  • to tell the truth he was good at both jobs. just at a crappy time

  • I don't see why people think it's so bad. Ya, his pattern gets reversed a lot, but overall for a non-musician I'd say it was pretty darn good. He knew the piece really well - even gave cues - and he was enthusiastic and looked like the music. A big part of being a conductor is being a "cheerleader." He didn't just beat beats, he actually felt the music and showed it. This is a patriotic song, and that's exactly how his conducting would have made me feel if I were playing.

  • not to be a pretentious musician, but his pattern's backwards most of the time and it physically hurts me to watch it :p lol

  • Pretty good job-of course, the band is known as "the President's own" As an aside, Presidents and their administartions have to be over for at least FIFTY YEARS before historians can judge their quality.

  • @sumoldfool Not really. Every president since and including Hoover has stunk to high heaven.

  • @Luneleger EVERY President ?? Both Parties ??Hard to believe. Think you need to read up a little more.

  • @sumoldfool Hard to believe. You crack me up.

  • Good job President Bush - sure miss you - not sure we can withstand much more of the idiot we now have in the White House.

  • LOL he's hitting them with it!!!!!

  • oh suck it! Bush kept us safe and is ten times the man Clinton and hobo-bama will ever be.

  • The band didn't stop when he cut off at 1:42

  • It's amazing how few comments here actually relate to the subject of the video...GWB's conducting. There was a bit of discussion about the meter. "Stars And Stripes" is definitely in "2" and he IS conducting in "2".

However, he is conducting backwards. His downbeats are upbeats and his upbeats are downbeats. I've always thought he was dyslexic, anyway.

  • I feel like the biggest idiot for forgetting the song name that Bush is conducting.

  • I MISS HIM NOW.....

  • I don't even agree with everything the man did as president (signing a bill to raise the minimum wage, for example), but he was a half decent president. As far as the iraq war goes (and I'm somewhat against it) he did the best he could with the information he had. P.S. was Bush a musician or did he take some kind of crash course for conducting lol?

  • From a musician's standpoint......This video is hilarious

  • You missed Reagan

  • .......awesome.

  • Lydon B. Johnson as strong?? More like naive. Also under Kenedy might as well put "player"

  • @TheMichiganfan39 thats not johnson, its FDR bonehead

  • Comment removed

  • @TheMichiganfan39 How can you mistake FDR for LBJ. There's no way you're a real American.

  • @zmurrey

Sorry I wasn't alive during that time period. I don't think you should be deciding who is a real and not a real American. I was born in this country and am a US Citizen and your trying to tell me I'm not a true American? I could say the same about you. Nice comment idiot

  • @TheMichiganfan39 "Sorry I wasn't alive during that time period."

I wasn't alive during the French Revolution but I know about it.

  • @JumpStartation

You are correct. But if I was alive during that time period I would know more about LBJ and FDR then what I do right now. LBJ was a bad president regardless

  • @TheMichiganfan39 That was FDR and he wasn't strong enough to walk. JFK wasn't so smart as he was a skirt chaser. W was the son of a President, born in Connecticut, Harvard and Yale grad, who milked a phony country boy image to win the Texas governorship because daddy knew southern governors do well in presidential elections. That is why W's brother became governor of Florida. Daddy Bush's plan worked for the most part and prince W got elected twice to be President. Bro never got to play prez.

  • @Luneleger mmmmm

  • @TheMichiganfan39 wow, sad

  • Hey who ever thinks that bush was the worst president... ONE WORD. Vanburien

  • It's like Mr. Bean! Except Mr. Bean is much more intelligent.

  • @Typet360 Mr. Bean couldn't hold W's jock. Piss off puke1

  • OH MY GOD CHILL WITH THE POLITICS!!!!!! EVERY VIDEO THAT HAS EITHER A POLITICAL LEADER IN IT IS ALWAYS FULL OF ARGUMENTS THAT OFTEN HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST WATCH THE VIDEO AND COMMENT ON IT, WHEN DID THAT BECOME SO HARD?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?! just saying...

