  • Mrkennylun: that's awesome. I wish I could have met her, but I was a small child when she passed.

Like someone else posted: this is from the time when artists had to have ACTUAL talent to get a deal and not a gimmick....

  • she's beautiful

  • She was a beautiful star! with a beautiful voice that left here much too soon!

  • I mistook her voice to be male

  • @dapithapon you're retarded.

  • "Old friend, it's so nice to feel you hold me again..."

    143zaj!

  • I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE MET PHYLLIS BACK IN NEW YORK AROUND 1979 OR1980. WE HAD A LONG CONVERSATION OVER DRINKS,AND SHE CHARMED AND MESMERISED ME FOR HOURS. A FEW MONTHS LATER I SAW HER PERFORM IN HOUSTON, AND SHE REMEMBERED EVERY WORD WE HAD SAID. I LAST SAW HER ABOUT 3 MONTHS BEFORE HER UNTIMELY PASSING IN L.A. SHE SEEMED SAD, BUT WAS AS CHARMING AND BEAUTIFUL AS EVER. I MISS HER AND THINK OF HER OFTEN. REST PEACEFULLY PRETTY LADY. YOU WERE TRULY A STAR AND I,LL ALWAY LOVE YOU.

  • @MrKennylun She did remember everyword said, and YOU as well. I experienced the same. Nothing phony about this woman at all.

  • True talent is appreciated forever....even after the person is gone!! Those that clicked the dislike button are most likely fans of the "new" singers...you know, those that sing through their noses instead of the diaphragm....the ones that all sound alike in every song they attempt to sing....

  • she still gives me goosebumps to this day......and I still miss her.....

  • she still stands tall......

  • Miss Her Music!

  • She was awesome!!!!

  • She was awesome....

  • When we lose a talent of this caliber, we are left to decide if we need a "new" voice, or someone who can take up the stance of the performer who has been lost.

As I see the new crop of "superstar performers", I am left empty, because they are not true artists, they are automotons who will spew out the latest "sounds" and leave the world with less, than was there when they started.

Phyllis was special, and she was relevant, then, and now. That is what makes a performer, an artist!

  • @free2bpoppie AGREED!!!

  • What a gorgeous voice!! What a shame she is no longer with us...And a beautiful song!

  • Love it!

  • phyllis, anita, patti and sade i'll make it through the trials and tribulations of life itself

  • thanks for info guys....never thought she was that depressed

  • how she die????

  • @15551cue She killed herself

  • @RevolverOcelot07 thats sad, thanks for info

  • @15551cue Phyllis had an untreated bi polar condition which also haunted her mother and ultimately hindered her success in the music business.

  • @stanleyballard God, that is just so sad...Now they have made so many advances in Bi-Polar illness...just so sorry it wasn't around for Phyllis and others..:(

  • @15551cue She swallowed sleeping pills and laid down. She left a note for people to read. So sad.

  • beautiful.....wish you had lived to see the 21st century, you would have loved it,Phyllis

  • yes i love this song too :)

  • without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs ever, sung by one of the greatest voices ever. RIP Phyllis...you are missed

  • I had the GREAT Honor of meeting Miss Hyman one day in Manhattan, NYC. A very dear friend of mine name Arthur Magee who was a designer, who knew her on a first name basis. She was coming out of a club called The Blue Note where she was sing later that night. Miss Phyllis Hyman was and will always be one of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SINGERS of all time. R.I.P Sweet Lady, gone but you will never be forgotten

  • @discomonkey56 She invited me to one of her shows at the Blue Note because I mentioned I always wanted to see her perform in a more intimate setting. I asked about getting tickets. "Tickets?", she said. "You just walk in and tell them you're a friend of Phyllis". And I did, I'm serious.

  • @BiPolarBS Yes I know what you mean :-) Miss Hyman was a REAL classy LADY in every sense of the word. She will forever hold a very SPECIAL place in my HEART. May Peace and Blessings be upon you. It is so good to know that other persons loved her as much as I did.

  • I have not heard this song in so many years!! Yes for good quality music we must go back way back in time. Today's music is lose and empty, the artistes now have no idea how to sing.

  • RevovlverOcelot07, She suffered from Bi polar disorder, along with other issues. Had she gotten help, well this angel voice may still be here today.

