I always associate this song with post-apocalyptic scenarios, zombie apocalypse,The Stand,Max Max,etc.Someday I'll direct an epic apocalyptic film and this song will play in the opening scene:-P
This song frightened the wits out of me when i was a kid -- I thought it was really going to happen and we were soon going to vanish and be on the moon. hehe
On long time ago I realized that the only way this song makes any sense is as an inside trade joke. I am sorry that breaks the spell of all that faux symbolism, but that is what was needed to pull it off in the 60's. Imagine a backroom scene: A: 'It used to be so easy to write a hit, all you had to do is rhyme June, Moon and Spoon and Voila! A Hit.' B: 'Still works' A: 'Sure ... what to you want to bet on it' B: (wager of your choice here) A: 'You're on!' .... 'A' lost the wager as we see.
how ironic that when you look at the politicos, most of them are so high on stuff they're moon walking. Can we have a song about the rest of us Mr King? Just kidding, you sang for us all and made a lot of people happy and smile. Best wishes wherever you are.
i worked with johnathan king many years ago,i was lead vocals with my band,we were on tour supporting the silver sixties tour, this song is a classic, everyone knows what jonathan was found guilty of,and personally i would rather wipe away any memory of working with him,but you have to seperate man from tune, this tune will always be one of the best, and i still perform it today
@josh50ism Couldn't agree more, this song always fills me with nostalgia, it was a major hit in June '65 as I was about to leave school.Marlene Dietrich said at the time it was a fabulous song and melody.Say what you like about him, never did care for him even at the height of his fame, it really is a beautiful arrangement .
To My Resplendent Wife, Barbra. I hope when we meet in Heaven, this is one of the first songs we hear. In the two years we were married, we never danced. Time went by too quickly. Now, you are gone to your Heavenly home. Wait for me there. I love you until Time is no more. We will dance and sing for all eternity, My True and Eternal Love, Barbra.
You really can and really should distinguish the art from the artist. This is a nice, elegiac song, good enough in it's own right. If you can, have a listen to what Nina Simone did with it. She found depth and layers in it that you can never guess existed from this gentle version.
When JFK announced to the world that America was going to the Moon most people became very excited because even though going to the Moon was still 'impossible' the world knew that if anyone could really go to the Moon it was America. Yet still there were those who believed that we should first spend our way out of all our social problems here on Earth first (as if that were possible) and that space exploration was a waste of money. Today we call these idealists liberals This song is about that
I was 9 in 1965 when this song came out-the song has always stayed in my mind, however I did not know that Johnathan King sang it. Thanks for posting. ahhhhhh those wonder years of the sixties.
@09bnunez did you know he discovered the group Genesis-- and gave them their name? He had a lot of hits through other groups that people do not realize that he was involved with/
Gosh... all time favorites and great memories... found this CD at a old store and bought for a fren living in NZ... he is a fan of his song... Thanks for loading this for all viewers....
Nice song. Big ears. I have a "thing" about ears, especially the single exposed ear by girls with long hair. Is that supposed to be sexy, ladies, like the hair hanging over one eye? Makes me think of the expression, "sheeple." A local TV anchor-lady had her long, blonde hair behind her large ears that stuck out like moth wings! Don't know how much news I missed because of the distraction.
