This article is incorrect. Pixel mapping stops 'hot pixels' on the sensor showing up on your photos. it does nothing to the lcd. Beware, Nikon cameras do not include this feature!
To see it in action take a shot with the lens cap on and pixel peep for the little one pixel blue, green, red or white dots. You should see at least a couple of them. Now turn the camera off and back on and note how long the red LED stays lit, then go into the menu and change the date to the next month. Turn it off and then on and it takes much longer before the LED turns off, take another capped shot and compare the two to see the dead pixels are now black.
True, it's also known as black frame noise reduction or dark frame subtraction and is the first step that should be performed if you're shooting astrophotograpy. Also true that the Sony's perform this automatically everytime the date changes to the next month.
I think the A300 is the best value for the money. Right now on Sonystyle they have it for $699, this includes the body and 2 lenses. If you call and order by phone they will give you $80 off the vertical grip. For this level of photography this camera take very nice photos. The IQ is sharp and detailed. It has the best live view in it's class. A tilt lcd. Image stabilization built into the body. Dust sensor cleaner which works everytime to turn off the camera.
No question is dumb,a vertical grip is a piece you screw into the bottom of the camera and you can turn the camera 90 degrees to take portrait shots. It also adds a second shutter button and acouple basic controls. It also holds a second battery to double the shooting time.
Hum... Pixel mapping isn't about fixing the LCD screen.
