OMG!!! I have been huge purveyor of British Rock from this era, and I have never heard this song before until last night!!!!!!!! While I can kick myself for missing out all these years, I actually this it is great I discovered it now. I can now dig and find every Badfinger album and rejoice hearing new "old" music. Sometimes you can think you've "heard it all," and then you get your ass kicked like this. It's great....
After listening to this I wonder why one of his best friends and one of the people that he looked up to the most "George Harrison" didnt ask him to play one of the lead guitar for the Concert for Bangladesh. he just played an acoustic for the concert. Surprising cause anyone knows that George always gave anyone their chance to shine unlike Paul and John with their egos.
Baby Blue was always my favourite song....but decades later, this favourite is at the top. stands the test of time, in fact strangely The very tile of the song Predicted that it would be..."TIMELESS..." thank the good lord we had Pete Ham with us back in the day...and still in way do now. Love it, Love it, LOVE IT!!!!
Joey Molland should give more credit to Pete during his performances and celebrate the music of this remarkable group of musicians known as Badfinger. Pete, Tom and Mike .... your music lives on thanks to You Tube. Just listen to this guitar playing ... what a wasted talent!
where,s the recognition for this true guitar driven classic ?never heard this on the radio ever,,thats an injustice this stuff should be on the airwaves right accross the globe,, predominantly a welsh band,,so lets start with swansea council and maybe the local radio station,,,badfinger,,,,,legends,
I'm addicted to BADFINGER these days. I can't stop listening their music. What a beautiful harmony in Pete Ham and Tom Evans. I love their innocence, passion...everything. It's really superb!! Forever Pete Hame, Tom Evans and Mike Gibbins.
@curtmath That one is easy. The people who make up the rankings have never listened to anything that hasn't been played endlessly on the radio. If they had ever taken the time to do so, The top 100 we see year after year in Rolling Stone would look a lot different. Pete Ham was legendary, but will never get any credit from these fools. I own more Badfinger albums than Clapton, if that means anything.
@pindowskivich Could you tell me how many Badfinger LP's were made? I have only one, No Dice and love it. I had Straight Up on 8 track once but it died along time ago with all the rest. I love Badfinger! Great band!!
@randlec6 If you count "Maybe Tomorrow" - an album released by Badfinger, yet under the name "The Iveys", that brings the number to 10. Maybe Tomorrow, Magic Christian Music, No Dice, Straight Up, Ass, Badfinger, Wish You Were Here, Head First, Airwaves, and Say No More. Then, there are other albums (best ofs, live releases, and bootlegs) that aren't counted here.
In the photo Pete is playing the SG given to him by George Harrison. I heard them perform "Timeless" in St. Louis before Ass was released, with Joey jokingly renaming the tune "Horror in the Wax Museum." A stunningly powerful piece in a live setting. They were always MUCH more powerful live than the studio recordings would indicate - something that frustrated the band a good deal, leading to attempts to produce themselves that were never accepted by Apple.
wonderful piece of badfingers mastery of the timeless music they could produce in a way only a small number of bands are capable of,although they were cursed from the start, that turmoil turned into some positive musical exploits, pete never wasted time, no matter what the situation was,,,he always put it to music and he and the guys left us some great music,,badfingerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Tommy is always there singing those upper register harmonies, allowing Badfinger to use their voices with so much effect - something that the Beatles did so well, too. Damn few groups had the ability to be so effective with their vocals.
as pete says,we are timeless, and l really do think as a band they are, they re gonna be around for a very very long time indeed,,they have only just scratched the surface, they are a phenomena with old and young alike, badfingerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
F****ing 1970's Rock...this defines the early 1970's. Not a better flag to fly concerning our days past. They say the beatles told harry nilsson to seek another record company. He signed with RCA i believe. Who knows what "the Iveys" may have accomplished had they had a chance to....enough now!...thanks boys for the chills, the thrills and the smiles...
I always have named Baby Blue as my Favourite song, but now a generation later I choose this one. A work of art, buliding suspense, reaching a cresendo, drenched in the white noise, cloaking the Band's escape from Apple Corp, and in the end rich in the theology of Our kind. God Keep Our Pete in his care.
I'd like to hear "they're knocking down our home" again someday. A charming MCcartney type ditty. Mum's cooking at the stove for where shes cooked for 30 years. Dad's digging at the plot.....
Reminds me of I want you from the beatles white album with the ending shes so heavy and guitar hook with white noise and sounds creating a back ground wash melting into the guitar solo and a spacey psychedelic buzz that sucks you in as you float in a state of euphoria hoping the jam will never end. Pete Ham's masterpiece solo.
An amazing band. Whenever I think I've heard "the best of" Badfinger, I discover a new song that just blows me away. Thanks for all the beautiful music, guys.
First heard of them when they were "The Iveys", an early Apple Records signing, with a mysterious single "Maybe Tomorrow" b/w "Daddy's A Millionaire". Then, not too long after, they were in the soundtrack to Ringo's solo movie star debut, "The Magic Christian" with "Come & Get It", which sounded just like Paul, yes, with the new name Badfinger, a better name by far. Saw Ringo's movvie right here at the Georgia Theater, which was demolished decades ago to build some crappy cheesy 1980s building.
Wow... I just discovered this song, and am absolutely speechless. The lyrics and the guitar work are stunning. This is truly music that can transform. What a beautiful, deep-thinking soul Pete Ham was. He did not deserve such torment in life. He gave so much of himself.
