Actually, the predecessors of the W124 count as the E-Class. So the W123, W115, W114, and below are the E-Class. The same applies to the C-Class, whos predecessors are the W201 190-series.

what i ment is, in today's standards, the w123 etc is the E-Class, although technically it isn't called the "E-Class". Its just now you can call a W123 an E-Class, and a W201 a C-Class, the C123 Coupe a CLK-Class, A C126 Coupe A CL-Class, etc.
