  • Anybody know who this drummer was? He's got awesome groove.

  • this is REAL music - what kind of losers "disliked" this? It one thing to not like it - different tastes - but to actively "dislike"? You gotta really be fucked up in the game...

  • 最高

  • something not quite right, tempo too fast, ella straining,

    [and i,m a fan]

  • LOVE!

  • Jazz perfection!

  • anyone know who is in the band?

  • so sweet... this song! I love jazz and drummmer, too!

  • Incredible.

  • Its a shame the bass cant hardly be heard :(

  • @vinasandrade Don't worry, I can hear it with my sub-woofer so I'll tell you if it's good . . . . oh my, it is! :)

  • スインギーヴォカールのお手本!~エラ・フィッツジェラルド~1969モントルー~Give Me The Simple Life~サラっとかわす神女 #jazzm

  • I think one of the funniest things about this video is the huge friggin' video camera or whatever. Hahahaha.

  • Hey, not hard for a good drummer.

    Remember how the story goes,

"How do you get to Carnegie Hall"

    Answer, 'practice.'

To be frank, there are many drummers I've worked with and were gone soon, replaced by one with time.

  • Ella is the Boss-

  • Swingin'!

  • God, I've looked so long for this one !

  • @Swingsation65 It also helps a lot that the singer is the definition of vocal clarity.

  • She inspires me with that song.no hater comments

  • @maldarkangel Are you serious? If so, of course it's her real voice. How is that unbelievable? 1969 knew not the horror of auto-tune.

  • @gerbil545 Exactly.

  • How I wish I could have seen her "live"! What a thrill that would have been!

  • Is this her real voice ? no synthesizers or anything ? is this real ? How is this even possible :S?

  • The introduction (drums, then bass, then piano), Ella's lilting voice, the arrangement, the close coordination of all musicians. Thank goodness this utterly amazing performance has been preserved on film. It lifts the spirits.

  • Love it!

  • Incredible!

  • I love her Dress she looks fantastic!!

  • FAMILY GUY BROUGHT ME HERE.

  • Thanks "Family Guy"....NO REALLY, THANKS!!!!

  • @mtreber Absolutley.

  • @mtreber Yeah man, i came here for the same reason!

  • @mtreber "Family Guy"???...ur kidding right!

  • Three people are morons.

  • hmm, I actually think the slower version sounds better...

  • Whenever i listen to this song, I singalong like I've written it! :)

  • Great song but did any1 catch that pyramid In the backround ? Just saying

  • @CmoreBuhts the pyramid is a painted triangle i guess :P

  • There is nobody like and there will not be anybody like Ella. She truly was an American treasure. Pure genius.

  • the earrings swinging: awesome

  • Fantastic song, me and my dad used to listen.

  • Beautiful.

  • why would 3 people dislike this...this song is awesome

  • @propilotcfi Well, you'll always find bad taste everywhere, never mind!

  • simply vibrant and magical ♥

  • I heard this song done with just a big band Orchestra playing it in a 1953 B&W movie "Dangerous Crossing" released by 20th Century Fox. Jean Crane was the star and sometime around 1 hr and 3 minutes she bursts into the Ocean liner's ball room and they played this song and it was such a great arrangement.. I wish they had a post for it on here. But Ella, as always, is excellent!

  • the beginning sounds a bit like "in the mood", doesn't it?

  • Just heard this on the local jazz station and jotted down a memo. Love this clip! I've been in many audiences for both jazz and opera and I can just feel the anticipation in the room as the drummer starts...then the pianist. And then the excitement as the glorious Miss Fitzgerald makes her appearance. Wonderful posting! Thank you!

  • 1969.....I GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL IN 1967 AND DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE WHO THIS WOMAN WAS BACK THEN....INTO THE BEATLES AND THE ROLLING STONES AND JANIS JOPLIN....WAY BACK THEN. BUT TODAY I CAN TELL YOU THAT THIS WOMAN WAS AND IS UNFORGETABLE IN EVERY WAY!!!!!!

  • @irishsetterarchie ...I agree with you on all counts. I'm a 1068 grad. Same musical interests as you at the time. In fact, I saw Ms. Joplin before she was famous....opening for (wait for it....)....Elvis! At the Forum (huge venue). I turned to my friend and remarked, "She is going to be huge!" And she was. She really had the charisma to fill that enormous hall. Now, an old poop, I'm a lover of jazz and a rabid opera fan to boot! Cheers!