  • @dls99 Hence my user name. It's called - moods. We all have them. Some of us have moods that just swing a lil' too far either way. Try those meds. Just try them. Phyllis couldn't take them either. She sought "help" from Doctors (drug dealers with degrees) getting free vacations from pharmaceutical reps. Not the answer either.

  • @BiPolarBS I hope you are feeling better and better, BiPolar...My prayers and love go out to you, friend ;-)

  • @oofahman Thanks but I'm not bi-polar. The "BS" is that so many people are wrongly diagnosed with bipolar disease. For most it's simply moods - that all humans go through.

  • @BiPolarBS There are "pharmaceutical" companies and doctors (i.e. drug dealers with degrees) making a mint off of this.

  • @BiPolarBS AH...gotcha ;-)...And i understand perfectly what you're saying :)

  • I miss you and still love you wherever you are.

  • jasmine sillivan remind me of her

  • for the past 21 years since this song became famous i never thought that the singer of this is a female. I thought it was a male..her voice sounds like a male. nevertheless, i really dont know the name of the singer. I was at my kiddo years when it became so famous not until right when I searched this song tru its title!! Nostalgic! the song of my elementary years... 4th grader i think..

  • i'm still waiting for someone to do a movie about her...Jasmine Sullivan should play her

  • " this is where our happy ending...begins!" such powerful lyrics and an emotional song. i reconnected with an old highschool sweetheart and we picked up where we left off.

  • Its a shame that most people under 30 have no recollection, knowledge or understanding of the talents of this brilliant woman.........She was incomparable and didn't even know it....

  • @mrhowardb Truly!

  • Beautiful song

  • There Will NEVER Be Another... RIP Phyllis

  • THIS SONG REMNDS OF MY MOMS DECISION WHETHER TO CHOOSE MY FATHER OR ANOTHER MAN WHO IS SPECIAL TO HER HEART, but she knew that she would be both unfair to them, because at that time ,my mom is carrying me in her womb , both man holds a special place in her hjeart , she chose my dad

  • I AGREE WITH OTHERS WHO HAVE DISDAIN FOR THE IDIOTS WHO SUPPOSEDLY DISLIKE THIS GREAT SONG.

  • Such a beautiful song, sung with an amazing voice. R.I.P Phyllis

  • this song go out to my friend susan pruitt i still think of younot the hold u part just the sentiment of it

  • one of my favorite song from phyllis and she was so beautiful .

  • Absolutley Phyliss at her best. It was always a Sunday song that I would listen to and cry my eyes out. Doing it righ now.

  • PHYLLIS WAS SOME ONE I DID HAVE THE GREAT OPPORTUNITY OF HAVING MET IN MY LIFE TIME AND WAS ABLE TO CALL HER A FRIEND. I WISH HER PEACE MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE . EVERYONE SHOULD CHECK OUT FREDA PAYNE'S SONG ON YOU TUBE " HE GAIN THE WORLD BUT LOST HIS SOUL " VERY TOUCHING TO HEAR AND SEE THE PHOTOS OF THE PEOPLE WE HAVE LOST ALONG THE WAY

  • I was in the 8th grade when i heard this song,i wanted to know who this woman was, after that i brought everything she made prior than "old friend" amazing ,amazing voice! I will always miss you Phyllis, Icried soooooo hard when she passed!..i still often think about her..you will be truly missed

  • love it

  • Got chills off of this one...

  • moving!!!

  • Just love the song.

  • Crying Right now....I feel this song soooo much i'm so heartbroken.

  • It still plays good and i dont remember the last time i heard this song,it sounds like it has just been released.I still cant believe that death has robbed us this beautiful artist.

  • @1357mtv: Phyllis Hyman suffered from moderate to severe bi-polar disorder which stemmed from her manic-depression. She didn't want to take the proper medication thats used to "level out" one who suffers from this disorder, so instead she "self-medicated" with cocaine (which she was introduced to by a previous boyfriend). The problem with cocaine is that it is a catastrophic drug that completely rots you. So she ended up killing herself.

