@pyrocracker1: Sorry, I don't drive this vehicle anymore so I couldn't tell you what color the wires are. I'm sure you have but I would check along the frame on the passenger side right up to the back of the fusebox. Other than that, I dunno. Good Luck
nicely done man mines is a 97 SOHC 4.0 just got 40 series (no res...) but mines is dual in dual out oh and too all you potential exhaust owners... explorers unlike other SUVs and trucks come unconventionally dual in single out... BTW did you keep yours dual in single out? cause i got mines dual in and dual out.... just welded her where my spare would be... and had them come out straight not the side like yours i will try to post a new vid of mines just as soon as i get some time
yeah well new it'll run you $3-5 for the set up i got only because i got one dual in dual out muffler(both go in to one chamber and both come out seperately) not sure if that helps you but we need more explorers out there to sound out some ford muscle lol... any one got a good idea on how to install a cold air intake...and how much it'll cost me?
i have the exact same year except mine is an XLT. i still dont know if i want to put an exhaust system on mine. yours sounds good, i dont want to go all retarded redneck and put the loudest piece of crap on there. but then again i dont want it to sound like a 454 running straight headers at a stoplight
Got the muffler off of the flowmaster site, and the tailpipe I just looked for the lowest price online. Looking back, I should have just bought an angle piece and made a cutout right in front of the right rear wheel
That explorer sounds good, there are a bunch of ford rangers around where I live that put them on too with the 4.0 they sound just like yours. I have a old f-150 with the 4.9 inline 6. thew on a high flow cat, and put on a single in dual out flowmaster 40 and that thing is loud and deep. Nice explorer
And I see you're really styling in your bar of soap explorer that can't fit mud tires under it. I drive a chevy pickup right now with a cam, roller rockers, hooker headers, and a dam site more power than your explorer. Oh...and don't leave so much information lying around online...you wouldn't want somebody to find out where you park that explorer.
ohhh look at that lawn mower gooo. lookin really stylin with your flomaster exhaust sticker on the bumper. look at my vid. ive got a V8!!!! its worthy f a new exhaust. that just sounds terrible. dont put exhaust on a v6 explorer unless your a tool
not too much, I was just looking to increase throttle response..so I got accel wires and bosch platinum 4 spark plugs. Pretty sure it was under $30... the only problem is that you have to either jack the car up in the front or pull off a tire and reach through the wheel well to get to the back plugs
The Ford 4.0L/244 cid is the big brother in a family of Ford V6 engines that were built in Cologne, Germany, and have been used in domestic Fords since the early 70s. The original 2.6L engine was replaced by the 2.8L, which was upgraded to the 2.9L and then finally bored and stroked to make it into the 4.0L that was used in the Rangers, Aerostars and Explorers starting in 1990. It was replaced by a SOHC engine from this same family at the end of model year 2000.
the 2.9 was finally bored to the 3.0L in 1990. and the 4.0 was avabile in the 4x4 ranger, explorer lineup. but i have seen 4.0 rangers that were 2 wheel drive.
sounds good, thanks to this video i just bought one for my explorer. it would sound better when i put on the tailpipe, but i have to get a reducer for it. ill have a video of it soon
Well, I left the cat and replaced everything from there back because there was only about a 2ft piece of rusted pipe between the cat and the muffler. So I bought a piece of straight pipe for that piece at a shop for like a buck or two, the muffler from flowmaster online, and just a stock replacement tailpipe which goes from the muffler back. Didn't feel like spending more for a complete kit so I sorta just threw this together .
Lack of funds would be the main reason right now. Just put new tires, rotors, calipers, control arm bushings, and bearings in so I'm going to leave it be for the time being. Eventually I will swap the motor completely and with gas the way it is, maybe put in a diesel, or just a small light v8.
yeah. most people who have the explorer have it because of lack of funds, if not they would have the expedition. i have a 95 sport 2Dr. 5 speed manual 4.0L and i want to make a Saleen XP6 clone out of it :P
umm.... dude.. the 4.0L OHV was introduced in 91 and ran to 1998. in 1999 the 4.0L SOHC took over and is currently in production even today. the explorer has NEVER had a 3.8L in it.
well unless you really love the sound, take the flowmasters off, because they really flow less than stock. use a good magnaflow, or gibson exhaust system. a BBK throttle body, K&N full intake, Hooker Headers, high flow cats. or just swap in a 4.0L SOHC and you will have 210 to begin with.
You know I have been looking for computer chips for mine too... I havent bought one yet because im afraid something happeneds to my car. The hypertec one looks pretty sweet (it says it can give you 300hp on stage 1) but I dont think that comes for free... Im worried it cuts the life out of the engine, or eats up my MPG. My explorer only has 82k and the engine only has 30k on it so im nervous about it... Keep me updated though on your research!
sounds wicked! I have a '94 eddie bauer with the 4.0 v6 too! Mine has a Jardine cat back exhaust and a K&N Fabricated intake system. All you need is an intake so you can get more of that "popping" when the tach drops.. Mine has so much that ppl think its a v8! :)
Thanks, I plan to install a Kurts Kustom Motorsports intake this month. What do you think about the power programers. I have heard good and bad things; from sharp throttle response to chronic overheating

I managed to get the passenger side back one by turning the wheels hard left....

what size is the piping? catback? muffler back?
blackdragon2875 3 years ago
Just 2.5''
Didn't want to lose back pressure
subfourthirtymiler 3 years ago
understandable. from how far back? did you start it at the cats? or just replace the muffler back?