  • I LOVE watching people mock conductors and they do it wrong it looks so funny =)... you go down...in...out...up....down...in...out....up..=)

  • Comment removed

  • @jwpolar The National March Is in 2/2 meter (cut time) or 6/8 meter, therefore the conducting pattern would be a 2/4 meter conducting pattern. Usually In..Out..In..Out with a sligh curve. Not Down...In...Out..Up.. that would be a 4/4 meter conducting pattern.

  • @8jazzlover bam!!! way to make the "im so smart guy" sound, well, not as smart as you! lol dang i miss high school band :(

  • @gojohnson48 Don't get upset:) I'm wasn't trying to make you sound "not as smart."

  • @8jazzlover i think i just replied to my comment lol i was just stating that i agreed with what you said towards jwpolar lol i played this in band and knew it was the up down up down pattern, i think it was cut time, but what do i know anymore! the missing band part was just something else, nothing to do with what you said :)

  • @gojohnson48 haha, it wasnt me, i knew it was cut time, i played it in band a few years back, the part about missing band had nothing to do with your comment haha just stating that i agreed with what you said about your comment to the jwpolar dude lol

  • That is one hell of a band to play so well even with that kind of conductor...

  • He is a president and does not need to think.. That is why he sucks as a conductor

  • ignoring all of your uneducated political arguments(which is hard for me since none of you have your facts straight)

i lol'd at how bad he was at conducting them, like at 1:43

  • I hope you guys do realize that he probably is a better president than conductor. If you say that, then you know nothing about music.

  • what's the composition called? btw I'm not American, I'm Czech but the way I see dear mr. Bush, he's clown for me :-) I do like Obama though ;-)

  • @uhlord its called stars and stripes forever.

  • Kennedy was smart? No offense to the guy, but he was horrible. Proof---Bay of Pigs and the Orange Bowl

Our President now things that there are 57 states in the country and that socialism is the key to saving us; the one before Bush 43 thought it was okay to have an affair and lie about it.

After thinking about that, having a President who knows how to have fun and conduct a band isn't such a bad thing.

  • I think you're mischaracterising the presidents. Nixon would've been charged had the pardon not been controversially issued by Gerald Ford. Reagan ruined the American economy through deregulation of the banks and reaganomics. Bush is self explanatory. There really hasn't been a good president since FDR.

  • @PostalTubeAlex

i couldn't ignore your comment... if you want to talk about destroying the economy don't blame Nixon, and don't call FDR a good president. look up the numbers for the long term social security and Medicare/Medicaid deficit and tell me FDR was a good president.FRD did what was, and will be beneficial for a few more years to come, but long term it was a very bad mistake.

  • @letters129 I didn't blame Nixon for ruining the economy, I implied he was a criminal.

  • Shit. I hate that bastard. But he did a pretty good job of pretending to conduct! Damn. They can teach a retarded moron anything I guess.

  • Anyone who has ever actually been in a symphonic band or orchestra knows that this is not very good conducting. At about 1:44 he is actually telling the band to stop playing.

  • OOOOLE MATAOOOR OOOOOLE

  • wow you people need chill. yeah he conducted it. but case and point he sucked at it. you don't have to have musical training to be a good conductor. Danny Kaye was a singer and dancer yes, but did he ever conduct? no. watch the video of him conducting the ny philharmonic, he's amazing. if you don't have the knowledge you can at least feel the music and feel the beat.

bush has no sense of tempo, rhythm or beat. he tried. i'll give him that.

  • why is it almost every time you hear a crowd start to clap to music, they almost always start to go waaaaay to fast?

  • HA,HA,HA....Epic win of a Fail!!!...nananana

  • Well, at least he gets the basic idea, and gets the tempo right by the end of the piece.

  • JFK smart? well that's debatable.

  • Bless his heart, W is having fun, isn't he? Probably thinks he's really conducting them.

  • Good to see.

