He's really good, but there'll never be another SRV or Hendrix, so he better get workin on his own voice... although he definitely has a running head start on 90% of guitarists out there today!
Great player, but he was more "ahead of the curve" @15 than here @17. The older you get, the harder it is to be "good for your age". By the time you're 23, there's no such thing. Ricky's 20 soon, he's got 3+yrs of woodshedding before the world cuts him no slack: You don't become the next SRV by playing SRV. Throw out those riffs & see what's left: That's who you are. Work on that. You can bring some of this stuff back in as appropriate after a stronger individual identity is established.
@kyle: Not what I meant. As a kid, I learned Bloomfield,Beck,Clapton, Green, Rush, Guy, the Kings, etc. It got me in decent bands. Few years later, when recording contracts were the issue, sounding too much like my influences became a negative: No contract. // A famous example w/a happier ending: Dylan hired Bloomfield to play on "Highway 61", Bob told Mike: "I don't wanna hear any of that BB King shit". Which is what Mike played at the time. But he took the next step, & became an original.
@lazur1 Yup! 100% u need to come outt'a that. and...believe what u do. thats original. fuck the world, and train urself. self taught with a perfect guidance can result in a master piece.
