This was pretty comic in all it's sadness. I'd say different discipline methods for different kids, people try so depserately generilize what works or does not work when it's not that simple and common as are not children. Some straighten up with time-outs, some only if spanked, some by other methods. A parent just needs to find the one for their kid seeing to the situation in q. Those nannies are lifesavers. But in those cases it's always the parents that are the problem. Not really the kids.

First of all, unless you knew these families personally, how do you know they never spanked their kids before the nannies came? Spanking isn't some miracle cure that will always work for every kid. They very well could have hit their kids but it wasn't working!

Not one of them ever had a tantrum. the 21 y-o used to tell me and his dad we were "FIRED" if he could not get his way, but no screaming, slapping, cursing etc. I didn't have time for time outs. If I said jump, they'd ask when they could come down! I don't play that ish! Call CPS, but pack your bags & stay with them! My kids never even had a detention

You never said that in your original comment- I apologise for the confusion. However, I have a suggestion- Most children are very posession oriented- overly concerned about their "stuff". Maybe each time they do something deemed "inappropriate", posessions may be taken away. The child would then have to perform a task to regain it. Both methods may work because they have the same goal- to teach your child that actions have consequences. That is what we, as parents, need to teach them.

If a parent hits their child, it may stop the problem for a time- maybe for a day or two, but sooner or later the kid is going to figure "hell, my dad hits me, so why don't I go hit my friends, or maybe my sister?" Hitting a child only really teaches them two things- it is okay to hit, and be afraid of your parents. Is that what you, as a parent, want to teach your kids? And what happens when they get big enough to hit you back?

Hitting a child is never a solution. It establishes an act which can be perceived as violent or angry (by the child) as something that is acceptable. SETTING AN EXAMPLE OF RESPECT AND LOVE would surely have helped these kids from getting so out of hand in the first place. With little ones PREVENTION is the key. Not beating them after the fact.