  • @MisterR82 Read about the "killing herselfs" of the myriads of "proper medications" out there. Have you read about the 1 in 5 Americans on anti-psychotic medications? Do you wonder why this country is in it's current state? I wish I would have got my pharmaceutical degree back about 20 year ago. I would be sittin' real, real pretty right about now. Try some Zoloft and check back in a couple of weeks. It could "rot" you as well.

  • Think the beginning was inspiration for Danity Kane's "Ride for You?"

  • i truly miss my friend ;every time i hear this i think of our times together

  • Happy labor day

  • my dad put me on phyllis hyman and i been listening to it for the past 2weeks. really wish she didnt commit suicide, because I would of wanted to meet this lady. Just bought the cd at best buy she is really amazing and makes me want to fall in love. Rest in Peace

  • Standing the test of time. A talent beyond and above most others. This songbird is smiling down on true lovers. "Get with the program fellas".

  • this song always makes me cry.

  • The 18 people who dislike this wouldn't know true talent if it slapped them in the face, and this woman was a true talent! My mom bought this album back in the day, and even as a child I was mesmerized by Phyllis and her voice! It saddens me to this day that she took her life, however, I thank God she left us with great music! RIP

  • @QueenNostalgia I agree about the 18 morons...No one in this current era...NO ONE can compare to Phyllis and other REAL Vocalists of that time. Who do we have today...Lady GagGag? Katy Perry?? PUH LEEEZ! All shtick and gimmick, no real talent.

  • One of my favorites my Phyllis. *smiling*

  • D I n the house. OLD FRIEND is some1 u never 4get. not never. just 2 see their face n smile again. this will b my OLD FRIEND anthem. ur voice will carry on n my heart n soul 4ever phyllis hyman. i grew up on ur songs. again R I P..............BEAUTIFUL LADY.......

  • This song, and this voice, does something to me everytime I hear it. Forever tugs at my heart strings.

  • If you people love Phyllis, you might want to hear Yolanda Rabun she's new on the scene.I love Phyllis too

  • If you people love Phyliss, you might want to hear Yolanda Rabun she's new on the scene

  • Tears me up. Another with great vocal mastery ..& that signature smoky, sensual quality. R.I.P. PH.

  • This is the kind of song that gets in heart and reminds you of that special someone

Very Soulful& Heart felt song!!! Thank you 4 sharing this post :) God bless

  • How well I recall this tune, she performed it live at blues Alley up in Georgetown, DC, she would often set them on fire at the Carter Baron; and they everyone to to rest at Constitution Hall........ we miss you Phyllis...... MJP

  • BEAUTIFUL... Yet Sad.. A loss to the real music world......

  • This is one of my ten female singers and I really miss her and I understand the bouts and the fight with depression she was one of those women that sung out her hurt and yet the right people did not hear her and the sadest thing about this is that she is gone . I guess heaven said she no longer needed to be here but she will always be missed and her music will live on. R.I.P. Ms Hyman : love you

  • @aaustin258 Yes, the right people did not hear her. It hurts me so much, that it's hard for me to listen to her music.

  • THIS IS A REALLY NICE SONG! EVERY TIME I LISTEN TO HER SONGS I CRY! I CANT SHE WAS LONELY AND UNHAPPY! I CAN REMEMBER WHEN I HEARD ON THE RADIO KILLED HERSELF! I CRIED! I WAS SO YOUNG BUT I WAS A BIG FAN! R.I.P PHYLLIS HYMAN!

  • I miss my mom dearly she was best friend 7/19/54/9/15/98

  • This song for some reason is very special to me...it's all in the way it makes me feel.

  • Thanks so much for posting this song. Not a day goes by that I don't think about her and how she was truly a beautiful person.

  • .. it relly makes me cry .. but i still love it anyway .. .. i was not able to listen to this kind of music during the specific era when it existed, but i am so thankful to those people who are generous enough who posted this to let the youngsters like me to realize what music really means.

  • It's such a shame Phyllis Hyman died so young!!!! another example of talent gone too soon!!! I believe if she was still alive today some of these female singers would be in t-r-o-u-b-l-e!!!

  • @ RevolverOcelot07- I hear you man on that one! I am a huge fan of Phyllis and QUALITY MUSIC. I have this on CD and it one of my most cherished albums ever. My godfather played this album for me before he died of AIDS a decade ago. Where is the real music at? It died with DISCO I guess. Keep up the good work- send me some more good music my way!

