  • Hats off to prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Slow and steady always wins the race.

  • i think it is important to find a system that works, pragmatism and logic should always supercede dogma

the greatest good for the greatest number

that makes me and mills utilitarians

  • It is a nice compilation (as expected) fro PBS, but I have a complain though.

No one needs to be rocket scientist to know that turning country's economics upside down is not an economics decision, but political. Being an Indian I know how chaotic was/is the situation. I will give greater credit to P V Narasimharao, than Manmohan Singh. It is sad to see that PBS didn't even mention his name once, perhaps interviewees put those conditions. Sad and painful really!

  • @BuntyK PV is a maverick !!

  • time to dig up refugees camp for ur fellow porkis

  • Gr8 Man. Respect him immensely. If it wan not for him we would be a beggar country with idiots like advanis ruling us!

  • How ignorant are you? The congress supported socialism since forever. The had to liberalize out of compulsion and because of pressure from IMF and World Bank.

The Indian right wing wanted a free economy since 1940s. Go and read about S.P.Mookerji. If we never had the congress, and people like S.P.Mookerji, Vajpayi and Advani were in charge, we wouldn't have had socialism and poverty. India saw more liberalization during Vajpayi govt. than ever. Go read history moron!

  • all the best india, may god bless india, and indians, thank u MR. PRIME MINISTER and FIANANCE MINISTER, may god give u more power to creat POWERFUL INDIA.

  • Only through liberty! Something most of this world is lacking!

  • paki suaar!

  • lol

  • go back to your bankrupt country that survives on hand outs just like you pakis in england live on benifits. You nothing but vermin on the world

  • I see some commanting poverty is not reduced at all it is not true . India's is growing at 8-9% in G.D.P figures .but decline in poverty is only 1%-2% that not a bad number(Dr singh is tring to achive 3% poverty reduction every year) if you take over all 1/3 people are poor it will take another 20-25 years to address these issues(but Dr singh want to achive this by 2020-2025 less than 10 to 15 years).

  • per capita income is doubling every ten years!

  • chup oye fudu, we dont need to learn from a paki, whats better for us or not

  • what a great contribution, Dr Manmohan singh has brought to india. Thank you!

  • governments should be the policemen of the free market... nothing more, nothing less... just act when needed and don't finger the economy too much either... keep tabs and hold bigshots accountable... so that we don't get another harshad mehta... India is well on this path and just wait and see how we improve over the next 10 years... I hope Congress doesn't mess it up... they have the right formula as of now

  • The simple fact of the matter is that India is slowly becoming more free market oriented, and this is raising the standard of living of the average indian, and this is nothing but a positive development. And it is not possible for the average standard of living to rise without it helping the poor. In all advanced countries the poor are better off. It is because of people like you that countries like India have been poor so long.

  • @jackson32 thank you a mixed economy works when it realizes market forces are like a force of nature not theoretical talk points

  • The chinese give producers rebate to exporters to sell goods below production cost, and keep the yaun fixed between exchange rate ensure a hidden traiff on foriegn goods. Its never as freemarket as people think your comment is correct

  • Your afraid to debate me because you don't have the facts on your side. I consider this debate a complete rout, your just another product of the government indoctrination schools, your not intelligent enough to see through all the lies you've been told.

Oh now I see, your one of these people who have been brainwashed for what passes as economics in our brainwashing schools. Let me ask you some questions. Are you a Keynesian? Do you believe government should be involved in the economy because the free-market is flawed? Have you ever even heard of Austrian economics? It will be a pleasure for me to see you show your ignorance.

India per capita GNP is only about $4000. The poverty line in the US is around $15000 so you are wrong again. They may be hard working and skilled, and they are going in the right direction, it's just that wealth and capital build up does not happen overnight. The middle class in India is not financially secure, not in any sense we are used to, you don't what your talking about.

  • pm2324

I used the US, Canada and Hong Kong, to show what has happened in countries that have had a relatively free-market for a while so as to illustrate how those countries turned out. China particularly, now has more economic freedom than either the US or Canada. That is why their growth rate is much higher. The only way for a society to prosper is for the government to get out of the way with less taxes, less spending, less regulations and bad laws.

  • pm2324

About China, it's laughable how uninformed you are. China is one of the least regulated markets in the world. And that is a good thing. Independent monetary policy? The Chinese have raging inflation, much higher than in the west, this is a big weakness, not a strength. And they made a mistake in taking on so many US dollars which they will end up getting only a fraction of the value back.

  • Wage disparties happen when you allow markets to take over its the most efficent use of resources, but when your a poor country with 70% in poverty there no black or white solution to fix the problems. Communism failed because of no incentive to innovate, and states never understand supply and demand, but the state can provide social benefits like Germany.

  • Right after independence, I believe that India needed socialism at first because the poorest needed to feel that they weren't being left behind. Now the country's political roots are secure and it is time for India to shine in the competitive global economy. But the poor of the country must never be left behind.

  • Free Trade is good for a economy it brings higher quality goods into the marketplace. Free Market does not mean Anglo Style or Scandivian Style captialism. Still, traiffs and import controls on economies you end up with shotty producers with high traiffs and the comsumer pays more for inferior goods.

Yet, workers should not end up dead on the job because of the lack safety and health regulations. Moderation is key.

  • This idea that we should not go too far in the direction of the free-market so as not to hurt the poor is fallacious. In the countries that have gone the farthest in the direction of the free-market, the US, Canada, Hong Kong, etc., the poor in these countries are much better off than the middle class in 3rd world countries that have not given their people economic freedom. Economic freedom that is good in small doses, is much better in larger doses.

  • there's a next level past capitalism - people who believe in free markets but don't use that as an excuse to watch poor people starve.

  • I never used economic liberalism as an excuse to ignore poverty/starvation/suffering in the third world, nor do I view it as the fundamental cause. Rather, nation states which implement market reforms along with stable public social services will greatly reduce such ills within their respective societies, just as the developed world already has.

  • sounds like we have no choice. do you believe we have no choice but to obey the market?

  • Market forces can be regulated effectively, but only to a certain degree. The concept of supply and demand, as well as self interest have defined human economic interaction throughout history. Indeed it has been those governments who have attempted to resist market forces (historically India, the former Soviet Bloc, China during the Maost era etc) who have allowed their countries to suffer the most economic hardship.

  • there's got to be a better solution than joining up with the system that caused these problems in the first place.

  • Free market economics are not responsible for poverty. Poverty has existed throughout the whole of human history - and in the modern age predominantly within closed, isolated, heavily centralized and backward economies.

Liberalization is the answer, countries must allow individuals to pursue their own economic self interest within a free market to maximize innovation, efficiency, growth and gross output.

  • The free market isn't responsible for global poverty. Economic poverty has existed throughout the whole history, found predominantly in the modern era within centrally planned, isolated, backward and protectionist economies.

Liberalization opens up markets, allows investment to enter the market in question, promotes innovation and most importantly allows self-interested individuals to pursue their own interests.

  • I don't trust this guy ... free trade helps rich people more than anybody else.

  • I think free trade is a better option than what we had in the 70s and 80s

  • maybe so, i don't live in india. globalization has worked wonders for the u.s. economy .... that doesn't mean everyone should do as the u.s. does

  • yes but our economy was in the toilet before we liberalized it

  • Only a genius could turn India away from the economic mudslide that it was getting into.

  • brilliant to say the least..he is india's most educated Prime Minister to date

  • a brilliant man proud that we had a prime minister like him.

  • i agree with you