  • the greatest vocalist by far ever with the exception of sinatra

  • I LOVE Ella. There will never be another like her. Why couldn't someone from her crew fix her hair before going on stage. Like I said, I love her with all my heart that's why I don't like to see her not look good. Sounds bad, but I don't mean it in a bad way. LOVE YOU ELLA. I'M SURE YOU'RE SINGING IN HEAVEN!!

  • Oh my, Awsomness!

  • I ♥ Ella Fitzgerald ♫ GENIUS! ! ! !

  • june christy's version is good, but this lady has got soul in her voice that can't be matched. yeah ella, whoo!

  • she's wonderful :)

  • Must we always compare? Seesh they are both fantastic versions. This is killer live. June killed it in studio, and Lady Ella put her improv on it. Both rock.

  • Lady Ella! Not much to say except fantastic.

  • I like Ellas other songs too

  • I like this version better than June Christy's version.

    Ella is so creative.

  • Like June Christy's version better!

  • The original was sung by June Christy, however. Also imho, sung much better. Nothing on Ella though..

  • Have i got this right. It was sung better by June Christy?

  • They're totally stylistically different, and yes, in my opinion, June Christy sang it better.

  • Yeaaah! Some people have blood running through their veins..others milk.

  • you don't know what your talking about family guy is the best show ON EARTH

  • i love this song :) but i cnt here it without thinking of family guy xDD lol?

  • Same here. To be honest, if it wasn't for FG, I would never have heard this song. Amazing how contemporary media can sometimes lead us to pleasures of the past.

  • Jazz is the hardest drumming to do, so much sincopation.

  • dam straight the drummer for my band plays with his eyes closed, he says it helps him think

  • Yeah, have to know your drumset very well. I've done it before and you have to have a mental picture of it. I usually hit the rims. But then again, I don't do it often.

  • @The14thZodiac No kidding. I play piano and can PLAY 5/4 time (ala Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" but...can't READ it to save my life! I think many jazz drummers play by feel and intuition. I know many of the old time jazz greats couldn't read a single note of music. What talent!

  • @The14thZodiac ...*syncopation*

  • @The14thZodiac syncopation ;-)

  • @OTIVrecords Yeah, yeah.. Whatever. I was like 13 when I wrote that. Hahaha. :D

  • brilliant

  • EXELENTe!!!!

  • @TheJazzStreet

    More than wonderful!!!!!

  • in brazil say´s MONTREAU

  • how do you pronounce montreux?

  • like mònntruii :')

  • you pronounce it like : mountrou

  • Montr"huh" that's the only sonority in english that comes close to "eu"

not "ou" or "o" or even "i" omg, and you don't pronounce the x a the end of course :)

  • WOW what a voice

  • the one from family guy is song by jamie cullum

  • yea i loved that version...reminded me so much of Ella...actually this is a great version, but the version from 1968 a year prior is smokin....trust me...big band, and top notch recording engineer too...and with Tommy Flannigan conducting the band.

  • I'm sure Jamie would be sad to hear he was confused with a WOMAN singing. The version heard on Family Guy "Mother Tucker" was sung by the great June Christy, who was known for her work with the Stan Kenton Band. Other notable Kenton associates were the Four Freshmen, who recorded the tune on their album "Four Freshmen and Five Trumpets" back in 1957.

  • I thought it was June Christy on Family Guy

  • ya the one on family guy was june christy listen to hers and cullums and see which one sounds like the one on the show

  • It was

  • OMg..she's already in her 50s when singing this. Still so full of life when she sang.. exceptional. who else can compare?

  • thank u

  • Just heard on Family Guy...guess I'm not alone.

  • me too... lol

  • lol same thing here.

  • totally

  • found this song while looking for the one in fam guy :D

    I don't believe in frettin' and grievin';

    Why mess around with strife?

I never was cut out to step and strut out.

    Give me the simple life.

Some find it pleasant dining on pheasant.

    Those things roll off my knife;

    Just serve me tomatoes; and mashed potatoes;

    Give me the simple life.

  • The version in family life is by June Christy

  • Me too, then I just started singing it all the time. :)

  • the jazz festival was it? didnt know they had it in the 60s too..

  • brilliant

  • Get the TV camera at 1.40 - looks as though it was home made! great song, though.

  • I like the Julie London one better, even though the scatting was amazing

  • She remains the standard to measure brilliance. She was a genius.

  • She was just a wondeful singer! and made american music worth a lot!

  • It s a pity that i have the bimbo's Paris Hilton and Nicole before my eye when i hear this song.... but its a good song and scat!