  • BTW

that guy at the end has the best fro i have ever seen in my entire life

  • Pretty Good!

  • he's pretty darn good

  • Iq23dg...no YOU SIR ARE AN IDIOT. sAYING George Bush is an idiot. Did you ever consider the BS that Clinton pulled? Or Carter? To say GW is stupid at anything? Jimmy Carter got us the Iran deal we have now. And did you consider the difference in recording and the visual? The music doesn't fit the conducting. I've seen other Videos of the same situation and Bush conducts perfectly. Anyone that says Bush is an idiot is a fool and ignorant.

  • i love you

i really didn't know there were anything but liberals on youtube, or, rather, the internet

our socialist president will surely fuck us over... but no, he will be remembered as 'the great AFRICAN AMERICAN' president for years to come

and bush... get off his back... he certainly didn't screw the country up in his 8 years in office as bad Jobama did in his first year

  • There are a few conservatives on the net. They usually don't bother to aruge with fools however I find it entertaining to confront them with the truth. I'm a USAF vet and proud of it. Also proud of the USMC band, the President's Own. IF Bill Clinton were conducting it he'd want the phone numbers of the female Marines immediately. Obama is a socialist through and through. So is his ilk in the Congress Pelosi and Reid. And of course Gay guy Mrs. Barney Frank. God help this nation.

  • I'm interested in hearing your definition of socialism. And how does Barney Frank being gay affect this nation? I'm having trouble understanding your argument. What truths do you wish to present?

  • you are the fool.

you take your news from one source only.

you believe your one and only source to be the "true" news

and when anyone presents you with actual facts you ignore them and declare that only you know the "truth"

and why the hell does the USAF need a vet?

do you take care of the carrier pigeons?

  • Your Mother should have aborted you when you were still in her womb. You are the idiot. not me.

  • and i was always under the impression that conservatives

    resented abortion.

    apparently not.

maybe you should check what your party does and does not support before you call anyone else an idiot, you dumbass

  • a USAF vet is a veteran..not a veterinarian!

  • totally true. Nicely said!!!

  • @measless---

You didn't know there were anything but liberals on the Internet?!?! Where do you think people go these days to fear the Freemasons, rant about how oppressed they are because it's rude to wish Jews and Muslims a Merry Christmas, and swap photoshopped UFO pictures?!?!

    : ) TGF

  • Pathetic remarks. You are a total wretch making this thing..Bill Clinton a good President? Get a life. Jimmy Carter...and now the biggest worst liar of them all Mr. Obama...

  • you sir are an idiot.

Bill Clinton was not in the video, nor was Jimmy Carter. Either your rant is either incoherent so everyone misses it's point or just a dumbass and can't tell the difference between JFK and Jimmy Carter

  • @1q23dg Not being able to tell America's greatest hero between America's worst president would be very idiotic of him. So i agree.

  • @292x1

    Amen!

  • At least to non- musicians, he looks like he knows what he's doing. He sold it well. You know, even Obama scratches his head sometimes and looks like an idiot. You'll never see a picture of it though because he's a democrat, and apparently that makes all the difference. Haha the democrat party is nothing more than a fassion statement to me with all this "hope" and little O pins flying around. Ha I guess that's what wins elections now days instead of actual politics.

  • and theres people who actually think that obama is the messiah.... oh god....

  • I bet all the individuals posting all these nasty comments about president Bush have never done anything positive for this country. All your good for is sitting back and critizing,But don't worry now you have a president who will be there with you sitting back doing nothing positive for this country. And yes, before you ask, I have served my country, have fought in Iraq, and would do it all over again for President Bush.

  • President Bush did the best thing he could under the situation. If we didn't go to war and another 9/11 happened, people would blame him for that to. People are always looking for someone to blame.

  • Bush didnt really expect any of this, I mean he just thought he would be an average president like his father. Then 9/11 happened and he put all his concentration and resources to keep the country safe. He was fixated on it, and because of this I will always like him. Cant wait for his book to come out!

