Hello, does running a windows program using vmware.com on a mac operating system like apple cause any proplems like virus's, spyware, malware ect. ect. on a mac operating system?? I want to make sure because mac operating systems like apple basically cannot get any type of virus's of any type so I dont want to harm my computer. Please message me back.
I cant play games on my VMware Fusion it says your graphics card or video card has properly stopped working even though on my mac it works properly please help!
@bradskate14 Your Win7 download may have come as a disk image... like an ISO file. You can "mount" the ISO file as a drive with VMWare. Then, when you start your virtual machine, it will detect it and boot from it. Then, it should proceed as a standard install. If your Win7 download didn't come as an ISO, you'll need to convert it to an ISO file. There are lots of tools available that will help you with that.
for all you ppl who dont know a thing, this is a full windows os, that can play everything that windows would normally play, so yes, it can play all your puny games and stuff. PERIOD. also ur pc wont be slowed down. so yes, parallels is the best option.
@BananagunStudios Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Yes... you can run your virtual machine full screen and on a second monitor. It's a great option that I use frequently.
To show off the dominance of mac, if anything. Both OS's have their strengths and weaknesses, so being able to run both on one machine is extremely convenient.
Not me. I have to test software on both platforms and some administrative functions where i work are in PC-only web apps. If I didn't have to do those things, I'd never use Windows at all.
Where is XP Pro on the website for the VMWare applications.... at the moment i have Centos 5.2 and i cant seem to run .exe files on it... I have a mac book and all i really want is to download .exe files
in my opinion boot camp is alot better to use than these virtual machines. boot camp runs windows at full speed and it seems that these virtual machines lag quite a bit. and the only reason i want a windows partition on my imac is to play games.
Very well done video. Thank you. I've just switched from Parallels to VMWare Fusion on my Intel Maccook nad am much much happier with VMWare. It runs much smoother and faster and printing on my USB HP Photosmart is a breeze from Windows-unlike Parallels.
Your video is great, but i have a question. I have xp pro and vmware fusion on my mac. I have an external hard drive that my husband was using on his pc that i would like to backup my mac to. when i go to do so it says that i need to reformat it. If I do this will i loe all of the info on it and if so, can I backup my mac through the windows side? Again, if so.. how do I do that?
Thnx.! I did the reformat and all that and started to do the backup. I left and came back and it said there was an error or something and stopped. Now it's not even coming up as an option to backup to. if the S.M.A.R.T says "not supported" does that mean I can't use the hard drive or is something wrong? Boo, I'm so lost.
So you just need to install this Fusion in and your good to go ? Or do you still need to install the Xp operation just like Bootcamp ? And can this Fusion thing run Autocad ?
You need to install XP as well. Fusion give you a "blank" virtual PC with no operating system. After Fusion is installed, you can install any x86 operating system you want.
As for running Autocad, I'm not really sure. I would think it would be okay since VMWare claims they support high-end gaming and such. I have no experience with it thought.
Mark I love this video and great explanation on USB connected devices. I do a LOT of tech support for BlackBerry and as you know BBDM is only for Windows. When I get the MacBook will VMWare/Parallels running XP will recognize my BB via USB in virtualization so that I can SYNC & Charge it. I figure that Outlook on a LAN & connected via MAPI service to Exchange server will work correctly so this will be a hurdle I'm going to face.
I'm not sure of the hardware requirements necessary for Fusion. I can tell you that the RAM on your system is shared with the Fusion machine. You could set it up so that your virtual machine has 512Mg of ram with the rest left of OSX. The hard drive space isn't all that important but the RAM and clockspeed is.
