i have owned quite few different diesel landcruisers and although some have better or worse approach and departure angles, i gotta say the 80 series with the 1HD-T, manual, 3in OME suspension and 33in mudders is the best i've ever owned. a truly phenomal machine. tough as hell and go anywhere offroad and great on the road too ( a bit noisy with the muddders of course)
what is that silly looking bar in the front of those trucks? I cant figure out what its used for... and in some parts of the video its up, some its down..
At 2:16 the narrator comments that those bars were used for safety, in case they didn't see a crack in the ice and they fell in. The bars would stop the truck and give them enough space for them to back up.
first vehicle to climb Mt.Fuji now first to cross the massive harsh Arctic...wow Toyota. a Truely remarkable Icon. Oneday historians in 2300A.D will talk about these machines.
they run on very low tire pressure for best traction. ocassionally the tires will slip off the rims. to reset the bead the driver sprayed starting fluid in/around the rim. when he ignites the fluid, the expansion pops the tires back on the bead...pretty cool saw the english version a while back
Well, new ones do. The pre-94 classics are cool. Not as reliable as Cruisers, I admit, but still very capable and cool vehicles in their own right. Like it says on the leather-wrapped owner's manual... "Range Rover: A Rather Exceptional Vehicle"
80 series for life!!

Those bars are there in the event the front end (heavy end) of the cruiser falls through the ice.

It's so they can splay huge cracks in the terrain (ice) so that they dont just fall into them when trying to drive over.

Why don't they just get bead lock rims? Then it wouldn't come off in the first place.

old video. If they were available then, the beadlocks that were available at the time were illegal for highway use.
