  • why were ITV advertising, channel 4 programmes?

  • If I remember correctly, the situation at that time was that Channel 4 was funded by ITV and it was obliged to trail Channel 4 programmes. The regional ITV companies also sold the advertising for Channel 4 in their areas.

It really was a different broadcasting world in those days.

The decline in Channel 4 really began when it was made responsible for selling its own ads and so raising its own income.

  • Out of a fear that C4 might not attract mainstream audiences/revenue, ITV sold the ad slots and it was therefore completely in its own interests to promote C4 programmes as alternatives to its own, so viewers would watch one of the two. I guess you're right, that things changed when C4 was responsible for raising its income, as economics must have affected scheduling and editorial policies. But the very reason it was given that right was because it had proven so popular as it was already.

  • From seeing this and other clips, Jane seemed to be fond of saying ''Next though...'' a lot!
