Hampson has a beautiful voice and an excellent technique. My question is if he is a baritone? In my ear he lacks that dark tone that follows with the whole register of a baritone. High tones yes, wonderful. His low tones lack body. The French have a very light baritone called Martin and I think he is one. Melchior began as a baritone and so did a number of others. I hope I am wrong! I will listen to more of his singing.
@Yitzhakhazak Well not all baritones have to sound like Robert Merrill, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Leonard Warren or other Verdi Baritiones to be baritones. For example Fischer-Dieskau sounds even more tenorish than Thomas Hampson but he is a lyric baritone.
You may read an article written by David Jones that he mentioned about distinguishing the baritones with the tenorish sound and the true tenors, I think what he said is right: voiceteacher com slash vocal_fach dot html
