hello! need help... can u please help me how to fine tune my sony bravia ex500... got channels with blurry picture... no sound too... thanks in advance...
I guess this is a good place to start if you don't know anything about TVs, but there is a ton of information that is not mentioned here. Refresh rate for example is not as big of a deal as many advertisements would have you believe. Most sources run at 30 frames per second, and on a 60hz display, each frame is displayed twice. On a 120hz display, each frame is displayed four times. Of course there are technologies that take advantage of the refresh rate, look it up.
Plasma on it's way out the door...? Will be fully replaced by led technology...?
Ya. sure pal. Pay twice the price for a display with inferior picture reproduction. Last year, I bought a 40" samsung lcd 60 hz 1080p for $750. Motion resolution sucked. High speed games were virtually unplayable.Took it back to trade up to the 120hz model...FOR $300 MORE! instead went to panny plasma 42" 600hz 1080p for $50 less. I couldn't be happier. Color is rich. High speed motion is no problem.
You can spot the difference between native 720p and 1080p even on a 22 inch monitor as far as im concerned. i had native 19 inch monitor 720p and switched over to 22 inch 1080p and the aliasing disappeared, also the textures were much more rich and overall the graphics seemed improved.
But only applies for native. if the image is upscaled then no difference is really noticed which is why newegg made that mistake of saying get 1080p if you need bigger than 32 inch.
i like your PC vids but pls dont act like you know about display technologies...there are only 2 technologies PDP's and LCD's...the Supposed LED TVs on the market today use LCD tech with LED backlighting...they have all the drawbacks of conventional CCFL Backlit LCDs...Slow Response times, Bad Viewing Angles, Inaccurate color reproduction, and Picture Uniformity Issues
Confused. Becuase of pulldown, would it not be better to play an xbox game locked at 60fps on 60Hz tv rather than a game running say 60fps on 120hz. I know computer games/rigs can hit high numbers like 120+ but would pulldown still make a solid 60 on 60 a better choice? Same for true cinema 24 w/ 24. Get what I'm asking?
Just gonna ignore DLP? I picked up a 60" Mitsubishi for $800. Three HDMI ports, and it's 3D-ready. You won't find a better value. It's 14" deep, but it's not like I need a 1" thick screen when it sits on top of an entertainment center which takes up a larger footprint than the TV anyway.
Wrong, there are LED TVs available. (Very hard to come by currently) a quick search for the Sony - XEL-1, the first commercially available LED tv (a miserly 11" across) to my knowledge. Another is a LG EL9500.
Newegg seems to know their stuff, they do afterall make a load of cash, and also do vids like this to inform the masses.
@Spivonious Yes I, am, and yes they are available to the consumer, have been for 2 years now. They of course are expensive as hell... but then again you can debate them being available to the consumer based purely on being able to buy it at a walmart too...
sorry newegg, bad advice, LED LCD is inferior to plasma when it comes to blacks, LED backlights crush the darkest tones. plasma is better for home theater enthusiast
@bangbongbong Yeh, agree. Plasma despite being bigger and using more power is the superior technology. All the various TV companies marketed LCD as if it were better because it was much thinner.
This is a good guide on HDTVs. I sell televisions so I go over this information with customers all the time. I wish more customers would watch this information before coming in. I was fairly relieved to see that I was correct about all the information I was giving out. I was also glad that the review of edge-lit LED LCD TV's was accurate. Full panel LED LCD's are the truly the next step into TV's of the future. Edge-lit is only holding us back from better pictures on TV's.
They mention LCD can be multi-purpose and you can hook a computer up to it - but you can do that to ALL TYPES of TVs now. I'm even building a computer to hook into my buddy's DLP DVI port right now (LOL).
He forgot to mention image burn-in for plasma. That's pretty important. If you leave a plasma TV on pause, or on a menu (basically if one image is there all the time), it will burn into the screen, and you'll keep seeing it, or a faint version of it.
After you "break in" your plasma, burn-in isn't that big a deal. I've had my 50" Samsung plasma for 2 years and it doesn't burn anything in anymore. For the first 18 months, the only burn-in I had was temporary anyways. Just throw a good screensaver on there for a few hours to get rid of any temporary burn-in.
@j0rdanimal ...burn in is a non issue with newer plasma. You'd have to leave the screen on pause for many hours to get a ghost. (I play lots of COD. mini map is up constantly. I've had no problems) And even then, just watch tv for a few hours and it will go away. To get permanant burn in, a person whould have to be trying to make that happen with some unusually cruel abuse.
This was a good video, a few notes/corrections: it would have been nice to mention what connectors were digital and what were analog, you can transmit HD over coax cable but it needs a digital signal, audio connectors should have been mentioned, there are very few people who know the quality of digital audio but i guess its good for beginners
@ph3rr3r0 i only encourage morons to do so. such as you. >:3 you shouldn't be amazed as to how much society hates people like you. so you mine as well do everyone a favor. :)

A 120 Hz TV doesn't automaticly mean that it has a 120 Hz input.
You might have a 60 Hz HDMI input at the back but the TV:s refresh rate is 120 Hz
This is important when it comes to the new 3D TV:s
A 3D TV requiers a 120 Hz input, not just a 120 Hz refresh rate.

One issue with the video.
Component RGB does NOT output full 1080 HD, only 720p resolution.
Other than that, great overview.

Plasma destroys LCD and LED-backlit LCD (there's no such thing as an "LED" TV).