What a great song I never heard this before, they should make a movie about the life of Bad finger I believe this band has earned this after all the pain it's been through. After all they had the backing of the Beatles who believed in them. They were truly one of the greats.
this song is amazing, like pete ham himself,a true allrounder if ever there was one,the heartbeat of the band, this story of badfinger and its ruthless management is a film just crying out to be made, pete ham like the rest of us wasnt perfect, but when it comes to musical genius, look no further, the guy was a legend, make no mistake,
@jonruss56 , your comment is spot on,,only wish l had the means to kickstart the making of what lm sure would be a smash hit film on a band who richley deserve some long overdue belated recognition for their musical contribution to this industry of ours,,but most of all the tragic pitfalls that lie in wait for the unsuspecting and trusting souls as pete ham,,,cheers man,,
Pete had so much "insight" in his lyrics.... and yet ended up getting screwed over by another human being because he trusted so much.... If ou listen to the lyrics of this song... Peter had it all figured out.... He is doing okay wherever he is....
So happy somebody found this ..and showed it. GREAT tune from a forgotten band. THANK YOU. i had this album for years, and my favorite song from them. Now I can die in peace.
badfinger848,just checked out danny gatton, the guy is a natural, he was born to play the guitar,,ill be listening some more thats for sure,,at this moment pete ham is playing timeless, and the hairs on the back of my neck are standing on end, very few songs have that effect on me,but this one does it every time,
Gosh this song is really haunting. Pete the Genius. Great guitar work. If he were alive today he would have been among some of the greatest guitar players like Eric Clapton, Slash among others.
One of My most favorite songs....stands tall along many Lennon-mccartney compositions...
I'd searched for this one on youtube as my amplifier is Dead. yep got the original vinyl.
love the "white noise" at the end...seems such gifts of "MIND_HEART_SOUL" come most often at a price. Some of our most gifted troubadors-are in many ways tortured...their open to inspiration and at the same time grief.
At first I thought this was another version from the album. It sounds so clear and powerful. I have a new appreciation for this. This sounds remastered. I hated Molland's synthetic drum triggers on the live version he had released with Rykodisc. This is the s**t!!
I've heard other versions of this tune, but this is by far the best. I've always loved Badfinger from the first time I heard them. Their music seems to get better with age, like fine wine. One of the great and most underrated bands ever.
Let's be thankful for the immense talent and passion these guys put into this song and this album. The outcome was greater than the sum of the parts. This (Ass) was one of the best artistic works of the age. Perhaps what's most popular isn't necessarily the best.
Badfinger was inspired by the Beatles no doubt. I however they are their own genius. Pete's lyrical creations are totally different from any member of the Beatles creations. Badfinger was a unique ROCK band that would have evolved with time to create its own legacy (beyond the legacy they created in their short existence). Beatle copy cats? I don't think so. If one would like to stymie Badfinger's accomplishments by always referring to the Beatles lets say that about all bands following them.
I'd say they were probably more of a parallel to the Beatles. Badfinger was more progressive. Everything the Beatles did, sounded like the Beatles, Badfinger was more versatile. Pete was a true lead guitarist.Harrison was good but Pete was more soulful and could emote through the guitar, like no other guitarist of the day. Timeless is the grandfather and baseline for comparison, of all epic guitar works. I think Pete was ahead of his time. We have no idea what we're missing.
This is eerie. The song was foreseeing the future. I hear one of their songs on the radio al least every other day after all these years! Without Pete and Tom the band was never as popular, and it seemed as though "their time" as a band was over anyway for the new material wasn't "making it." However the songs from "their time" live on to now.
This song gave me chills the first time I heard it on my then-new "Ass" album in 1973, and it still give me chills all these years later. The lyrics are even more poignant now. Pete, you are sorely missed.
Pete Ham was victimized by managers, geedy record companies, and fellow band members. He was the group's best writer who had absolutely no support from anyone around him. I'm surprised he survived as long as he did. I've read Badfinger's story backwards and forwards, and I'm really bitter, concerning how he was treated by Joe Molland; even Tom Evans sided against Ham when it was convenient for him. Read "Without You", by Dan Matovina, and you'll come away from it feeling as bad for Pete as I do.
robharding1957: I'd agree--Pete Ham is one of the finest guitarists I've ever heard!
He's right up there with other underappreciated greats such as Danny Gatton (look him up if you haven't heard of him). In fact, Gatton, like Ham, took his own life (but about 20 years later).
badfinger848...I would agree. I am from Northern Virginia and, when I was in high school and needed to get my Fender Strat set up, my friend was a friend of Danny's. I went to his house and he worked on my guitar! I didn't really know who he was at the time, other than he would hook up with Springsteen when he was in town. I was (and am) also a HUGE Badfinger/Pete Ham fan. And, I actually also wrote a song called "Timeless." Hmmm, lots of coincidences. :-)
OMG!!! I have been huge purveyor of British Rock from this era, and I have never heard this song before until last night!!!!!!!! While I can kick myself for missing out all these years, I actually this it is great I discovered it now. I can now dig and find every Badfinger album and rejoice hearing new "old" music. He's right up there with other underappreciated greats such as Danny Gatton (look him up if you haven't heard of him). In fact, Gatton, like Ham, took his own life (but about 20 years later).

Yeah I agree..... Pete Ham is an excellent guitarist, and way under rated. Gatton is one of my favs too.

badfinger848...I would agree. :-)