Also, Fusion might require an Intel processor in which case your system won't do it. You'll have to check the Fusion site for details.
That's what VMWare Fusion is for... You only need the Mac Hardware. I am using an iMac. Fusion is a program that runs on the Mac to emulate a computer. You can install any "Intel" operating system on the emulated computer. In my demo, I show Windows. I know other people that run Ubuntu as well.
Im surprised you didn't show everybody that files can be dragged and dropped from Mac to Windows and vice versa. Much easier and quicker than dealing with the shared folders.
They claim that you can run games for Windows in Fusion but I haven't tried it. When I want to play games, I just use my XBox.
As for viruses, yes... your Virtual Windows system is still vulnerable to viruses, spyware, etc... It's pretty unlikely that anything you picked up in Windows would cross over into your Mac though.
Yes, I run COD 4 and COD 2 and Vice City AND Sims 2 with no problem in VMware Fusion. Just renember to turn on 3D Acceleration before you do it though!
u just insets the cd when configuring, and vmware makes things easier for you, it installs the Mac drivers auto, and i like it, do you know how expensive it is?? thanks!
On the Virtual Windows Desktop, there was a folder called Shared folders or something like that. Opening that folder gave access to the Mac filesystem. You can also just drag a file from the Windows desktop to the Mac desktop and back.
it shouldn't be more then 3-4 years before memory becomes so large and cheep that these programs run so fast and efficient windows machines will be a thing of the past.
You can drag and drop files but not programs. For example if you created a Word Document in Office 07 on XP, you could drag and drop the file from the virtual PC to the Mac. You can NOT drag and drop Word, Excel or Powerpoint though... just the files.
I'm not sure what you mean by FULL version of Windows, but yes, you do have to have a Windows install disc. As long as the disc you have will install on a standard x86 Intel machine, it should install just fine with Fusion. Just getting fusion does not automatically give you Windows. It just gives you a virtual machine that you can install any x86 OS on. You could install Linux or Windows or OS/2 or DOS or whatever. But you have to have the install source for the OS you want to install.
PART1: would that be able to happen with programs that are installed using XP on VM, and i would be able to use them by just running mac?
eg. you moved the document you created in Windows, would it work if i install a WINXP program onto Winxp using VMWARE Fusion, would i then b able to Run it in MAC without having WINXP openeg. View > Unity, meaning if i copy the program folder using the unity onto MAC would it be able to be run it without having to open WINXP in a seprate window after that?
No... you'd still have to start up the Virtual Windows machine. After the virtual machine is up and running, then you can fire up the programs in the Unity View. But without the virtual machine running, there is no Unity view. I think it might be time for another video!
In addition to the Unity view, there's also a Full Screen view. When running in full screen view it looks like you're just running a PC with Windows. The only difference is that when you hover your mouse up at the top, you get the Mac Menu bar.
so what your saying is that Windows would run seperatley in another window on your screen, and not add window program capabilities to your MAC, i thought fusion would let MAC run windows Programs without having to have a small box in the middle?
Your assesment is right. You have to be "running Windows" in order to run windows programs. There is a mode you can use called "Unity" which allows you to move the windows programs out into the OS X environment, but you still have to have that virtual Windows box running.
It would be amazing if Fusion would allow you to run Windows programs without having to fire up the Virtual Windows box in the middle, but alas... that's not the case.
I'm not much of a Mac Fan but recently heard of VMWare. To my understanding there are quite a few virtual machines out there(this is probably incorrect but not the point) and I have a couple of questions about this software.
