The Spartans last stand was the most human spirited and unselfish thing human beings could do for the world.  They fought to the very last breath, 300 vs hundreds of thousands. They bought time for the future of the world. I firmly believe the Spartans were the most caring people in the world of those who cared for them.

The children actually had a choice, and it was believed in Spartan tradition that the passing of semen was actually the giving of knowledge, and boys saw it as a way into manhood, it was normal for them and did not see it is as sexual perversion. You hold them up to harsh standards even though they had a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT culture, since it was thousands of years ago after all.

They were the ones thought to lead the battle, and the Athenians/Greeks fell back when they knew they were screwed, and so they could warn everyone to leave the city of Athens. The Spartans stood back to give them some time, that one act shaped the history of our society, Greece would be inhabited by Persians. You're only saying it's over-romanticized because of the movie, not the story.

It is over-romanticized because there were closer to 1500 soldiers (not 300, there were 300 spartans) and there was an entire naval battle led by Hermaphacles that was equally as important, but nobody remembers that part. This is not the only time in history a vastly outnumbered force has fought (and some of those forces actually won unlike the spartans)