  • @kittysmooth7 Thank you, I appreciate that. I'm sorry to hear that about your godfather. Both of my hard drives crashed so, I lost alot of music. I'm definitely going to start uploading again very soon. Thanks for watching!

  • @RevolverOcelot07 : thank you so much. This is a real special album to me. I am sorry about ur computer crashing- I will wait patiently for you to gimme some more good music.

  • @RevolverOcelot07 Thanks so much for uploading this. I really miss her. I was so sad and in disbelief. I remember when I got home from work that day and my girlfriends told me the news, and was asking me was I going to go her memorial with them? I couldn't believe it. I was so hurt. I cry everytime I hear any of her songs and wonder why she was so sad to that extent? It just breaks my heart.

  • this song means so much to me

  • this song is dedicated to my daughters father A rchie Mclean R.I.P baby i'll see you soon

  • I sang this song for my High School Talent show in my junior year. Tore the house down!!! NEVER AS MUCH AS THE LATE GREAT PHYLLIS but I did her some justice.

  • One of the few songs that really melt my soul!

  • if you lived to be hundred it would not have been enough you are and always will be missed

  • reminds me of my happier elementary years. This is one meaningful song that hits me like no other. Nostalgic, melancholic...powerful.

  • God word said that there's no sin for committing suicide. BUT don't go there.. God whats you live. If you need help.... God is there...realizing you pain. DETROIT loves you...

  • OMG!!! I haven't heard this song in such a long time!!! it's timeless!!!! wish they were still making hits like this one!! beautiful song!!!

  • I thought all along that singer of this song is a man.. I just knew now that the singer is a woman..hehe

  • @byron i love you !!!

  • I loved her and wish she was still around making music. Sad part is that she thought that nobody cared.

  • To my "Old Friend". I love you and may you RIP...you were gone too soon but you are loved, thought of fondly and missed very much!!! I wish you had not left us by your own hand...but you are gone but not forgotten.

  • To that special special old friend <3

  • This is dedicated to the one i 'll alway's love Archie Mclean..R.I.P till i see you again..aka my daughter's father

  • makes me wana cry

  • O wow, awesome flashback. Thanks. They need to bring this back in rotation on the Quiet Storm.

  • 1) 13 people don't miss their old friend.

    2) I would love for an old friend to hold me again. Phyllis really knew how to reflect, love, pain and passion in her songs

  • i remember being around 13 when this song used to come on the quiet storm at night. i've always loved this song and how phyllis singed the words to it. who knew almost 20 years later i would be listening to this song and it would reasonate with me today. i fully understand where she was coming from because i live everyday with the fact that the women i was supposed to marry, ended up marrying someone else. its tough because today love is not a friend of mine.

  • Aww.. this song does wonders to my heart :) though i first heard it in a reggae version! this is excellent still.

  • One of the most beautifulest song ever written. RIP Phyllis Hyman We miss you and beautiful voice.

  • I saw Phyllis in concert in DC along with Anita Baker back in the late '80s. I will never forget the concert as they both were simply amazing. Unfortunately her last album should have been a warning sign to all of the people close to her. It was a tale of a very sad and lonely soul. Rest In Peace Phyllis, you were truly a beautiful woman.

  • @mrthaddeuswright On point! She was very sad and those songs proved it.

  • @mrthaddeuswright You were VERY LUCKY to see her in concert! She was absolutely gorgeous and her talent is absolutely rare theses days (:

  • @MultiCamdawg There has only been 2 artist who have been able to captivate me and put me in awe of their performance, Anita Baker and Phyliss.

  • Wow. I'd forgotten this great song.

  • "this is where our happy ending...begins!" what more can be said?

  • beautiful still so much talent...miss her

  • The wife/girlfriend/family thing has kind of passed me by. I sing this to my dog who's 13 years old.

  • i freakin love her

  • i love this song

  • EVERYBODY CAN RELATE 2 A OLD FRIEND. BRING BACK SO MANY GOOD MEMORIES.

  • I sing just like her will post a video soon :-)

  • This song is so deep and yet sad, A woman of such talent committing suicide. I love this song and Living all alone will be all time classics for which she will be forever remembered. These songs are a story of love and of tragedy.

