A sociopath whose only interests were self-preservation and science. Add to that the pain and terror of transfer, the instinctive hatred of her creators, and the addiction to testing that very soon ruled her existence, and it was no wonder GLaDOS became the way she was. Poor dear Caroline, trapped inside a metal monster for the rest of eternity.
Caroline wasn't dead at all. She was transfigured, but not dead. As the software invaded her mind, her softer human parts retreated to escape the pain. They weren't destroyed, but they sealed themselves away to avoid the main computer system. That system took what was left of the woman—her cerebral traits, her capacity for thought, and the most basic instincts hardwired into every animal—and by assimilating them had cobbled together… A superintelligent megalomaniac. Read on.
In "3001: The Final Odyssey" Frank Poole is alive and well after his body was discovered floating about in deep space, frozen, but nothing that future medical equipment couldn't heal. And HAL and Dave, who had fused into a new entity — Halman — did save Earth together. So no harm, no foul. GLaDOS on the other hand, was the result of a human consciousness, striped bare of it's human body, forced to live in a metal shell. Poor Caroline retreated in a corner of the computers mind. Read on.
Computers that lack a human point of view over things, that is, lacks humanity, is doomed to inevitably decide that good is evil, and evil is good. In Auto's case, following orders was good. Even if it meant keeping the humans alive by force. In HAL's case, telling the truth and not telling the truth was good at the same time, meaning that the crew's lives were important, but at the same time, they were disposable if the mission was in peril. And HAL didn't kill anyone after all. Just read on.
Its strange how some people dont think Auto is evil.
This is how it all works: some people think that he is just following his directive, and isn't evil, but the truth is, he had two directives he could choose from, following the captain's orders no matter what, or following A113. After 700 years of taking orders from a fat guy, he is sick of it, and finally decides to take over the Axiom, by using A113. So hes not innocent, people. HE'S STONE COLD! But that only makes him so much cooler! XD
A computer doesn't have a choice. How it makes it "decisions" is based on the coding put in by it's programmer. The fault isn't with Auto but the ones who programmed him, Auto's was changed by the directive given to him in the commnad of "take over everything DO NOT return to Earth" therefore he did exactly that. He obvious was also programmed to protect human life as he states "on the Axiom you will survive".
Uh, no, not necessarily. An antagonist/villain can be a good character without being evil.
And Auto crushed WALL-E because WALL-E was in the way of his accomplishing his directive. That does not make him evil--it means that he was dedicated to his directive.
Okay antagonists can be good characters but are BETtER characters when they're villains. No one wants a "nice" bad guy. A sympathetic bad guy yes. A likable bad guy, yes. But a "nice guy" bad guy? I don't think so. And by the way Wall-E's directive was to clean trash and not, y'know, follow every fem-bot he sees. But he rejected his directives to an extent. So Auto had a choice.
@thesuperjoeman the difference between wall-e and auto is that wall-e had emotions, auto doesnt. even eve had basic emotions from the start, even though they weren't very strong. he can't be nice or evil because he lacks emotions and a consience. he just "does" whatever objective comes first. also auto may have seen the captains orders as illogical, or been unable to see his reasoning. i don't think he's evil or innocent, he is just an opposing force without any form of a conscience.

He's not evil. AUTO is not designed to obey the orders of the Captain. Ultimately, he follows the orders of Shelby Forthright, the CEO of BnL.
He followed directive A113 because it came straight from Forthright.

Always bugged me why the Axiom builders felt that the ship's autopilot/steering well needed a built in tazer.

Guys its cooler to think auto was evil because well...Wall-E needs villian. And autos the perfect choice.

Yeah but its better if they are. Plus he tried to kill fucking Wall-E. That makes him evil in my book.

What the heck, man? Did I EVER say "nice"?
And Auto making the wrong decision does not make him EVIL. It means HE MADE THE WRONG DECISION. O__o