  • @nndnfasn Should really be blaming themselves...If they really want to change the world then they should do something too...

  • hahaha!!!!!!!Awesome!!

  • how can this guy crack jokes and carry on with humor all the time with over 4000 people have died because of him....

  • I'd say more then 4000 :).

  • How can you smile in this statement?

  • 4000 people? Try 100,000. Iraqis are people too. Wars affect two sides of a conflict and the civilians caught inbetween.

  • O god...He's horrible.....

  • lol, he can't even keep a basic 2 beat pattern. :P

The only way this didn't completely fail is that the principal trumpet did his job.

  • how do you keep a straight face being conducted that way??? Props to the piccolos who finished successfully!!!

  • He can now look for another gig now...good bye Mr. Bush. Thanks for the memories. Any good ones?

  • good job Mr.President

  • I think he did a very good job. I don't know how many times he has had an oppurtunity to conduct, but he was on the beat (he conducted in in tempo at a meter of 2/4) He knew when each little thing was supposed to happen, and he added his own feeling into the piece. I don't really see why people were laughing. It was a good performance. sigh... people just don't know what it's like to conduct.

  • That's awesome!!!

  • The Stars and Stripes Forever is the official march of the United States of America. When played (especially by the Marine Band) it should garner respect and pride. Leave it to Bush to make a mockery out of it. I can't believe he turned it into a comedy routine - getting laughter from the audience and all. His "conducting" was unrehearsed and unprofessional. John Philip Sousa (composer & former Marine Band director) is rolling in his grave!!

  • People like John Philip Sousa were obviously patriotic men. If the president were to conduct his piece, he would be honored. Even a child could conduct it. The orchestra does all the work anyway. Marches are the most easy to conduct and usually does not need a conductor. I saw a Colonel conduct this same piece to a professional orchestra. He was off by 1 1/2 beats about twenty measures in to the piece and did not realise it. He was just feeling the music (which is the composers intent!)

  • Since when is the Stars andStripes Forever the official March of the USA? Which congressional Act states that? And I can assure you that GW DID have a rehearsal. And you are jealous because none of the liberals,..ala Clinton, Obama, Carter..and the other holligans in Congress..like abortion loving Ted Kennedy...would have the balls to conduct a great band like the USMC band. Get a life. Commie!

  • How about getting your facts straight before you post? Allow me to assist...

The U.S. Code contains the Federal Laws of the United States as adopted by Congress and signed by the President. Title 36 Chapter 10, Paragraph 188 reads, "The composition by John Philip Sousa entitled ''The Stars and Stripes Forever'' is hereby designated as the national march of the United States of America."

  • Abortion and musical training are unrelated, by the way. I can assure you that President Clinton would have done a fine job conducting if given the opportunity. He actually had years of music instruction and was a talented saxophone player. Perhaps he didn't express interest so as not to take away from the dignity and professionalism of the Marine Band. Note the word "professional". The director of the USMB is a professional musician.

  • The director of the USMB is a professional musician, and Bush is a professional politician. It's not about "having the balls" as you said, it's about someone with no formal training or experience attempting to do the job of a professional. The laughter from the audience says it all.

  • As a musician, i can guarantee you that they are probably NOT having the time of their lives.

  • I'd be laughing my off is I was being directed by one of the dumbest presidents in US history...come on, imagine his facial expressions...let alone the silly motions with the baton. Ahh, well, either way, he's a failure at what he does, period.

  • you are ridiculous bandiegeek09. the man is a politician not a musician. I guarantee you'd suck at being a politician. Probably because you can't see what he's doing

He is having a good time with a group of people. Those in that band were having the TIME OF THEIR LIVES...they were conducted by the man they've SWORN TO PROTECT with their LIVES. That would put nothing but joy in my heart to have him conduct my band

  • No I would say the man SUCKS equally at both, Good god the timing and form of the conducting was god awful, I am sure that any high school band member or college grad student could have done better than that mess of hand waving he attempted...!
