Wow, DEVO actually made a music video that had the two things that scare me most: Mannequins and monkeys...... *shudders* If they had included roaches I might have never been the same. DEVO is my favorite band but my GOD.....
I saw this music video from the MOMA & my reaction is like....Who the hell are these band, but they brought an artstic delivery for this strange fucking song lol :)
the new blu-ray of island of lost souls has a featurette with Devo talking about how much the film influenced their music AND it has the entire "de-evolution of man" film presented as an extra--which this video came from.
This never gets old. It's still as exciting and good as the first time I heard it, years ago. I wish DEVO was still like this!!!! I guess it's up to me to make my own band!! because there really are no new bands like this.
Secret Agent Man is such a great song, but is anyone else excited to see Mark Mothersbaugh in the documentary “Programming the Nation.” He’s so insightful. I just love how this guy seems to be active in society rather than sitting on his money. bit. ly/qUuUCp
I think this is one of the first examples of new wave. The original song was by Johnny Rivers "Secreat Agent Man"... from 1966. Great song. I always got the feeling that it was a signum for a tv series or a toy... Does someone here has more info? Thanks for posting.... g
@SergioFloresa If you have already received a reply to your question I apologise in advance. 'Secret Agent Man' was the theme tune to the British television series Dangerman (Secret Agent in the U.S.), starring Patrick McGoohan (The Prisoner).
I think the first series (season) did not do well in the U.S. so they vamped it up and changed it from a half hour show to an hour from the second season onwards and replaced the original catchy theme tune with Johnny Rivers'.
@ManFromMelbourne I've got this video on a dvd called "The Complete Truth About Devolution". It's the only place I've seen/heard it. It's definitely worth getting. It's a great dvd all around. You're totally right. This version is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than the Duty Now version.
Okay, so I know that a couple of decades have gone by since this was made. And I was a huge Devo fan and knew they were a bit odd. Nonetheless, when I finally got around to seeing this video I couldn't help but sit there with my mouth open and my brain going, "What ... the ... hell ... is ... this!?"
I saw them for the first time on SNL in 1978 and will never forget it. Had never seen or heard anything like it before. Amazing band. I was hooked right there and then. Around the same time our local cable channel here in Halifax,Nova Scotia,Canada would play the only videos they had, this one,''Hong Kong Garden'' by Siousxie and The Banshees and three linked videos by Dire Straits, songs from Making Movies lp(I guess this was actually 1980). Devo stuck out more than the other videos. Underrated.
I remember watching Devo on an English music programme So It Goes in 1978 being asked about their synthesizers & stating "we don't use synthesizers, we abuse them..."
@EyeoftheU OK I got it now. This is the quartet line up with Jim Mothersbaugh and his homemade electronic drum set. I'm guessing that's also him in the "Jocko Homo" clip. With nylons.
Note how they completely switch the tense of the original, from third to first-person. "They've given ME a number, and they've taken away MY name."
This semi-cover reveals the reality of the secret agent man, as opposed to the romanticized view of the original. Bob 1 acts as the simple everyman who just has a job to do, and is resigned to a life of "safeguarding America's health," saluting the flag, and making prayers of gratitude (as opposed to prayers for his safety, oddly enough).
that dool dude is way to scary and...........it looks like the joker u know like the thing thats so scary you cant stop watching yeah its that scary.(the doll)
The music is so bent wicked, and the vid is crooked awesome. I thought the spuds did cover of their cover of Johhny Rivers, you know "double cover" just like a secret agent would do. Then I read this was made prior to their album version and I feel just like one of those Beatles junkies when they score on some previously unreleased crap from lennon. Chimps with paddles - did these guys get all their props from ax-man surplus?!
Oh God, I love how the opening segment is not only pitch-bent, but also, the oldness of the tape warps the sound, creating an OMFG WHAT IS THIS noise. :D
Best - i agree with all comments that show this too be a much richer, stinkier, sicker version than on 'Duty Now' . The intestinal troubles Booji boy is having whilst getting out the car (listen) are just part of the rot that starts it so well and only gets worse. Excellent!
@LonelyAtTheTop79 hahaha, thanx. I always wondered WHO was stroking that doll hanger. Jerry. Stroking the doll hanger would be something Rod Rooter would do, but obviously that guy did not look like Rod
