i just keep coming back to this documentary - it's so naturalistic in a way modern docs aren't. they just put the camera on him and let him talk... theycleaner really strings it together too - it's just a beautiful slice of life.
it doesnt surprise me that hines seems so good natured, it's right there in his music. the man had a sublime talent. the version of "Say It Isnt so" around 35 mins is just beautiful, poginant and moving in equal measure.
EARL THANKYOU ! ALL I CAN SAY IS SUBLIME . A REAL REAL GEM IN OUR MUSICAL WORLD .SOMETIMES SOMEONE SPEACIAL COMES ALONG AND THAT WAS EARL. ART TATUM LOVED EARL HINES SO WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT . THE WORLD IS SO MUCH BETTER FOR HAVING HIM ,BUT SO SAD WITHOUT HIM. THANKYOU FOR WHAT YOU DID FOR US EARL ! I LOVE PLAYING PIANO AND EVEN WHEN IM PLAYING I THINK I WONDER WHAT EARL WOULD DO NOW!!!!!!!THANKS WAYNE
The man is an absolute master of real time composition. The word 'jazz' encompasses so many approaches to music it is almost meaningless. Hines is an inspiration and deserves a category of his own!
My ears and my eyes deceive me, I should start listening to this guy more and put that dude Tatum aside for an Oscar Peterson, two months to be precise. Lol...
A beautiful jazz documentary vid is from Tolesi on Earl Hines. Hines said that he played octaves in his right hand on piano to be heard over the horns, which included Louis Armstrong! His two-handed voicings and passing notes and harmonic thinking are additional contributions to the art of jazz.
This music is just incredible. I love the way Hines' music builds thru the film until, in Pt II, "Stanley's Dance" and then "Say it isn't So" are just magical. Wow, just Wow - and thank you.
Really interesting, didn't expect that i'd watch it all but it went by so quickly. Loved the parts about Al Capone and the prohibition act in the 1920s.
so this must have been made by ATV in 1973 - and he still had another whole decade to go!
just superb
what a genius

Fatha Hines has his fingers in all the Jazz since I was a child (born 1933). What a wonderful musician and he just keeps on bringing it.

It's always a treat to watch an older film that talks about even older subjects. Shows a greater depth of perspective.

@EarlFaulk In the film they say he is 70 at the time then, so that would make the date of this film about 1972 or so.
