@boorens18 dallas greens guitar doesnt sound like this , dont know what strings this guys got on, but i have the 000 15 and it sounds alot warmer like dallas greens guitar.
thanks for getting the sound and video more in sync. i will try to play it on my 00-17. mine is beat to shit, patched body, needs fret work,..... still sounds rich and fine . nice guitar.
nice sound. I bought d'addario 0.13-0.56/ it sounds nice in dropped C or 1 tune down. today I decide try double dropped C. it was interesting, sounded nice.
Your playing style is almost exactly mine. I only play hardly and more feelings there.
I have a '42 O-18 and I think it sounds best tuned this way:
Eb, G#, C#, F#, Bb, Eb
Then put the capo on fret one and you have standard tuning, still lots of resonance, slightly lower action.
For some reason, yes, it is not only the mahogany 0 bodies but also spruce top ones as well. They are deeper than 00 in body depth and they for some reason just sound better de-tuned.
Just a random question, do you find that these Mahogany topped martins sound best with lower tuning? My 34 017 was in need of a neck reset so I kept it in open D or open C for slide, and I kindof get the feeling that these guitars excel in the lowered tunings. Just wondering if that is what you prefer as well.
Should be getting my 017 back from the shop so I'll be posting a vid soon. Thanks.
Great guiar! The model 17s were what the US Army bought up and sent to military bases in the 1940s which explains why there are so many of them around, relatively speaking.
I have a 1944 00-17, it has an ebony truss rod, and it's the lightest guitar I've ever felt. Does yours have a metal truss rod? I was told the reason for ebony is because of the wartime metal shortage.
I also have a 1944 0-17, I had the neck reset on it recently and my luthier told me it had an ebony truss rod. I don't know if this 1940 00-17 has metal or ebony - I will have to check sometime using a large magnet. In the 20s Martin used ebony but during the 30's they switched to metal rod. Then in the war years they were forced to go back to ebony rod due to steel shortages.
Cool. That's probably why the guitar is so light. I was going to have mine X-rayed but it wasn't worth the bother. I belive it's ebony if anything. Mine also has an ebony nut, which is interesting. Makes sense, actually and I don't know why you don't see more of that. My pegs are white with a small black dot in the center, they look plastic. Mike
Your 1940 should definitely have a metal T-bar trussrod. Martin switched to ebony in late 1941 or early 1942, and kept using the ebony truss rod until 1945 I believe. That guitar sounds absolutely great by the way. I have a 1934 0-17 that is amazing as well.
It is an actual 1940 Martin 00-17 that I was lucky enough to purchase a few years ago. It is in excellent condition with original finish, almost no pick or fret wear, and is all original except for the bridge pins.
Sweet man! Are you in an open tuning or just a dropped D. I would love for you to post a video tutorial. Your playing in a style I want to learn. thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the kind words. Tuning is double dropped D -
tuning the 1st and 6th strings so that you are at D-A-D-G-B-D. In the upload, the audio seems to have lost perfect sync with picture so it is a challenge to learn from watching. If I tab this out I can send it.

Both 17s sound good in standard tuning but I like drone effect of dropped D and DADGAD on the 00-17 best.
