That whole conflict started because the ottoman empire (muslims) allowed jews to settle in an arid uninhabitable area. When the jews made a go of it, it attractive muslim unskilled labour. And when the muslim population became large enough, they revolted (cf arab revolt, 1936) to kill off the jews, because they were trying to establish their own country.