  • This song is so deep and yet sad, A woman of such talent committing suicide. I love this song and Living all alone will be all time classics for which she will be forever remembered.

  • God this song is so sad. Miss her and those that will stay in our hearts forever.

  • The voice that is attractive in glamourous looks is the best!

    懐かしい名曲をありがとう

  • Very Talented and Gifted Singer of all time. Her voice was so powerful!! MISS YOU!!!

  • I have missed her so much. She was a fabulous singer.. Thank God her music will live on. Most of her songs make me cry. Happy and sad tears.

  • this song really makes me cry ..

i am just 18 but i really enjoy these kind of music ..

thanks for sharing this one, it is amazing..

i now know who is the original singer of it.

  • LAWD HAVE MERCY!!!!!! THIS is how you deliver a ballad! If a lady sang like this to me, I would probably run to her and hold her in my arms "Casablanca" style! LOL.

  • @mrhowadb: I think she did know it......it was the record company who didn't understand her true value and in particular Clive Davis.....the snake that he is. He was never able to manipulate Ms Hyman and he didn't really like her because of her independent thinking. They never really marketed her like they did Ms Whitney Houston. As a matter of fact when Whintey came onboard Clive (the parasite) Davis dropped Ms Hyman like a hot potatoe. I think she died a very hurt and broken woman.

  • How sad that she couldnt see the beauty in herself that we see. she had such a beautiful voice.

  • @nelsonsonja Thank you...Damn I dont know what these other people talkin about, violations & fines... The real & only tragedy is that Phyllis had such an impact on people with her sound, that she never was able to realize it.... But thank God she left her music behind for us to reflect on... We miss you !

  • wow .. i love this song eversince i was a kid

  • Such a creative, lovely and captivating expression of love and truth ,genuinely expressed and heartfelt expressive rendition of Gods' songstress, whom we were so blessed to have among us.

  • Thank you GOD for giving this world such an angle. In looking at many interviews of Phylis Hyman, it is clear to see that she was desperately searching for love. However , GOD loves her BEST! Her work here on earth is done. I only hope that she has found the love that she couldn't find here on earth. Thank you Youtube for posting all of the wonderful songs from such a beautiful song bird. RIP

  • this was and still is a beautiful song

  • WOW!!!!!!! PRICELESS!!!! THERE IS NO OTHER

  • Along with Sade, Phyllis is the only other woman I truly love listening to when I want QUALITY romantic music from start to finish. The depth of feelings she envokes when you listen to her sultry voice truly makes you want to believe that true love really does exist :)

  • It was 1986 when i heard this song for the first time and it blew me away i was 18 and now i am 42 and i still get the same feelings all i can say is wow my ex wife would get mad at me when i talked about Phillis how lovely she was tall and sexy i had a bad crush on this woman and when she took her life i was lost in love and played her songs my ex broke all my lp and casset of her but now i got you tube to listen to

  • wow how dare you fowl PH memories wth all that stupid crap

  • wow how dare you fowl PH memories wth all stupid crap

  • WOW!! How sad people can't just enjoy this beautiful music.

  • This woman was absolutely incomparable and the sad part is she didn't even know it....

  • @mrhowardb: You are so right. This is what depression can do - it makes it impossible to see the good in your life. The desperation one must feel when they are in this state...extremely sad and profound.

  • @mrhowardb

my High school sweetheart said this song is always going to OUR SONG for now and ever....

  • I cannot believe Im still hurt from her death and after listening to her music it still brings sobs like a down right baby to my heart. i love u phyllis...u were the one girl. U will forever b missed baby...I love u...I lov u...

  • @shonallen1970: I agree with you. The tears flow...this sad song doesn't help. I believe it's still painful because it was such a shock to learn of her death. I remember when I heard it on the news. I also believe it's still painful because of the way she died. Mental illness untreated can lead to tragic consequences....it leaves a person feeling hopeless, and helpless.

  • THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL SONG IT BRINGS BACK SO MANY MEMORIES

  • Incredibly beautiful woman

    Incredibly beauftiful song

    Incredibly beautiful voice

Been listening to all the female greats tonight and she's one of them