What a unique and exceptional song; it caught my attention because it was so unique and it sounded wonderful. The more I listened to this song; the more I loved it. It was different and I like that immensely. Thanks for this great post.
My Dad calls the 1960's "The Wonder Bread Years" when space exploration was a dream of America, when President Kennedy talked about the hope and the promise of things come! This was one of his favorite songs of the 1960s! He said it was great sitting in his classroom along with his teacher and classmates watching the American astronauts land on the moon and Neil Armstrong the first man to take the first step on the moon! "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind!" JK's Masterpiece!
@starblue1986 I went to school in the same era in another decade johnathan king had an am radio show that my father listrened to he wasnt aware that jonathan made records swo i played this for him
@starblue1986 I am probably about the same age as your Dad and I also recall watching the rocket liftoffs and spacewalks on TV in school.... but Neil Armstrong walked on the moon at 11pm on July 20, 1969, so we weren't watching that one in class. I actually recorded the event live off the TV with my little taperecorder.... and still have the tape. Ah, those Wonder Bread Years... "Building strong bodies 12 way". Those were good old days.
What strikes me most in this song are the strings. You can hear them very well and every time they play a melody as if something is falling down from the sky...A bit strange though!
AbsolutIely a song to remember ... '65 was still such an innocent era in many ways ...
... and this song didn't give me then tooooo much of the words meanings, yet I remember 1st hearing it was through a transitor radio as I was sitting on a field where poppies heads were swaying in the summer breeze... very enjoyable.
5 stars for this terrific share ... thanks from Budapest
thanks so much for posting this. I first heard this in 1967? and really enjoyed it. Didn't hear anything more from Jon King, and wondered what happened. Guess he was a one-hit wonder, but what a great one!
Soundof7,thanks for a great song, but the political rubbish and sad images have nothing to do with this song, you took a beautiful song and make it something it never was,you took away the innocence that this song talked of, the line hands that can only hold a spoon was of a young child not yet able to hold the spoon, not a poor child starving, can't wait to see that you have done to Wonderful World,Imagine,My Sweet Lord, Hound Dog. or Amazing Grace, your slime
@JJMFB1 Interestingly enough, I think you're wrong The song is beautiful, yes. But I don't think it ever had all the innocence you attribute to it. Pay attention. Many of the images are quite...jarring. More so when set to that gorgeous music and sung by that voice (mmm. that voice.). In your defense, I will say that music is the most subjective thing in the world.
@JJMFB1 I always took this song to be a commentary on the failings and contradictions of modern life and doubt it was intended to be "beautiful" in an innocent way. It reminds me of when you used to hear comments that began with "If they can put a man on the moon, why can't they .... " . Love it or hate it, this is not optimistic in the way that "What a Wonderful World" was; it's a little jaded. The "beautiful music" arrangement symbolizes the anesthetizing effect of modern conveniences.
Chicago-1965.Young kid walking home from Keeler Park looking at the gi-normous fall moon and this song came on the radio.I had no inkling as to what this song was about-I just associated it with the moon.Haven't heard it in decades-thanks for the post !