Wouldn't there be some lag if you do start using this quite often on your Mac System?
How would some features work out such as right-clicks?
Would much room would it take up on your PC? I know that Windows XP has couple of gb worth of space.
In general, the computers have more than enough power for whatever you're running (unless it's gaming or video encoding, etc...).
The mac can handle right clicks in a few ways. You can either Ctrl+click or you can set OSX to pick up right clicks. The Apple Mighty Mouse can detect if you right click vs. left click.
You can set your virtual machine to have a dynamically sized hard drive. I have mine set to 20Gb to account for the OS and applications. It's ample.
I'm not really much of a gamer. When I do play games it's usually on my XBox360. My understanding is that you can play games in your virtual machine. I guess it works well but I can't really vouch for it.
Before I bought VMWare I downloaded and tried the 30 day demo of Parallels. I had lots of problems with it in Windows. The Windows install would blue screen and crash a lot. When I switched over to VMWare things were okay. I must have done something wrong in Parallels, but one way or the other, I'm running Fusion.
One thing I noticed about Fusion is that you can set your virtual machine to use two CPUs. Under Parallels, you can't do that. Or at least you couldn't when I tried it.
thats really nice vid of showing how fusion works. now im gonna get a mac real soon and i heard you can run windows on it. so now when i do want to install windows, do i have to use bootcamp? and do i have to use bootcamp to use fusion? thanks!
Running Bootcamp is a "free" way to run windows on your mac (provided that you already have a windows install disc). However when you do that, you boot right into windows. Running VMWare allows you to do what I show in the video. You have to buy VMWare but then you can switch back and forth like I show. Bootcamp and VMWare are mutually exclusive... you run one or the other. It is just a question of do you want to have to reboot to fire up Windows?
VMWare gives you the virtual hardware. For the operating system, you need to have the install CDs. I have an MSDN subscription that gives me the install CDs but you could also buy a copy from Best Buy, Circuit City or Amazon.
hey mark maybe you could help me. i set the partion in Fusion for 10 gb. could i make that bigger without having to reinstall windows and such inside of it?
I didn't notice a way to increase the size of the partition, however you can add another virtual hard drive. If you go to the settings for the VM, you can click the little [+] sign and add a new hard drive.
thanks alot, i will give that a try. also. I run a program called SOULSEEK. and two issues with it. The program will not stay minimized in the dock, even if i lock it in the dock. it will stay there then. but it wont open normally. i wonder why.
Its getting very little search results where as my PC DESKTOP of the same program gets loads. I can assume it has to do with the UPNP or the router of sorts. Do you know how i can fix this issue?
Each instance of the virtual machine gets it's own "hard drive" so you can have three virtual machines, each with it's own hard drive. You can install XP, Vista, Linux, or any X86 operating system on the virtual hard drive. The size of the virtual hard drives are in your control and exists as a file. The bigger the virtual hard drive, the bigger the file. If you create a 20Gb virtual hard drive, the file will be around 20Gb.
i rather run boot camp. i know being able to run both at the same time would be cool. oh i forgot to tell you mark, i finally got my imac. i got the 24" 2.4 ghz. i'm working on getting the macbook air next.
When running VMWare Fusion (or Parallels for that matter), you can install anything you want. It's literally running Windows so you can do anything you could do on a normal Windows system.
The networking works just fine. What happens is that the virtual machine shares your Mac's network. It gets it's own IP and such. The virtual Windows can access all of the Windows machines and printers on your network.
how do you install vmware tools?

