this music is so intense. when you listen to to much metal, take a break listening to classic prog....GG, Rush, and Camel all da way. fuck queensryche :D
God damn this is freaking amazing. Such bands can only be known by word of mouth. The only reason ppl nowadays can't listen to great stuff is because of the insane amount of ads they are subjected to....so they automatically block their ears. If you ask me who did this......the award goes to capitalist states of AMERICA! and i am not a communist or islamist or whatever......! frankly speaking they are worse.
heyhey I just got twenty and I love this band more than any music in the world!
I cannot say how unbelievable deeply this music moves my emotions..free hand lyrics speak out of my soul :) so does the music. but however, I only got in touch with this music cause of my father :) he showed me free hand, and since then I Lost My Head :)) but yeah, forget about the youth today.. Just my closest friends understand why I love this band like if it was my brother.
Saw this lot in 72 supporting the Groundhogs and Stray. They came on first and played for ages - as if they were the main band! - when Stray came on they only had time for a 20 minute/4 song set so that the Groundhogs could do their whole set!
Yeah and he is still capable of writing overwrought, tediously clever, technically proficient, archaically melodious and side splittingly camp nonsense like this. Degrees uh! what do they mean today? Got one but who can get a job?
Absolutely astonishing. I love Gentle Giant, but this particular song sounds much better live. It creates an aura of unreal and mysterious. Something from the medieval age. It's just amazing. I wish I had seen this italian program back at that time.
Still have the Jar shaped Record Cover and record in perfect condition in plastic in my collection. Great to see this amazing rare live stuff on Youtube... turn on a whole new generation to Gentle Giant...they are amazing!!!
i,m 32 years old and think they are great band......along with Rush, Pink Floyd, Zepplin and Yes.....all great. Why are the english coming up with great stuff anymore....nothing experimental gets any media at all.
I first listened to this band when I was 15 and I'm now 51. I never get tired of them- Incredibly original,.and "In A Glass House" is one of the best ever on WWA records! Incredible pressing. I was able to see them live '74/'75/'77
translation for axzck "I started listening to this band when I was 15 and now I'm 21. It's still one of the best groups I know, but difficult to listen to purely for pleasure."
I dont know if I understood you correcty but music is always meant for pleasure, enjoyment. Enjoyment can however have different forms - on gutlevel and in the brain. This music is more complex and therefor you have to listen more attentively and/or more often, but once you 'understood' it (absorbed it), it is absolutely great to listen to and it gives me at least a great deal of pleasure.
Hi I was only translating the French guy's comments for axzck. They are not my opinions. axzck indicated that he didn't speak French so I thought I'd help..
Thanks for posting this. I once did an anthology on GG on my college radio station around 1976. By the way, the song "Knots" is inspired by the book "Knots" by Scottish psychiatrist R.D. Laing.
Terrific guitar duel. GG were really great, too big to be understood or appreciated by the majority, even in the seventies!! But they were incredible composers, musicians, and live performers. I can only think of one to be with them on stage, sharing such virtuosity, mood, and sense of humor, and he is Frank Zappa... If they´d only met to do "Pink Napkins", "Peaches in regalia", or the advent of Panurge"... wouldnt it be great?
Mivnava - words cannot thank you enough for sharing this.
Sunchild333..........
Keep listening to music that doesn't have talent. I've never met you, but I'm guessing you're under 25 and not a musician. This clip came from an era where people actually had to play an instrument, not just sample it.
Try listening again with headphones on and no colourful pictures to distract you.
Don't think of it as criticizing the band. I wasn't doing that. I was saying that making a band like GG today, wouldn't make sense. There aren't many people like you and me out there to appreciate talent. I am 17 and play Gentle Giant on my guitar. In the future I will play progessive rock, but none of you will ever hear about me. That's my point.
I understand your point SC - it was well made. There are some complete recordings of Knots posted elsewhere on ths site if anyone wants to hear the rest of the acoustic solo!
Yes as for me -axzck- . J'ai commencé à écouter ce groupe lorsque j'avais 15 ans, et maintenant à 21, c'est encore un des meilleurs groupes que je connais, mais c'est très dur d'écoute pour plusieurs.
Can you actually see a group today performing such complex harmonies with such precise inflection and intonation? Add to that, genuine, top drawer instrumental virtuosity. That is one well-rehearsed and talented group!
You're right about that. But although there still are some musicians who are extremely talented but not many of them can write good music. And writing something in the style of Gentle Giant and expecting that anyone will listen to you, would be like trying to breathe in space. You could be talented...but talent is something that doesn't cut it in the 21st century. Maybe that's why GG will never be reunited.
Sunchild333, it was obviously filmed in the early 70's but where was it filmed? Any Idea? The film is also missing some of the best guitar duo's I can think of. It would be great to contact all the members of the band to see if they have any personal footage of their music making and if they did, have them put up on you tube. Wouldn't that be a treat!
