your musical mind. It's pretty tough understanding all of this. Time changes, different vocalists, Variety of different Emotions abruptly changing.

This band is so tight when they play it's unbeleivable. It's far from messy.

  • VERY fair comment. Yeah, all of what you have said is right. But I cant say this is the music i wanna listen to all the time and i certainly wouldnt call it the best. Personally, good music is just enjoyable to listen to. Id rarther sit back and relax and listen to a nice tune, or Head bang to a heavy "chugging riff". If i want to be tested musically id listen to this, or just take a musical test of some kind :p. I do much prefer a steady rhythem throughout a song. But thats just me! :)

  • the biggest difference between slipknot and Unexpect is that

well...to be honest...slipknot sucks and unexpect doesnt

not to mention that slipknot sucks and unexpect is pretty sick

oh and slipknot sucks and unexpect has talent

and i mightve forgotten that slipknot sucks and unexpect writes technically demanding compositions that while they may not appeal to all listeners, most will admit that theyre complicated and precise requiring much effort on unexpect's part.

    and slipknot sucks

  • Considering how lyrics are the only facet of music that matters you are totally right (sarcasm). I mean who cares about trying different keys or time signatures, or writing something somewhat unique. Is this good music? Well, its well written, technical and original. Whether or not you like it is all personal opinion. I don't understand the comparison between this band and Slipknot either. They are two totally different styles of music.

  • Im actually being honest when I say this:

"I will accept that the music might be very very difficult to play due to outta whack time sigs and all that jazz. But its just not my style ay. Sorry if it seemed a little oppinionated and all that. In fact, im a great fan of different music. I hate music that ""tonnes"" of other people are into. Like rap and rave. I enjoy being different. Dare to be different. And I do despise it when people get all angry and hate on eahc other over the internet :P

  • I will kill you. Directly. Thank you.

  • This song is fucking genius. I actually like this version better than their studio version.

  • ronoman88: I can barely read what you wrote. If you're trying to come off as some musical elitist, you should probably improve the quality of your writing if you want people to take you seriously. I wouldn't be able to take you seriously anyway, since you can't seem to differentiate between Slipknot and Unexpect.

  • lollin hard at the thought of comparing Unexpect to Slipknot, and actually handing the crown to the latter.

I like the live version of this song better than the studio one.

  • Complètement envoûtant!

  • I'll assume I'm responding to an act mem of unexpect. I've praised unequiv.unexpects visuals and lv performance. The ingred in your mus recipe tonal or atonal "pictures" have been done by many grts. The prob is to many ingred hv made not so good soup (goal). I hum suggested going into your parents rec coll and rediscovr Jesus Christ Sprstr orig soun trk.Andrew Lloyd Webber and Brahms 1st symp. lis carefully! and dev melodies tht are stronger that stand time. Then unexpect will conquer the world!

  • First off, are you incapable of pressing the "reply" button? Second, what the heck happened to your spelling?

  • ronoman88, what kind of sound do you think they're trying to get? Their music is fractured intentionally. They draw influence from progressive rock and experimental music like Mr. Bungle. Their music goes way beyond Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, NIN, and Ministry. What you want is from them is more accessible songs. This band is pushing the boundaries of metal and creating new sounds, an not failing at playing something that meets your expectations.

  • "There style is what makes them unique"

Thanks lainEmslie for the deep insight.

In 10 yrs when you graduate High School you might say technically why these artists are so great.

  • Yes Like Slipknot!!!! Young impressionable musically undeveloped student(willing to listen) in that the style of this band and Slipknot is outstanding. The visuals are impeccable like Marilyn Manson,NIN,Ministry but the music is fragmented without purpose so far. They are young and talented but the next record better No MUST! expand the song melody longer. If not they're dead and they become Cirque de Soleil "heavy" Hear me my Canadian style advisors of the North it's songs that count. Les.done.

  • There style is what makes them unique. Besides, oh great music advisor what have you accomplished?

  • First, I have to tell you that fragmentation ia totally part of our goal...the thing is that all these "fragments" melted together are making a melody not based on pitch (like a tonal scale), but on "musical pictures" that can be moods, music genres, dynamics, rythmic paterns, orchestrations, etc.... This album was made like that and I'm not telling that the next one will be so...I don't beleive in a one way magical recipe for music

  • Pretty awesome, need to check this band out.

  • unexpect is like my fave band.. but this was on fox!!!!?????!!! ive never heard tell of this show or seen it on.

  • outstanding style and flawless execution like Slipknot. But the substance of the music in its totality is suspect because the melodies of most of the material presented seem fractured or in my view incomplete. There next record if they continue on this path I believe will not bring them to the heights they so wish to achieve. I wish them well for trying to expand the boundries Black Metal in an operatic style but its lack of longer melodic lines keep me from giving them their ultimate due

  • Like Slipknot?!?!?

    What???

  • Seriously, were you just trying to use as many big words as you could?

Besides, Slipknot? Black Metal? Really? No. And as far as I can tell, they aren't looking for too much fame, they're just playing the kind of music they like playing. They wouldn't play such erratic music that would obviously never get much mainstream praise if they were looking for fame.

But whatever, if you don't really like them, that's your thing.

  • she looks stupid.
