You need to learn this style of singing; how to play bass, drums, and guitar; and be ready to play something. If you've got that, tune everything low (I thing DtG uses something like drop F# tuning on their guitars). As far as basic software, I started off using Audacity. It's free, but if you're a really serious band, I recommend buying something. Ask at guitar center or a local club.
