But the mirror COULD have been placed to the right or the left and still showed hand motions, yet he decided to put it directly in front of the place that indicates what speed the game is being played on.

Also if you listen, you can hear the sound of the keys are too high-pitched for actual key presses, indicating that the video is sped up.

The black rectangle is a side effect of a camcorder and a screen refreshing at different rates. It wasn't actually there when he played it. Only good video recorders take care of this.
