  • funny!

  • che spettacolo!

  • One of the first RIO songs, in my opinion.

  • Is Phil Shulman in this footage?

  • @mestredigital2 no he had already left the band after the octopus album sometime around late 1972.I am pretty sure this is from 1973 or 74 in italy.

  • barocco'n roll... watch this:

    watch?v=_103zQiai4A

  • gentle giant is like yes combined with jethro tull and a barbershop quartet

  • Knots of confusion in the brain. Supposed to be maybe? Brain talk

  • Normal people can't do this. It takes actual talent!

  • I read the lyrics and my brain is subsequently full of fuck.

  • @SamuelLJacksonsFish sir i have not yet found the words to describe the pure genius of that comment

  • @SamuelLJacksonsFish

Try reading 'Knots' by R.D Laing - a book full of mental back and forth.

  • awesome hair

  • lo immaginavo che il bassista in realta' è un chitarrista..

  • genial

  • fantastic....

  • a typical progressive barbershop baroque'n'roll tune .... hahahaha

  • It's okay to hate it...just don't say it sucks because you would be wrong.

    Giant!

  • un dei più bei pezzi della storia del prog.

Il migliore gruppo del secolo scorso

  • Uno de los mejores grupos representativos del Rock-Progresivo...

  • great video and rare, work for more sequence,

  • Barbershop Baroque and Roll

  • Gotta love those dissonant contrapunctual vocalisations.

  • this music is so intense. when you listen to to much metal, take a break listening to classic prog....GG, Rush, and Camel all da way. fuck queensryche :D

  • God damn this is freaking amazing. Such bands can only be known by word of mouth. The only reason ppl nowadays can't listen to great stuff is because of the insane amount of ads they are subjected to....so they automatically block their ears. If you ask me who did this......the award goes to capitalist states of AMERICA! and i am not a communist or islamist or whatever......! frankly speaking they are worse.

  • absolulately exciting, electrifying, PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @TheKwatch

heyhey I just got twenty and I love this band more than any music in the world!

I cannot say how unbelievable deeply this music moves my emotions..free hand lyrics speak out of my soul :) so does the music. but however, I only got in touch with this music cause of my father :) he showed me free hand, and since then I Lost My Head :)) but yeah, forget about the youth today.. Just my closest friends understand why I love this band like if it was my brother.

  • Una miscela esplosiva. Mille influenze, eppure mostruosamente trascinanti...

  • good lord

  • Saw this lot in 72 supporting the Groundhogs and Stray. They came on first and played for ages - as if they were the main band! - when Stray came on they only had time for a 20 minute/4 song set so that the Groundhogs could do their whole set!

  • Nice Gentle Giant stuff!

    Great performance!

  • This is absolutely great, I agree!!!!!

I love the whole thing, and the ending guitar part is so perfect.

  • Absolutely great !!!

  • Good ole '70's live rap..!!

    LOL

    These guys are soooooooooo talented..!

    GG ROCKS..!

  • Any classical training here?

  • you bet, check out the italian stuff... I love it PFM, il baletto di bronzo I think they have more of the classical background

  • I think Kerry Minnear got a university degree in music composition.

  • Yeah and he is still capable of writing overwrought, tediously clever, technically proficient, archaically melodious and side splittingly camp nonsense like this. Degrees uh! what do they mean today? Got one but who can get a job?

  • My friends and I tried to do this. A freaking disaster! Ha haaaa!

  • The acoustics are great! And the performance is staggering!

  • how the fuck do they replicate those vocals live O_O

  • kak-attack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • theres chippy i found him hiding behind a gentle giant,

  • Even more spastic than on the album. Not for GG noobs at all XD

  • why did this band separated in 1980?, they were great!!!

  • Exquisite!

  • that's rock!!!!!!

  • May help if you open your mind some maybe huh??? FANTASTIC!!! THANKS FOR SHARING.

  • your comment, you mean.

  • @ennelacson show me a better band

  • Absolutely astonishing. I love Gentle Giant, but this particular song sounds much better live. It creates an aura of unreal and mysterious. Something from the medieval age. It's just amazing. I wish I had seen this italian program back at that time.

  • MOAR!

  • this is great :D

  • potrei avere più informazioni sulla trasmissione da cui è tratto questo clip? :) grazie per averlo caricato

  • BAROQUE N ROLL BABY

  • I always try to sing along with this song, but it's bloody impossible.

  • God I love the live version of this song . . . they speed it up and really ramp up the hard rocking feel.

  • black and white footage, haha cool!

  • I used to have every one of their albums on LP. Now I have them all on CD and I want to get them on LP again!

  • Three Friends are on tour! Dangerous K.M., Dangerous G.G., Dangerous M.M. and Mick (10CC) +2.. Be there...

  • One of my favorite albums of all times!

Still have the Jar shaped Record Cover and record in perfect condition in plastic in my collection. Great to see this amazing rare live stuff on Youtube... turn on a whole new generation to Gentle Giant...they are amazing!!!

    5 Stars!!

  • Wow - I didn't know they would do this song live! One of my absolute GG-favorites. Thank you so much for uploading!

  • alca

    esto es cultura musical

  • To everyone who asked me for the entire footage:

I've not been using my account for a long time, so I couldn't write before.

A friend of mine shared this part of the footage

with me, but I still don't have the rest.