"To show off the dominance of mac"
The convenience of running XP on most hardware and as a VM is the dominance of XP.
The INABILITY of OSX to to this is Apple's weakness and INABILITY!
Why Apple tards think otherwise .. well... their stupidity is just amazing.

are there any downsides compared to bootcamp besides being a little slower?
lbkiml 2 years ago
Nice but your better off getting all the features on a cheaper, better hardware PC... and run OSX as a VM session on it instead.
Windows can run things in SLI or CS4 in 64 bit mode, OSX cannot. (yes goobers go look up autodesk and see that it cant! - only on Vista 64)
jabberwolf 2 years ago
Bootcamp...
blaste 2 years ago 2
again why?
When most used programs are on XP anyway?
You are better off using a PC, used saved money getting a new OCZ solid disk drive, and running OSX in a VM on XP.
Doing it the other way around on a mac is more expensive ans slower.
jabberwolf 2 years ago
I wasn't aware you could run OSX in a VM on XP; not without hacking it anyhow.
markdotnet 2 years ago
And why should it be slower?
ninjakind 2 years ago
Because at the same price point that you bought a mac...
With a PC and a SSD hard drive
its quicker - MUCH!
And you can always run a hacked VM version of OSX on your PC - ( and again at same price point faster).

I am fairly certain you'll have to reformat the drive as the computer says. When you reformat the drive, all data on it will be gone.
I don't believe you'll be able to back up your Mac via Windows/VMWare. You might be better off picking up another external drive for backup.
You might be able to back up just your documents via Windows/VMWare, but not a full system backup.

You can set your virtual machine to have a dynamically sized hard drive. I have mine set to 20Gb to account for the OS and applications. It's ample.
Good luck!

Can you play PC games on your mac using this software?
LiveColorado 3 years ago
I'm not really much of a gamer. When I do play games it's usually on my XBox360. My understanding is that you can play games in your virtual machine. I guess it works well but I can't really vouch for it.

Cool vid. Thanks. Been wondering what it would be like. Now windows users can't use that excuse "it won't run on a mac"

have you used parallels? if so whats the different between that and VMWare Fusion? like give me the Pros and Cons of both. and which is better?
johnnyblaze104 3 years ago
Before I bought VMWare I downloaded and tried the 30 day demo of Parallels. I had lots of problems with it in Windows. The Windows install would blue screen and crash a lot. When I switched over to VMWare things were okay. I must have done something wrong in Parallels, but one way or the other, I'm running Fusion.
One thing I noticed about Fusion is that you can set your virtual machine to use two CPUs. Under Parallels, you can't do that. Or at least you couldn't when I tried it.

thats really nice vid of showing how fusion works. now im gonna get a mac real soon and i heard you can run windows on it. so now when i do want to install windows, do i have to use bootcamp? and do i have to use bootcamp to use fusion? thanks!
johnnyblaze104 3 years ago
Running Bootcamp is a "free" way to run windows on your mac (provided that you already have a windows install disc). However when you do that, you boot right into windows. Running VMWare allows you to do what I show in the video. You have to buy VMWare but then you can switch back and forth like I show. Bootcamp and VMWare are mutually exclusive... you run one or the other. It is just a question of do you want to have to reboot to fire up Windows?
Good luck.

hey i have vmware fusion but where do i get Windows XP for it?
Dominic705 3 years ago
VMWare gives you the virtual hardware. For the operating system, you need to have the install CDs. I have an MSDN subscription that gives me the install CDs but you could also buy a copy from Best Buy, Circuit City or Amazon.

hey mark maybe you could help me. i set the partion in Fusion for 10 gb. could i make that bigger without having to reinstall windows and such inside of it?
okrelayer 3 years ago
I didn't notice a way to increase the size of the partition, however you can add another virtual hard drive. If you go to the settings for the VM, you can click the little [+] sign and add a new hard drive.
Hope this helps.

thanks alot, i will give that a try.
Do you know how i can fix this issue?
thanks alot for helping

I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with that application.

Dear Mark, I have a very silly question. Should I install windows OS first before intalling VMware Fusion, or the other way round? Thank you.
archbrain82 4 years ago
No worries about being 'silly'.
The way it works is this:
* You install VMWare Fusion. That allows you to start up a virtual computer with no operating system.
* You "connect" the CD drive of the virtual computer to your physical CD drive. Then the virtual computer can read from the CD
* You insert the Windows install CD/DVD and then start your virtual machine. It takes off and installs Windows.
Voila! Done and done.

hey Mark, can you install 3rd party pc applications when you have vmware (XP) running?
How the networking when Win XP is running through VMWARE? Can you access other shared PC?
Thanks,
j2tran77 4 years ago
When running VMWare Fusion (or Parallels for that matter), you can install anything you want. It's literally running Windows so you can do anything you could do on a normal Windows system.
The networking works just fine. What happens is that the virtual machine shares your Mac's network. It gets it's own IP and such. The virtual Windows can access all of the Windows machines and printers on your network.
