I don't know about this one. The bottle I'm drinking tastes like a hybrid amber ale/IPA. Great lacing though. I bought a bottle of this as part of a mix-and-match six-pack I bought at the grocery store. Not a bad beer by any means, but to me it tastes more like an amber ale, a style of beer that I'm not the biggest fan of, with a slight bitter hop aftertaste. I don't think I'll have it again, even though everybody raves about it, unless I'm drinking an old bottle.
great review! like at least one other person said reviewing the beer in contrast with a food is a relatively unique feature of your reviews and i personally really like it. i have to ask though what is that cool bluesy song playing in the beginning of your video?
Good question. In my world, any beer that gets 4 mugs is a very good beer. What makes a 5 mug beer is a little subjective. I've scored four beers "5 mug" and what took them over the top for me was just their incredible balance along with great appearance. I think the Smuttynose was pretty close but fell short a tiny bit on drinkability and appearance. Part of it I'm sure is how I feel on the day I do the review.
Thanks for suggesting this beer, I really enjoyed it. I think it's right in line with Torpedo but a smidge below DFH 60 min and Lagunitas Hop Stoopid. Honestly, it's almost like splitting hairs sometimes. Any beer that gets 4 or 5 mugs in my system is definitely worth trying.
If I were Catholic I'd have to give it up for lent, I love that stuff... but I digress.
I agree with Mark 100% on Smuttynose IPA. It's good, it's solid, but it only deserves 4 mugs :-)
Great review as always bro, I love seeing your food pairings, it really adds a new dimension to the beer review. If only to give the viewers good ideas.
Sounds like I need to try the Porter! I'll look for it.
The Smuttynose IPA is a very good beer but not excellent. The line between a 4 and 5 mug is pretty thin sometimes and often comes down to some "unquantifiable" thing that just makes one beer a bit better than the others.
Glad you like the food pairings. I really enjoy drinking beer with food, especially off the BGE!
They do a few different porters so keep your eyes open, the regular smuttynose porter is great also, but Robust Porter is just a whole different world.

@BrokenGalaxy You might very well have an old bottle.

I reviewed this one last winter. Their Big A IPA is a bit better if you can get your hands on it.

Thanks! Beer and food are a great match. I enjoy cooking so pairing beer and food is a lot of fun. I'm glad you like the reviews.
The intro/outro is a from "Willingly" by Carl Weathersby, from the album "Hold On". He's a great performer. We saw him in Chicago a couple of times.

Just a question Mark,
What kept it from being a 5 mug rating? What is your
criteria for a 5 mug beer and what did the Smuttynose lack.

Yes it does.
To me there are so many great beers out there, it's
hard to tell what makes one better than another. I've found that by comparing two beers at the same time,
if one was inferior to the other it was pretty obvious. Thanks

Oh man, we had this on tap yesterday and it was awesome!

Yeah, I bet it was fantastic. It might have got a "5 mug" rating if I had it on tap.

I liked this one also.

Thanks for the shout out!
This is hands down one of the best IPA's around...I say 5 mugs, but 4 is still a fair grade...keep it up!

If you can get it. I love the Smuttynose Robust Porter, which should be out now.

Robust Porter is INCREDIBLE, isn't it!?!?
