I REALLY don't get this band's appeal. The vocalist misses notes all over the place, I can't even tell what their guitarist is doing and the drum part should be played as repetitive noise for "enhanced interrogation." The only part that seems to have any merit is the accordion (which is a problem in itself). I've tried very hard to figure out what people like about them and I'm starting to think that I simply can't.
Their wackiness, their lyrics, the joy that Birdhouse (the second song) brings, John Linnell's awesome voice, Flansy's crazy screaming, that's what I love about They Might Be Giants. You're entitled to your own opinion, but that's just why TMBG is my favorite band and will always be my favorite band.
Thanks for your reply. That's what most of their fans tell me. I'm all for wacky lyrics but I have to have some idea what they're talking about. I can't figure out what the subject is of hardly any of their songs.
Damn, maybe you're right. I mean, there's no WAY I could have deduced that about someone from a single Youtube comment about musical taste. I wouldn't even know where to begin!
Linnell was always kind of reserved at performances and Flansburgh always jumped around a little more, but recently it's gotten ridiculous. I saw them in September, and they played great, but Flans was just stomping all around the stage yelling random stuff, and Linnell looked positively bored. He seemed to be thinking "All right Flansy, just do whatever you gotta do and I'll just kinda play my keyboard over here." Sad, but at least they're still great.
Now I feel old... everyone keeps commenting that these older clips are from the years when they were born. I remember my sister bringing home a copy of Flood in 1990, then getting Apollo 18 for Christmas in 1992. I was 10 then.

No, actually the worst fucking band that ever existed is the band YOU revere to the point of singing along whenever you hear a melody like in one of their songs.
It still sounds good nomatter how different the key change. It's like that to listening to an 8-Bit Nintendo game from Europe/UK/England compared to here...Same difference, but still kick'n hot!:)
Don't know where this recording came, but this two song set was recorded at Camden Lock in London for a UK television show called 'Rock Steady' in 1990. I know - I saw it live.
haha. This is great. I was in the Marine Corps, love TMBG and listened to these songs in Africa and Persian Gulf all those years ago. Thanks for the post!

I think the instruments they're playing contributes to that, too.
I can imagine how hard it would be to jump around while playing keyboards, or accordion.
92c7a 3 years ago
Well, if he really wanted to be more free-moving he could do what Weird Al did and just get a smaller accordion.