I know that in the 1960's when the Space Program was at its height, people would gather round there TV sets and watch the latest event. So much that everything else would be temporarily ignored. It brought folks together around the world, the young, the old, enemy and friend alike, even arms that could only lift a spoon.
I remember this in 1965 listening to it on a small cruiser which took us out for a trip from Clacton round the Pirate radio ships Caroline and London which really started all the "pop revolution" on Radio. Quite a few of the Pirate " DJ's" actually migrated to "main stream" Radio Stations....
There was stereo in those days. For a long time it was considered more of a gimmick than a recording art. On some early recordings, tracks were acrobatically bounced from channel to channel just to demonstrate the effect. Stereo 45's didn't become commonplace until 1968. Also, when studio time was big money, it was faster and therefore cheaper to just throw a mono mix together than a stereo one.
I took a different meaning from this song. The moon just reflects the light of the sun. It produces nothing of its own. We have become complacent in, and dependent on the trappings of our cultures and technologies. These things comprise the "moon" that stands between us and the sun, the true source of life. Okay, it's late, I'm babbling, and tomorow I will read this and wonder what I was thinking. LOL
I have to boycott this dude this fella here makes a claim in his autobiography' 65 My Life So Far' that implies that John Lennon is a closet homosexual/bisexual can you imagine that?
@skeaneable I think he really meant to say bisexual, Lennon had well known experimental relationships with The Beatles first bassist and good friend Stu Sutcliff and Beatles manager Brian Epstein.
A sadly true message with beautiful melody and singing. Many people remain very alone; due to a lifestyle that is only chased, as a fantasy. Debt is only stabbed at with a short-penknife, though amidst handfulls of money. Never home. Tunnel vision of the chase, as the lifestyle, is as attainable as going to the moon. The expense of the moon has been achieved on a govern level, but while our children are starving to death on our planet. Support of fiction costs more than reality and peace. Sissy
I don't think this song is about space travel. There was a lot going on when I was growing up in the 60's-Nam,civil rights, police brutality,etc.,etc.No,I think it's a generation gap song (the sun people and the moon people).I think it's a song that reflected the changes going on at the time and the changes yet to come.
Classic 1960s song, Everyone's Gone To the Moon by Johnathan King. Beginning of the space age with tel star launched in 1960 to first landing on the moon in 1969 this became a hit 1965 and captures the dream of 1960s of space exploration to the moon and beyond!
Lyric phrases abbreviated: Streets full ....all alone = social isolation Roads ... home = no family life Church .... tune = Discordant religion Everyone's gone to the moon = We’re all going mad ! Eyes ... wet = So much crying - no more tears Hands ...debt =People spending what they borrow Sun ... June =Crazy English weather? Long .... sun =We were not always so materialistic Cars ... green =Crazy excess. mouths ... cream = Gluttony, while…. Arms .... spoon = Famine
Mesmerizing......enchanted. Virtual one hit wonder. It doesn't even MATTER that Jonathan only had this one tune. It is so unique, so beautiful. It occupies it's own space and time. You might Listen to Peter Satstedt..."Where Do You Go To".Also a fantastic tune.
This is one of the most beautiful song i've ever heard, it brings such childhood memories, it has that melancholic character to it . A beautiful melody with an orchestra of strings which gives richness to the sound this is a classical in pop music.
Nice song, but he's got huge ears. Funny how many people, especially women, with big, ugly ears insist on showing them off. There was a local TV anchor-
woman who had her blonde hair tucked behind her ears that stuck out like moth wings. When I remarked about it to my hairdresser sister, she said that was one of her customers! };-[ Well, I couldn't take it back! (Montgomery, AL)
Who was that yodeling cowboy who also did "Paloma Blanca?" The D.J. who replaced me at WSBB, New Smyrna Beach, FL used to play that almost every morning, back in the '60's or "70's.
Whenever I hear this song I'm transported right back to 1965. Whatever your views are about Jonathan King this song is quite simply magical. I absolutely love it and always will.
Splendid and beautiful! Innocent yet naive, what more that brought me back to memories. How I remember kindness? in the eyes of every hearts. No time-line was ever heard of!
I had graduated High School and was at a crossroads in my life. I had friends that were dying in Viet Nam and I was undecided as to what I wanted to do with my life. I spent time sitting on the corner under a street light watching crickets and June bugs listening to a radio and this one of the songs that reminds me of that time. Thanks for posting this.
@RJiminez51 Yes I hear it. I'm a bassist. But let me say that it also might B a splice. In that day edits were done to analog tape w/ a razor blade! They would have made the splice be4 the strings were added. The rhythm section arrangement may have changed. &instead of rerecording it, they just took out (or added in)a piece of the song from somewhere else. It was done all the time. You've got sharp ears my friend!
1965- First Ford GT, Bandstand in LA, some kind of visible televison camera change, My Guy, Red Rubber Ball, Glenn's gone to Phoenix. Scott Carpenter, Jimmy Clarks Lotus. Sixth grade. I was 11, and it flew past.
People have become too darn greedy. This song takes you to a better time when we did not have so many taxes.Everyone had a goal and purpose other than drugs sex and rock and roll.
I always associate this song with post-apocalyptic scenarios, zombie apocalypse,The Stand,Max Max,etc.Someday I'll direct an epic apocalyptic film and this song will play in the opening scene:-P

Such a pretty song here and there and so much rubbish too. A truly mad genius.

LOL

I have to boycott this dude this fella here makes a claim in his autobiography' 65 My Life So Far' that implies that John Lennon is a closet homosexual/bisexual can you imagine that?
skeaneable 1 year ago

This song reminds me of high school 1965 when our local radio station disc jockey played it at our varsity dance.
The words seem to apply more to today than back then if you think about it. Like rows full of houses, never home. Or the references to green.
Or hands full of money , all in debt.

You've got sharp ears my friend!

that is so true, back then the flaws became part of the beauty. it is still one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard.