It's from an old italian tv show and if I'll manage to get the entire video I'll share it on youtube.

  • hi.

sorry to disturb, but you whore able to get the entire footage already? :)

    absurd version.

    thx.

  • i,m 32 years old and think they are great band......along with Rush, Pink Floyd, Zepplin and Yes.....all great. Why are the english coming up with great stuff anymore....nothing experimental gets any media at all.

  • I am 51 too, ang GG are the only band that I like even more today than I did when I was 20

  • I first listened to this band when I was 15 and I'm now 51. I never get tired of them- Incredibly original,.and "In A Glass House" is one of the best ever on WWA records! Incredible pressing. I was able to see them live '74/'75/'77

  • translation for axzck "I started listening to this band when I was 15 and now I'm 21. It's still one of the best groups I know, but difficult to listen to purely for pleasure."

  • I dont know if I understood you correcty but music is always meant for pleasure, enjoyment. Enjoyment can however have different forms - on gutlevel and in the brain. This music is more complex and therefor you have to listen more attentively and/or more often, but once you 'understood' it (absorbed it), it is absolutely great to listen to and it gives me at least a great deal of pleasure.

  • Hi I was only translating the French guy's comments for axzck. They are not my opinions. axzck indicated that he didn't speak French so I thought I'd help..

  • thanks, thermosoverfil!

  • derek was a goofy frontman but they were a great band and he had a good if squeaky voice.

  • they were all goofy but that's what made them so much more enjoyable X-)

  • The lyrics of "Knots" can be found in the book of the same name by philosopher R. D. Laing. The book can be found in any public library or bookstore.

  • Where's the rest of it?????

it was simply amazing!! give us more! lol

  • Thanks for posting this. I once did an anthology on GG on my college radio station around 1976. By the way, the song "Knots" is inspired by the book "Knots" by Scottish psychiatrist R.D. Laing.

  • uhh, WTF, can someone explain this to me? I don't think I get it :-P

  • Its simply the greatest, most underrated, most talented band EVER.- BUT YOUR RIGHT- YOU'VE GOT TO "GET IT"

  • Grandi, eccezionali!!!

  • Excellent footage, I only wish that "Boys in the Band" guitar duet part was complete...

  • I really like GG but I really dont understand the lyrics of this song, if someone can help me....ps-I'm not english

  • oh my. this is genuis!!

  • Chissà se un giorno ritorneranno... sono grandi !!!

  • Terrific guitar duel. GG were really great, too big to be understood or appreciated by the majority, even in the seventies!! But they were incredible composers, musicians, and live performers. I can only think of one to be with them on stage, sharing such virtuosity, mood, and sense of humor, and he is Frank Zappa... If they´d only met to do "Pink Napkins", "Peaches in regalia", or the advent of Panurge"... wouldnt it be great?

  • Maravilhoso!!!!

  • Mivnava - words cannot thank you enough for sharing this.

    Sunchild333..........

Keep listening to music that doesn't have talent. I've never met you, but I'm guessing you're under 25 and not a musician. This clip came from an era where people actually had to play an instrument, not just sample it.

Try listening again with headphones on and no colourful pictures to distract you.

  • You really missed his point. And I very much doubt he searched for Gentle Giant without appreciating them.

  • Don't think of it as criticizing the band. I wasn't doing that. I was saying that making a band like GG today, wouldn't make sense. There aren't many people like you and me out there to appreciate talent. I am 17 and play Gentle Giant on my guitar. In the future I will play progessive rock, but none of you will ever hear about me. That's my point.

Peace and love to all Gentle Giant fans!

  • I understand your point SC - it was well made. There are some complete recordings of Knots posted elsewhere on ths site if anyone wants to hear the rest of the acoustic solo!

  • I am under 25 and love Gentle Giant :P

  • I am under 16 and I love Gentle Giant.

  • Yes as for me -axzck- . J'ai commencé à écouter ce groupe lorsque j'avais 15 ans, et maintenant à 21, c'est encore un des meilleurs groupes que je connais, mais c'est très dur d'écoute pour plusieurs.

  • sorry, i don't understand french, Fan1prog. Could you speak in english, please?

  • Can you actually see a group today performing such complex harmonies with such precise inflection and intonation? Add to that, genuine, top drawer instrumental virtuosity. That is one well-rehearsed and talented group!

  • You're right about that. But although there still are some musicians who are extremely talented but not many of them can write good music. And writing something in the style of Gentle Giant and expecting that anyone will listen to you, would be like trying to breathe in space. You could be talented...but talent is something that doesn't cut it in the 21st century. Maybe that's why GG will never be reunited.

  • Where was this filmed??? and by whom?

and DAMN!!!! where is the rest of it???

  • This is Italy 1972. You can tell by the clothes. =)

  • actually,this is from their 1973 tour,but i'm not really sure it's italy.

  • Sunchild333, it was obviously filmed in the early 70's but where was it filmed? Any Idea? The film is also missing some of the best guitar duo's I can think of. It would be great to contact all the members of the band to see if they have any personal footage of their music making and if they did, have them put up on you tube. Wouldn't that be a treat!

    Later,

    Toad

  • Please!

Where is the rest of this footage!

Thanks so much for this; it was magnificent.

  • indeed. great early footage.

  • Now... this is rare!
